ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme A Grade 3 pupil of Kenridge Primary School was almost kidnapped this past Friday while she was waiting for her mother to fetch her from school. This came amidst several hoax reports on social media of attempted child kidnappings at various schools around the Boland and northern suburbs recently. In one of these hoax reports a Toyota Quantum minibus was reported as suspicious, but turned out to be agents of Ozone Aqua selling their products. But this time, it really happened. According to the principal, Sandy Smith, the child was standing near the Koos Ek- steen hockey field at the stop street on the corner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Rhodes Street at about 13:15. ATTEMPTED KIDNAP: GRADE 3 LEARNER KEEPS HER COOL

Grade 3 pupil of Kenridge Primary

    Schoolwas almost kidnapped this past

Friday while she was waiting for her

mother to fetch her from school.

This came amidst several hoax reports on

social media of attempted child kidnappings

at various schools around the Boland and

northern suburbs recently. In one of these

hoax reports a Toyota Quantum minibus

was reported as suspicious, but turned out

to be agents of Ozone Aqua selling their

    products.

But this time, it really happened.

According to the principal, Sandy Smith,

the child was standing near the Koos Ek-

steen hockey field at the stop street on the

corner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Rhodes

    Street at about 13:15.

    A white kombi-type vehicle with a man

and a woman inside stopped next to the girl

and they told her that her mother had asked

them to fetch her from school.

The girl turned around and ran back into

the school grounds, Smith said. The mother

came to fetch her child and they reported the

incident to the police and the CNi armed re-

sponse, but did not lay a charge.

    Captain Marchell Rhode, media spokes-

person of the Durbanville police, confirmed

the incident was reported to the head of sec-

tor 3 of the Durbanville police. However, he

said that it was reported to the police that

the vehicle in question was a white bakkie.

According to Rhode the sector head said

they have been doing regular patrols at the

    school since the incident.

Weve put out a message to our parents

to collect their children on time after school.

We have also instructed our children towait

for their parents inside the school grounds

and have teachers standing in our car park

at home time to ensure the learners safety,

    said Smith.

CNi armed response is also patrolling the

entrances to the school at both sides when

the school comes out in Tygervalley Road

and Van Riebeeck Road, says Stephen

Swartz, manager of the response unit of CNi

    armed response.

According tohim they are also on the look-

out for suspicious vehicles or people in the

    vicinity of the school.

    Volgens Malcolm Louw, n pensioena-

ris, moet hy nou vir sowat ses weke n

beenstut dra nadat hy sy knie erg beseer

    het.

Hy het op 1 Junie om-

    streeks 16:00 met sy Jack

    Russell-hondjie Spike gaan

stap toe hy in die gat van so-

    wat 700 cm getrap het.

Die gat was in die gras reg

    langs die betonbrug oor die

    Kuilsrivier in Ibisstraat in

    Sonstraal.

Hy het in die pad geval en

sy hond het verdwaas in die

    pad gaan staan.

Ek of my hond kon raak-

    gery gewees het. Gelukkig

het daar n vrou en haar kin-

ders in n silwer Toyoto stil-

gehou en my gehelp. Ek wil

    haar baie daarvoor bedank,

    het hy ges.

    Volgens Louw het sy reg-

    terknie se ligamente van die

val geskeur en moet hy nou

    n beenstut dra.

    Maar wat hom die ergste

grief, is dat hoewel hy dit die-

    selfde dag nog omstreeks

    18:00 by die Stad Kaapstad

    aangemeld het, daar teen

    verlede Vrydagmiddag nog

    net mooi niks daaraan ge-

doen is nie. Niemand het uit-

    gekom om selfs net gevaar-

lint om die gat te span nie, het hy ges.

Dis gevaarlik en iemand anders kan

ook seerkry. Hier is talle bejaardes in ons

    omgewing, veral met die Legato-aftree-

oordwat ookhier gele is, het Louwges.

Volgens hom sal hy eers n ses weke

    LouwhetMaandagaanTygerBurgerbe-

vestig dat die gat toe intussen, vermoede-

    lik verlede Vrydagmiddag laat, toege-

maak is, omdat hy vroeg Saterdagoggend

    Brett Herron, burgemeesterskomitee-

vraag ondersoek gaan instel.

Die gat is verlede Vrydagmiddag her-

indien vir symediese onkostes by die Stad

    se departement van openbare aanspreek-

    likheidseise.

In another real incident twogirls also escaped

kidnapping at the Rusthof Primary School in

    Strand last Wednesday.

    Deputy principal Ikraam Wentzel con-

firmed the ten-year-old Grade 5 girls were ap-

proached by an elderly woman with long

blonde hair, dressed in black, and a man in

a blue bakkie. The woman tried to force the

girls into the bakkie, but they managed to

break free and ran back into the school

    grounds.

This came amidst several alleged false re-

ports of attempts to snatch children or people

taking photographs of children at schools and

    elsewhere.

The rumours of children being targeted at

schools in the northern suburbs as well as in

    Franschhoek, Strand, Somerset West and

Paarl started making the rounds a few

months ago on WhatsApp and Facebook.

A photograph of a Toyota Quantum mini-

bus was distributed on social media as one of

the suspect vehicles of a kidnapping syndi-

    cate.

However, it turned out to be a vehicle be-

    longing toAquaOzone out onbusiness selling

their products from door to door.

    Shadley Abrahams, director of Aqua

Ozone, was quoted on Facebook saying ever

since the picture was shared, his staff have

been harassed by the police and the public.

    Durbanville police warned that people

mustmake sure of their facts before they post

or distribute alerts on social media.

    hoe almal begin gil.

he lack of parking at the Palm Grove

Centre in Durbanville may be relieved

once a proposed parking garage has

    been built.

An application for the approval of the site

development plan for erf 3989 in Main Road

adjacent to erf 4791, on which the Palm

Grove Centre stands has been recom-

mended for approval by subcouncil 7 (Koe-

berg) at its monthly meeting on Monday.

    Gerhard Fourie, chairperson of subcoun-

cil 7 (Koeberg), says by recommending the

    approval the subcouncil acknowledges the

need for additional parking in the city busi-

    ness area.

The double storey parking garage adja-

cent to the Palm Grove Centre building will

provide 53 parking bays tomake up for inad-

equate parking due to a historic shortfall of

23 on-site parking bays with the construc-

tion of this shopping centre on the corner of

    Church Street and Main Road.

According to the report, an undertaking

by the developer was agreed upon by the

    thenDurbanvillemunicipality inNovember

1997 that parking will be provided on the ad-

jacent erf 3989 to serve the Palm Grove Cen-

tre, that any shortfall in parking will be de-

termined and that the developer must pay

compensation for the shortfall in parking.

    However, this parking requirement and

    consequent agreement between the munici-

pality and the developer has never beenmet.

In the report it is stated that after several

meetings between City officials and the de-

veloper to resolve the issue, itwas concluded

that a shortfall of 23 parking bays still ap-

plied and had to be addressed.

The only alternative available was for the

Palm Grove Centre to be demolished and er-

ven 4791 and 3989 to be redeveloped. Accord-

ing to the report the landowner indicated

that this was not a viable option.

The parking garage will have access via

Main Road and Scher Street. It was also pro-

posed that the floor-to-ceiling height of the

ground floor must be generously propor-

tioned and designed to allow for the use of

the structure to adapt to potentially accom-

modate other uses in future, such as retail

    with more parking above.

A pedestrian canopy will also be built on

the servitude road alongside Main Road

from the parking garage to the Palm Grove

    Centre to accommodate shoppers.

    urbanville police have warned resi-

    dents of various crime patterns

from an increase in the theft of mag

wheels to internet fraud and the theft of

    school bags and expensive bicycles.

    Captain Marchell Rhode, media spokes-

person for the Durbanville police, says the

theft of alloy wheels frommotor vehicles is

a huge concern, especially in Sonstraal

    Heights and Sonstraal.

This past weekend several vehicles were

    targeted wheremagwheels with tyres were

stolen from vehicles with a total value of

    R44 000.

Most of these incidents happen during

21:00 and 05:00, according to Rhode.

On Wednesday 1 June two cases were re-

ported where mag wheels to the value of

R14 000 were stolen from motor vehicles.

    Incidents occurred in Mendelsohn

Street and Beethoven Crescent. The com-

munity must secure their vehicles by park-

ing them inside a garage, or safeguard their

    premises by locking their gates.

Vehicles that are parked in the streets

are at high risk, warns Rhode.

    TheDurbanville communitymust also be

aware of fraud on internet sites such as

    Gumtree.

    Houses arebeingadvertisedonGumtree

and victims then pay a deposit into an ac-

count. Afterwards they find out the compa-

ny or sales person does not exist, he says.

There are still cases being reported

where expensive bicycles are being stolen

    out of garages in Durbanville.

He says residents must secure their bicy-

cles by keeping them in a safe place.

Extra measures must be put in place to

    safeguard bicycles, he advised.

    Rhodealsowarnsof several theft cases re-

ported at the Speak Easy restaurant in Dur-

    banville.

Various cases of theft have been report-

ed where valuable items were stolen from

clients visiting the premises. Items such as

cell phones, sunglasses and cameras are be-

ing stolen out of bags, he warned.

People that are visiting the premises get

drunk and negligent, and then their proper-

ty gets stolen or lost, he says.

    Durbanville police are also warning

school children to secure their valuable

items from being stolen when practising

    sports.

Many cases are being reported where

valuable items were stolen out of lockers or

    school bags, he says.

    Elke sent tel dubbeld!

    selfs sente, verduidelik Wilinda Ford,

    streekorganiseerder van die organisasie se

    Wes-Kaapse streek.

    maak.

Volgens Ford is daar n baie groot finansi-

    HelpendeHand intreemet finansile bystand

    uit ons studiefonds, s sy.

In een onlangse geval is n student in haar

finale jaar by haar koshuis uitgesluit toe

vlaag van oranje T-hemde by verskeie klei-

    ner winkelsentrums in Kraaifontein, Brac-

The outing was organised by the Durbanville Rota-

to transport the elderly from around the Cape to the

The show was predictably impressive with big

bands playing selections of tunes in their own style.

This was toppedwith the Delft Feeder Band, he said.

The seniors were treated to a meal and fruit juice

    on their way home.

    ie rugbyklub Durbanville-

Bellville glo dat hy n verant-

    woordelikheid het teenoor die

    gemeenskap in die onmiddelike om-

gewing waar die klub gele is.

    Daarom is die Masibambane-

sportstigting (MSS) in 2002 gestig om

n platform te skep vir sportontwik-

    keling in die noordelike voorstede.

    Volgens Carel Steenkamp, voor-

    sitter van Masibambane, gee die

    stigting individue van verskillende

    kulture en sosio-ekonomiese om-

standighede die kans om saam te

groei en te ontwikkel op die sport-

    veld.

Die afgelope tien jaar het MSS

sport as die middel gebruik vir ont-

    wikkeling in agtergeblewe gemeen-

skappe.

    erskole Fisantekraal, Bloekombos,

    Hector Petersen en Trevor Manuel

    in Durbanville en omgewing.

Die klub se afrigters help om rug-

by by die skole en omliggende klubs

o.21-span. April is in die Springbok-

groep en het Vrydag sy debuut vir

die SA A-span teen die Engelse Sax-

    ons in Bloemfontein gemaak.

    Steenkamp het bygevoeg dat die

stigting oor die volgende 21 maande

    meer geleenthede vir afrigters en

    spelerswil skep. Die stigtingwil kin-

    ders van alle ouderdommedeurmid-

del van rugby van die strate houmet

    hul programme.

verder wil studeer, sit ons koppe by-

mekaar om dit ook n werklikheid te

    maak.OnshetmetDurbell hande ge-

vat, want ons kan hul geriewe daar-

    voor gebruik, s hy.

    Vir leerders in die pre-primre

skole help die stigting die onderwy-

sers om deur raakrugby die sport

aan die kinders bekend te stel. Wan-

by skole soos Stellenberg of Durban-

ville n leerder is, doen hulle self af-

rigting op skool- of klubvlak as n ek-

    stra inkomste.

    lende instansies mekaar tegemoet

    kan kom, s Steenkamp.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Ranting over

    rising rental

    rates

At the start of July my 22-month-old baby

boy will be living in his third home

    poor kid.

It has gotten so bad that his first

coherent sentence might very well be

    Pack it in a box.

Quite astonishingly, I have moved 23

times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I know

what Im talking about when it comes to

    rental prices.

It has also struck me how little home

owners know about the price of renting a

    decent place in Cape Town.

All they are concerned about is wheth-

er they will be paying a little more or a

little less next month due to the interest

    rate.

As rental tenants we face an industry

standard annual price hike of 10%!

Every year we are 10% poorer! Add

half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful of

inflation and you have a baked monstros-

    ity that chips teeth.

    In just seven

    years from now

    one can expect to

    pay double one

    pays now!

    A shoestring

    budget can only be

    cut so much. Soon

    there will be no

    shoestring left!

    Agents and

    owners who rent

    out their properties

    have no problem

    getting tenants

    because of the

    great migration

from the rest of the country to Cape

    Town.

    Someone ought to tell Gautengers

perhaps they are better off in the north.

I compared renting prices from Gaut-

eng and Cape Town this week. I fully

expected to see a similarity in what you

    can get for R10 000 a month.

With that money I can rent a nice

townhouse with an impressive garden in

one of the best security complexes in

Pretoria. In Cape Town I have seen

    smaller townhouses with smaller gardens

in Kraaifontein go for R10 000.

I love Cape Town, but something

drastically needs to happen to curb

renting prices, which are quite obviously

    completely out of control.

The only way to keep head above water

    seems to buy property.

The other day I went into a book store

and saw one in the self-help section about

    empowering a middle income household

to buy a house in South Africa.

I paged through it in disbelief and

returned it to where it belongs the

    fiction section. Rent-a-lot

I wonder if Ilse Haas is not a

bit too harsh in her description

    of the terrible Capetonians

    (Cape Town and its clicky

circles, TB, 8 June). The truth

is that in most cities people

are busy and have their own

circles; it is not just a Cape

    Town thing.

But I wonder how far her

    own ideas actually make it

    worse? There are ways to

    make friends. My daughter and

    family relocated to Australia a

few years ago, landed in a

    small town with no other

    South Africans, and by being

    active and helpful at school,

    joining a local church, inviting

people over for a braai and

    just being friendly and outgo-

    ing, they have more friends

    than they can handle now.

I myself arrived here in the

Cape 23 years ago and had to

    hear from the Pretoria crowd

    how distant the Capetonians

were. Within a few months I

had a few good friends and I

still wait to meet these horri-

    ble Capetonians (they are

there, but they should not be

    your norm).

It takes a bit of effort and

    moving out of ones comfort

zone, but it can be done. Ilse,

you are welcome to phone me

    Its not just a

    Cape Town thing

More often than not when our

    government hospitals appear in

the papers, they take the rap.

This time Im writing to say a

    special thank you to the

    excellent team at the Special

    Care Unit, Obstetric and

    Gynaecology, of Tygerberg

    Hospital.

I am a foreigner who has

lived in and loved Cape Town

for the past five years. Al-

    though living healthily with a

    health complication known as

    sickle cell anemia, I knew

    having children would be no

    mean feat for me.

When I fell pregnant with my

    first daughter in 2013, my

    doctor referred me to the

    Special Care Unit at Tygerberg.

I met Professor Hull and his

team back then and it was a

    wonderful experience being

    managed by them.

Although I was in the hospi-

tal for the most part of the

    Special thanks to

    TygerbergHospital

    Ek was hierdie week verstom

om te sien die areas onder die

    swaaie en klimraam in die

    speelparkie in Vierlanden,

    oorkant Bergsig-kerk, kry n

    sementblad. Dit is juis areas

    waar kinders soms afval.

    n Sagte landingsplek is tog

belangrik. Wat as n kind kop

    eerste op daardie sement

    beland? Die opknap van die

park is n baie positiewe bydrae

    vir Vierlanden en word deur

    ons inwoners waardeer.

    Die speelarea kan gerus nog

uitgebrei word met nog n paar

    speelapparate, soos n groter

    glyplank en rondomtalie.

    Heelwat klagtes in hierdie

    briewekolom en my ondervin-

    ding oor die afgelope klompie

jare noop my om n bydrae te

maak. N my en my gesin se

    verblyf van ongeveer tien jaar

in Durbanville, het ons vir n

tydperk van meer as 15 jaar in

    plattelandse dorpe in die Oos-

en Wes- Kaap gewoon. Vir die

    afgelope twee maande is ons

    terug in Durbanville. Wat n

    verstommende ervaring!

    Die motor glip geruisloos

heen en weer oor die meeste

    van die seepgladde paaie en

strate; hier en daar is n duikie

of n bultjie om jou wakker te

skommel. Jy hoef nie te ruk en

pluk, skommel en skud of heen

en weer slinger soos n besope-

ne om darem net die meeste

slaggate te vermy nie. Ek stap

    verby n gebreekte werkruim-

deksel; n week later op dieself-

de staproete kom ek tot stil-

stand om seker te maak ek

    droom nie. Die deksel is

    vervang en die skade netjies

    herstel. Munisipale spanne is

oral aan die werk om onder

meer nuwe heinings op te rig,

n park te ontwikkel en straat-

    ligte te vervang. My versoek

    aan die munisipaliteit by n

    vorige tuiste om n foutiewe

    straatlig se gloeilamp te ver-

vang, is vir meer as ses maan-

de geweier omdat daar nie geld

Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville is due to be

    resurfaced, andwith the project commenc-

ing next week, motorists should expect

some delays due to the closure of lanes.

The resurfacing, set to cost approximate-

ly R4 million, should be completed by

Tuesday 5 July if all goes as planned.

Roads have a limited lifespan. Given

the huge investment that is required for

    building new infrastructure, we under-

take regular maintenance to prolong the

longevity of the citys road network. As

such, the roadworks along Jip de Jager

Drive involve themaintenance of the exist-

ing road base, resurfacing, and ancillary

works to prevent further deterioration and

potholes, says the Citys Mayco member

    for transport, Brett Herron.

Some lanes in Jip de Jager Drive will be

closed to traffic for the duration of the

roadworks. However, one lane in each di-

rection will remain open at all times.

The closure of the lanes will enable us

to expedite the roadworks so that motor-

ists are inconvenienced for a shorter time.

Even though the progress depends as

much on the weather as on other unfore-

seen circumstances, we are confident that

the works will be completed within three

    weeks, says Herron.

The closure of some of the lanes will af-

fect traffic in both directions along Jip de

Jager Drive and some roads in the area.

I request road users to pleasemake pro-

vision for longer travelling times during

the next three weeks and to be patient.

Once completed, we will all benefit from

the new smoother road surface and im-

    proved driving conditions, says Herron.

Information Centre for more information on 0800

    Die Brackenfell-inwoner speel die rol

    vandiematriargMargueriteKoekemoer in

Daar is

kamp of vakansie gaan hou, uitgebeeld

word met n goeie skep humor.

Haar karakter, wat sy sommer Mamma

Koekemoer noem, deel die skerm met

haar veelsydige man, Johan, gespeel deur

die Afrikaanse sanger Joe F, haar seun Jo-

han jr.vertolk deur TJ Day en haar goth-

Ek is baie kwaai met my man en hou

homgraag op sy tone, s Liz vanMargue-

die tipiese goedjies van tieners. Hoewel

    Mamma Koekemoer is redelik snaaks,

moet! Gewoonlik is televisie-sitcoms so 25

minute lank per episode, maar Die Koeke-

moers is bietjie anders. Die reeks word in

episodes van drie minute elk oor 12 weke

uitgesaai. Liz vertel dat dit met baiemoei-

tewasdat die spanagter die reeks dit regge-

kry het om in net n paar minute te wys

hoe die tipiese kampeerder lyk by n oord

    ding verder moet gebruik.

Toe Joe my kontak om n rol

twee keer gedink nie, want so n uitdaging

    is vir my verskriklik lekker.

Sy

hoop dat Die Koekemoers die begin van

groot dinge vir haar as aktrise gaan wees.

New church going up in Durbanville

Congregants of Urban Edge Church gathered to pray and witness the ground clearing for their

    new church.

    O

ver 400 congregants of Urban Edge

    Church in Schoongezicht in Durban-

ville gathered on an open piece of land

on Pinehurst Drive on Saturday 4 June to

pray and witness the clearing of the land for

    their new church.

Urban Edge Church purchased a 1.2 ha

section of land on Pinehurst Drive in Pine-

hurst next to the Curro Merian Private

School to build a modern, state-of-the-art

    auditorium.

In addition to this, the building will house

a fully equipped childrens and youth centre

    with four smaller auditoriumvenues, excep-

tional parents and toddlers facilities and a

    large coffee shop with lounges.

The Pinehurst campuswill be built in sev-

eral phases over thenext 18months. In antic-

ipation of the completion of the building, the

church has added a fifth service at 16:00 at

    the Durbanville Curro School.

The church expanded over the past 20

years from about 350 members to over 1300

    people attending services today.

This is an exciting season for us, says

    Pastor Sean Phillipps.

God has miraculously blessed us by pro-

viding this land in Pinehurst. When this

church started over 20 years ago with just

12 people in a house, we never imagined that

    wewouldbebuildingan1100 seater auditori-

um at a second campus, Phillipps said.

Urban Edge started in 1987 when a few

    families from Durbanville started commut-

ing to theHarfield RoadAssembly of God ev-

ery week. The need arose to expand and

evening meetings commenced in a rented

hall in Durban Road. This led to the estab-

lishment of the Durbanville Assembly of

God in January 1988. In April that year they

moved to the Durbanville Town Hall.

In 1989 land was purchased and in July

    1994 a 400-seater auditorium was built in

    Eland Street.

The church grew steadily to approximate-

ly 350 people. In 2005 the childrens church

was built, and in 2008 the church was re-

    named the Urban Edge Church.

We invite you to join us on this exciting

journey that not only gives another commu-

nity a great church, but also leaves a legacy

for those following in our footsteps, adds

    Phillipps.

This project is directly aligned with Ur-

ban Edge Churchs vision of connecting peo-

ple to people and people to God. This will en-

able us to cater for the growing number of

people that call Urban Edge home, he says.

All these physical developments are vital

for us to keep reaching people and spiritual-

ly impacting lives, helping people to grow

into whom God has called them to be, he

    says.
