Thecommunity surroundingJSKlopperPri-mary is still in shock after a car crashed intothe school last week.

While two children, a baby girl and a three-year-old boy, were seriously injured and aman died after a car crashed through a fenceat the school in Halt Road, Elsies River onFriday morning at about 10:30, there is stillrelief that the accident happened just beforethe first break.

Residents in the area said that if the acci-dent had happened during break many chil-dren could have been injured because the ar-ea where the car came through was a verypopular part of the playground.

At the time of the incident Capt Pierre Jor-daan, communications officer of Elsies Riverpolice, confirmed that the children were pas-sengers in the vehicle. He said JohnathanEde from Leonsdale lost control of his redHonda Prelude and drove at high speedthrough the back gate of the school. The carcollided into steps next to a classroom.

The driver died at the scene and a passen-ger survived, but two minors were seriouslyinjured, said Jordaan. He added the chil-dren, apparently the children of the de-ceased, were flung out of the vehicle duringthe accident.

Investigations into the cause of the crash,that happened at the back of the school whenthe car was apparently travelling down 30th

Street that leads to the schools playground,have revealed that the driver may have suf-fered an epileptic fit.

One of the children, who is a year old, wasairlifted to Red Cross Childrens Hospital ina critical condition, while a three-year-oldwas taken to hospital by ambulance. The oth-er adult occupant in the car also sustainedserious injuries and was taken to hospital.

The drivers family told reporters at thescene that the driver had a history of epilep-sy and was prone to having fits. They believehe may have blacked out at the time of thecrash.

While the older child has been releasedfrom Tygerberg Hospital the remaining tod-dler is still in a critical condition.

Keeping time in fine traditionGARY VAN DYK

The Royal Crusaders Christmas Band is stillmarching strong after more than 50 years.

On Sunday 29 January they will be march-ing and making their music once again asthey host the first annual Union ChristmasBand competition of the season.

It will be held at the Rosina Paarwater Sta-dium in Bellville South from 10:00, and theywill be competing again six other bands onthe day.

Musical director, Levi Alexander, is call-ing on the community to come and supportthis event because it is also part of their fund-raising taking place for an historical tourthat the band will be undertaking later thisyear.

We all know that this type of band is deep-ly rooted in Cape tradition that comes on formany generations, with our band starting inApril 1959, making it one of the oldest com-munity organisations in Bellville South.

There are currently approximately 30musicians in the band, aged between 13 to 70years playing a variety of wind and percus-sive instruments in a classical military windensemble style.

The full marching band, marching squadand supporters club members are approxi-mately 120 members strong, and through ourhistory the background and occupation ofthe musicians and members of the band var-ies greatly from past Springbok and provin-cial rugby players, police and traffic officers,industrial and construction workers, officeworkers and executives, pensioners to stu-

dents and scholars. In this way it brings thewhole community together.

While the main activity of the band takesplace at this time of the year, they are invitedto perform throughout the year at churches,functions and other community events.

We were afforded the privilege to performat the Artscape Theatre in their Bavariameets Western Cape Expo 2010, and a high-light was when we received Gold in our lastparticipation at the annual South AfricanChristmas Band Board Competition, con-tinued Alexander.

The Band has also made history as the firstChristmas band to perform at a service atThe St Georges Cathedral in Cape Town inDecember, 2010.

We want to show young people how musiccan enhance their lives and the majority ofthe youth musicians come from disadvanta-ges communities.

It is a constant challenge to keep youthmusicians interested and committed to theensemble, but our executive does a sterlingjob.

Young members are kept busy with lear-ning how to play their instrument in indivi-dual weekly lessons, theory classes, mar-ching squad practise, and band rehearsals.

Cllr Beverley Cortje-Alcock, theMEC of Social Development, was themain speaker at this event as 47 cer-tificates were given to ladies whocompleted their courses in Beadingfor Business, Crafts for Business,Level 1 Sewing for Business, Level 2Sewing for Business, and Level 3Sewing for Business.

Project manager Joy Warriespointed out that the Level Three sew-ing course was for ladies who aretaught the skill of making elegantand bridal wear with accessories.

This was a new addition to theclasses of 2011, facilitated by GlynisLambert and there was much excite-ment when the participants mod-elled their handiwork.

The highlight of the evening wasthe bridal gown by Yolanda Nayger,which showed that there are lots ofpeople in our communities with theright creativity to empower them-

selves, she said.Warries pointed out that these eco-

nomic development programmeshavebeen in existence since late 2007with more than 200 ladies having at-tended the classes offered over thelast four years.

Some of the graduates of thecourses now have their own busi-nesses and some stayed on in the pro-grammes as facilitators.

There are many testimonies ofthe value that the courses have add-ed to the womens lives, in instanceswhere they were abused it showedthem that there are people who willhelp them equip them to be inde-pendent.

Where there was alcohol anddrug abuse it gave many of them away out of those addictions toachieve a positive potential in theirlives, she said.

While registration for courses hasalready started for this year, War-ries is also very excited about a newcourse, Mosaic for Business, that isstarting this year.

The centre also offers advice andassistance to residents who need ad-vice regarding starting an organisa-tion, NPO registration, organisationdevelopment, stakeholder develop-ment, and proposal writing.

Fresh talent at carnivalGARY VAN DYK

It is time to let your talent shine whenRavensmead High hosts their annual car-nival in February.

There will be more than just fun at the fairat this event because Crazyworld Produc-tions will be providing local singers withwhat could be a stepping stone to fame in theentertainment world.

Started last year, the Cape Town basedrecord label and recording studio wanted topromote and develop local talent in the en-tertainment industry.

Over the past year they facilitated openmic nights at various clubs to identify andassist up and coming talent, and already putout their first showcase CD of these talents.

Now theyre offering five more artists thechance to fame at the school carnival on Fri-day 3 February.

Headline artist for the label, Brilynn, whois also a managing member of the company,felt that there was still a lot more young tal-ent to be discovered in the community andthis was their way of starting that process.

This will be part of the schools talentshow at the carnival and we want these fivewinners to be part of our next showcase com-pilation, he said.

The carnival will be running from 2 Feb-ruary until 4 February, and we will also beproviding some top class entertainmentthroughout the carnival.

We will also be at the school on the morn-ing of Friday 27 January in order to assistin collecting entry forms and to answer anyquestions learners may have. If any talentsin the community are interested in entering,they are also welcome to come and see usthere and if we have space available we willassist them.

Brilynn, who has just released his secondalbum, Touch, will also be in action and hisalbums will be on sale at the event.

He added that this year the company willnot be doing open mic nights at clubs butwanted to concentrate on the talents atschools.

We want to help the schools in our areaswith fundraising as well, he said.

While theseyoung talentsmust bydiscov-ered and given the opportunity to shine wealways stress the importance of their educa-tion.

Amusical educationproject inBelharis tuning into maths and science thisyear.

Musiceducare, a project run by Wil-lie Molife, is changing this year to in-clude some non-musical educationalfacilities as it becomes MCSM (Music,Computers, Science and Maths) trai-ning.

Molife said existing learners in themusic programme have progressedvery well with parents very happywith the progress that they were ma-king in the development of their mu-sical abilities but it was time that theybroadened their projects.

We are still having more learnersenroling for our musical educationbut we feel that we can do more forour children who need help in otheraspects of learning, he said.

This year we will be able to offertuition in mathematics, physical sci-ence and life science from Grade 10 to12, as well as special computer trai-ning projects that will be free for alllearners in our projects.

These fun and exciting computercourses will be done in school holi-days for learners who meet certaincriteria in other studies. These inclu-de that they register on time and com-mit themselves to their studies, hesaid.

Cool jazz at Belvue Primary SchoolGARY VAN DYK

Belvue Primary School in Belhar bringssome cool jazzy sounds to the communityon Friday 3 February.

From 19:00 till late the school will be hostingtheir annual Open-Air Music Festival on thegrounds of the school that will be featuringbands like The Rockets, N2, the Belhar MusicCollective and many more local talents.

Principal Andy Josephus, said that thisevent had been growing in the communityover the years and was a great way to bring

music to the people.Many of the parents at our school do not

have the means to get out into the city and oth-er areas where the music is happening so theyhave a great time when we present thesegroups to them right here in the community,he said.

Another good thing about this event is thatit gives former learners and teachers at theschool the chance to get together and have abit of a reunion.

In this respect we are also appealing tomore ex-learners and staff to support us be-cause we want to get them all together to help

us with future projects at the school.There are many ways that they can help

with projects here at the school, and this yearwe are seriously looking at getting our schoolhall built, so we need all the assistance fromthem to give something back to the school.

Tickets for the event are R60 and secureparking is available.

While light meals will be on sale music lov-ers can bring along their own refreshmentsas well, along with their camping chairs to en-joy the festival.

Since his success in the Idolscompetition, local idol MarkHaze has been very busy.

He will be performing with theother Top 3 Idols, Dave van Vuurenand Crushanda Forbes, at Rhebok-skloof Wine Estate in Paarl on Fri-day.

Mark, who is originally fromBellville, came second in the Idols7 competition last year.

Since then, he says he has beendoing lots and lots of shows.

Mark has also been signed withUniversal Music and has startedworking on his album.

He and his band, formally knownas 12th Avenue, have been writingnew material and rehearsing.

Mark explains that his contractwith Universal Music is for a three-album deal, with the option to ex-tend depending on his success.

They assist in providing the stu-dio and producers, Mark says, add-ing: The album will be recorded atBellville Studios, and will be co-pro-duced by both Theo Crous and Bri-an OShea. We are all very excitedto be working together and will be

making sure a real kick-ass albumcomes to the fore.

Mark says they are looking to re-lease the album in early March.

to hear that the band still play a lotof their old material.

The previous albums have beenselling quite well since my appear-ance on Idols last year, Mark says.

Bringing wrestling to the burbsSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Xtreme Wrestling Entertain-ment which opened its doors oneyear ago, is growing fromstrength to strength and if thefirst year is anything to go by,the future is going to be a crack-er.

Brackenfell is the headquartersof the XWE, an area which was pre-viously not exposed to professionalwrestling.

It was a strategic decision tobase ourselves in the northern sub-

urbs. The people want to see properprofessional wrestlers performingon their doorstep.

With the XWE opening its doorstwice a week, together with month-lySaturdaymorningwrestling clin-ics, we aim to craft men of all ages,sizes, backgrounds and cultures in-to future South African wrestlingsuperstars.

Although our initial objective isto seek talent and expose wrestlingto the northern suburbs, the mid-term goal is to host a minimum ofthree monthly shows all over theWestern Cape and eventually

spreading to the entire country,touring on a regular basis.

The XWE aims to teach not onlythe art of professional wrestling butalso to school all trainees on the ac-tual psychology which goes alongwith professional wrestling.

One of our major aims is also totake anyone over the age of 16 andcraft them into dedicated athletesand entertainers, said the ownerJohan Lamprecht.

Several top wrestlers have joinedthe XWE including Blacksmith(Trevor van der Westhuizen), JasonSteele, the Saint (Pastor Gustav Le

Roux), Warlock, Alcatraz, Schoolboy, Hybrid and El Matador toname a few.

The XWE not only works closelywith the community by welcomingthem to join as wrestlers, but alsooccasionally does shows for Kraai-fontein (Christfontein) church.

I feel we have come a long wayin our first year. We ensure allwrestlers will be trained to interna-tional standards and will portray avariety of stylesincluding our ownway, the XWE way.

Chippa United are not sitting back to admiretheir first round success in the NationalFirst Division.

The Cape side are looking to bolster theirteam for the business end of the season.

Playing for the first time in the NFD, Chip-pa United got off to a slow start with two defe-ats in their opening couple of matches,which resulted in seasoned coach ProfessorNgubane being roped in to steady the ship.

From that point onwards the club has notlooked back as they steadily climbed up thestandings to end round one in a commenda-ble fifth position on the log.

Ngubane has credited the turnaround tothe positive response he received from theplayers.

What we have achieved is down to hardwork and discipline, and the belief the play-ers adopted in themselves when I took over.

They knew where I came from, they knew

what I had achieved in taking teams like Na-thi Lions and Thanda Royals to the play-offs.

Its also been a help to have enjoyed suchgood support at home, our fans have beenbrilliant, the players want to perform infront of them and we have not lost at homesince I took over, he said.

Ngubane is however aware that there is notime to rest on their laurels; round two of theleague campaign is when the pressure reallysets in and teams are tested to the fullest.

Sunningdale City FC heading for the topSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

The Sunningdale City Football Club hasgrown in leaps and bounds since it wasformed back in 2007, winning the prestigiousaward as the Best Junior Club in the CapeTown Tygerberg Football Association (CTT-FA) last season.

And this forthcoming season, the club isgeared to repeat this feat.

The club currently consists of four seniormens teams, a womens team, six u-7 and u-9teams, three u-11 and u-13 teams and two u-15and u-17 teams.

We are very excited about the future ofthe club, and extremely proud of the acco-lade our juniors received.

Our u-11A side have been promoted to theSuper League for the coming season, start-ing in April.

Most of the boys in this age group startedtheir soccer at u-7s or u-9s level and it is testi-mony to the clubs dedication and the com-mitment of their previous coaches.

The u-13s narrowly missed out on promo-tion to the next league, while the u-17B sidedid win promotion and the u-15Bs narrowlylost in the final of the knock-out competition.

One of the reasons for our success is thatat the younger age groups from u-7 to u-11and u-13 to a lesser extent, the coaches arecompelled to rotate the players through dif-ferent playing positions on the field.

We believe that this is the best way to ful-ly develop the youngsters and allow them todecide in future which is the best positionon the field for their particular talents, saidShaun Johannsen, head of juniors at theclub.

The club is also proud of its strong affilia-tions with Cape Towns two PSL clubs, AjaxCape Town and Santos FC. Derby days werehosted between these clubs last year.

But it is off the field relationships that theclub benefits from most. The club also at-tracts players from Du Noon and surround-ing areas. Where these players are not ableto meet the financial needs by paying theirannual fees, they are sponsored by the clubor its members.

The club also boasts some of the best flood-lights in the Western Cape, allowing forgreat night games.

This year, the club wants to improve evenmore on their recent success with moreteams being promoted to higher leagues.

Applications for membership for the 2012season are now open and as the club is con-strained by the Sunningdale Sports Complexto the number of teams and players they canaccommodate, trials will be hosted for newand existing members early February.
