Circumstances around the death of Mal-colm Brown from Brooklyn are vague.All that is known at themoment is that

his mangled body was found in Brooklyn onSaturdaymorning and that he will be sorelymissed by African Tails, his friends and hisfamily.Says Maitland police spokesperson, W/OSiyabulela Vukubi: “We have opened an in-quest into the victim’s death. We respondedto news that a middle-aged man was foundseriously injured in Brooklyn early on Sat-urday morning. He was taken to hospital,but he succumbed to his injuries.”Vukubi says that the cause of death muststill be determined, and only after the medi-cal report will they consider the possibilitythat he was murdered.

Vukubi could not confirm ordeny any of the rumours cur-rently doing the rounds.One of Brown’s good ac-quaintances, Linda Reeves,first contacted TygerBurgerand said: “Hewas found nakedwith only his shoes on. He hadpanga wounds to his body.”

Firemen responded to aKombi that caught fire onthe N7 Bosmansdamturnoff last Friday.According to Fire andRescue Services spokes­person, Theo Layne, thefire was caused by aleaking petrol pipe. “Ittook Milnerton firemenabout six minutes toextinguish the fire,” heelaborates. Die noodkreet van ’n boemelaar en sy gelief-de hond het ’n barmhartige vrou se ore be-reik. Nou sorg sy darem dat dié twee somsiets te ete kry en het sy selfs al gereël datdie hond gesteriliseer word.

Warm komberse en hondepille is van dieander voordele wat dié twee nou kry nadat’n diere-organisasie ook ingegryp het.

Ellen Husselmann werk in ’n kompleksoorkant die veld waar Hilton Abrahams ensy hond, Lady, soms skuiling teen die win-terkoue vind.

“Ek het een oggend opgelet dat die tweehier oorkant die veld sit. Ek het hulle innigjammer gekry,” sê Husselmann.

Sy het dadelik op hul noodkreet reageeren kos vir Abrahams en Lady gegee. “Ek hetvir hom koffie gebring en vir hulle ’n paareetgoedjies gevat. Ek het later ook met ’n die-re-organisasie gereël dat Lady reggemaakmoet word.”

Inspekteur Frazer Grieve is deel van dieanonieme organisasie wat Lady help. Hybring af en toe hondepille en ’n nuwe lyfbandvir Lady. ’n Paar warm komberse is ook deurdie organisasie aan Abrahams geskenk.

“Ek het vir die eienaar gevra of ek Ladymag kry. En vandaar is sy saam met my

Kaapstad toe.” Abrahams het letterlik opge-saal en met ’n perd die “son ingery” totdathy in Kaapstad beland het.

Abrahams sê dat hy liewer is vir Lady aswat hy ooit vir enige mens sal wees.

“Sy is ’n goeie waghond, maar sy is ookmy beste vriend en my kameraad,” sê diespraaksame Abrahams. Die twee van hullesit in die veld en geniet die warm son teen’n vuil muur in Vasco-boulevard in Good-wood. “Sy is my familie hier. Ek en Ladyloop Kaapstad se strate plat en soek skuilingvir die winter,” sê Abrahams. Hy sê die kouewinterweer is nie goed vir Lady se gesond-heid nie omdat sy onlangs ’n operasie moesondergaan. “Dit maak my hart seer as eksien sy kry koud of is honger. Ek stres oorwaar kos vandaan gaan kom,” sê Abrahams.

Emotions flow for loved doctorTAMSYN COERECIUS

The halls at Kalkfontein Primary Schoolwhere Dr Louis Heyns treated patientsevery month was suddenly silent and filledwith saddened faces full of tears.

On Monday 3 June the Kalkfontein com-munity and students from the University ofStellenbosch gathered to say a final goodbyeto a professor and doctor they truly admired.

Louis Heyns, a paediatric specialist andlecturer was found dead on 30 May in Strandbeachfront, an area dubbed “lovers’ lane”,after having been missing for a week.

Upon hearing the news after a week-longwait, one of his students Raafiq Ely said:“The news was just heartbreaking to us all”.

Most of the students from StellenboschUniversity were part of his initiative, “Mat-ie gemeenskapsdiens”.

This initiative which takes the form ofclinics has been running for many years andallows medical students to do diagnoses onpatients and in return helps underprivi-leged communities.

One of his previous students, MawaddaCassiem-Majal says that the clinic was start-ed in Kalkfontein due to the community hav-ing to walk very far to reach the nearest med-ical care.

“I’ve been working at these clinics withhim since 2006 and all he did was to help thiscommunity,” she says.

The memorial benefit in honour of Heynswas an emotional one as students sang “Healthe World” and lit candles in honour of him.

Dawn Roode, a community leader who hadknown Heyns for many years says that hisgreatest attribute was his humility.

“He was so humble and was of such a bene-

fit to the Kalkfontein community,” she says.Dr Ethelwynn Stellenberg, who had

worked with him for many years reminiscesand says: “He meant so much to the commu-nity and never counted the hours. This is atremendous loss.”

Dr Heyns went missing on 22 May aftervisiting his brother in Somerset West.

As the police tried to retrace the final mo-ments of the slain Maties lecturer his carwas picked up on the N2 and then again inHelderview. His body was then found in ashallow grave on the Strand beachfront.

Dawn, who often hands over soup at the

clinic said that Heyns was a true fan of herinfamous soup dishes.

V The two brothers accused of Heyns’ mur-der, Marthinus van der Walt (33) and Sarel(42) abandoned their bail application in theSomerset West Magistrate’s Court on Mon-day. The third suspect in the murder case,Juan Liedeman (37), applied for bail statingthe Van der Walt brothers had been threat-ening him in jail. Parts of Heyns’ car werefound on the premises of Liedeman’s scrapy-ard in Malmesbury, implicating him in themurder.

He was granted R20 000 bail on Tuesday.

Emails have been doing the rounds to indi-cate that Cape Town is on the verge of load-shedding to save electricity.

The loadshedding schedule, which isavailable on the City of Cape Town’s web-site, will however only be activated if Es-kom decides to implement loadshedding.TygerBurger posed a few questions to the

energy provider, and at the time of going topress, spokesperson Goitsemang Nkomosaid: “Eskom does not currently have plansto loadshed and has not issued a loadshed-ding schedule.”

This news in itself baffled spokespersonsat the City of Cape Town, since they wereunder the impression that loadshedding isimminent.

National spokesperson for Eskom, HilaryJoffee clarified the matter: “Look, we do nothave anything planned now. We work fromhour to hour, not day to day. Of course wehave a plan, but it depends when you ask.Right now (Monday late afternoon), the de-mand is very high again, so we urge the con-sumer to be considerate.

“We have deals with big energy users, butit is residential customers who must helpus avoid loadshedding by conserving ener-gy in the evening in winter. It is a challengefor us to keep the lights on, but people canrest assured that we are doing everythingwe can to avoid loadshedding.”

Peak demand this winter is forecast at36.8 GW, slightly lower than in 2012, but thisis the average for an hour – the “peak withinthe peak” can go as high as 37 GW – 38 GW.

One of the City’s spokespersons, Hayleyvan der Woude, explains that they have re-leased times when certain areas may be af-fected, so that when Eskom gives the goahead to loadshed then there will not be“complete chaos”.

Despite the peak demand being forecast-ed to be lower than last year, the odds ofloadshedding are increased when one con-siders that Eskom will apparently have toperform long-duration planned mainte-nance during the coldest months.

There are four steps the consumer can doto ease the load during peak (17:00 to 21:00).

These are to switch off all geysers andpool pumps, switch off all non-essentiallighting, find alternatives to electrical heat-ers and respond to the Power Alert messag-es by switching off appliances not in use.

Eskom loadshed yes, no ... maybe

ATable View resident was stripped ofmany of his possessions, apparently“because he has a big heart”.

Two destitute women, Vicky Motley andCathy Lloyd, were arrested by the local po-lice for theft after the suspicion arose thatthey might have stolen many items out ofCraig Nel’s house.

The police are investigating the possibili-ty that the suspects stole these items whilethey were looking after Nel’s house.

He was out of the country for about twoweeks and apparently thought he was doingthe suspects a tremendous favour to givethem a roof over their head.

He returned to an “empty house” lastweek Tuesday.

Motley and Lloyd have appeared in courtand are denying the charges.

This is not the first time that Motley andLloyd have been in the news.

HelpedTygerBurger appealed to the public for

help in 2011 for the two living in a field adja-cent to Eagles Crest in Sunridge for almosttwo weeks. The response was significantand they were helped with money and othergoods.

One of Nel’s friends, who wishes to re-main anonymous out of fear that she mightbe “targeted” by the suspects, elaborates:“Nel knows the suspects well. They haveworked at his property before.”

“When he went to Congo, he asked themto look after his house, and he thought hewas doing them a huge favour.”

“Nel’s friend phoned on the Sunday andafter informing the suspects of Nel’s returnand that she would be coming past thehouse the next day, she heard one of the twosaying: ‘Oh s**t, she is coming tomorrow’!”

EvidenceThe anonymous informant reckons this

is as much evidence as the courts need to

convict the suspects.“Why would they have said that? The

friend went to the house the next day, andthe two were not there. One of the doors wasopen and items like the furniture, the fridgeand the flat screen TV were gone. Neitherof the two suspects could be reached ontheir cellphones,” she continues.

Another anonymous resident who sayshe knows them well from his pub crawlingdays, contacted TygerBurger to elaborateon their characters.

He alleges they are involved in drugs andgambling and even claims he was connedby them in the past. “They prey on people’sgoodwill,” he says.

Spokesperson for Table View police, LtElizabeth Munro, confirmed that the sus-pects appeared in Cape Town Magistrate’sCourt and pleaded not guilty.“We have statements from neighbours whosay they saw the accused load goods ontoa bakkie. The accused said this was theirown stuff.”

Despite another increase in MyCiTi busfares, the City of Cape Town maintainsthat this mode of transport is “compara-ble, if not more affordable” than any oth-er public transport in the area.News that the fares were increased at

the endofMaywasprobablymetwithdis-mayby commuters. Thehike is, however,not solely related to the fuel price or therecent strike, but rather normal annualservice tariff increases.Says the city’s mayoral committee

member: transport for Cape Town, Coun-cillor Brett Herron: “It falls in line withthe annual service tariff increases leviedby the city at the start of each newmunic-ipal financial year. Included in fare pric-ing pressures are fuel price increases andinflation. The city has previously taken

decisions not to increase fares despite fu-el costs rising substantially over the lastyear. For example, at the beginning of Ju-ly 2012 there was a similar annual in-crease, where for example the price of atrip on the main route between TableView and the Civic Centre increasedfrom R10 to R10,60.”WhenHerron responded toTygerBurg-

er’s queries he added that costs are stillvery low for travel with MyCiTi.“When one compares the cost of using

a private car, including the petrol, themaintenance of the car, aswell as the costof parking, particularly on the longertrips, for example the Table View routeand the airport, the cost of public trans-port is much cheaper. In comparisonwith other public transport, for exampletrains, minibus taxis or other bus fares,MyCiTi is also more economical, al-though this is not as easy to compare asnot all public transport (for example rail)travels the same routes as the MyCiTibuses do at the moment,” he continued.MyCiTi fare trip statistics and inde-

pendent market research both indicatethat it has become the transport mode ofchoice and themajority of passengers areregular commuters.MyCiTi makes on average between

10 000 and 13 000 passenger trips perweekday.It has, since it launched, made over 6,3

million passenger trips.Herron concluded: “The city is work-

ing hard to launch a distance-based faresystem, making it more economical forpassengers, as they will only pay for thedistances they have travelled. There willalso be a range of what are called ‘travelpackages’.”

MyCiTi still cheap‘in comparison’

MyCiTi bus fares increased between 30cents and R5 for the longer routes at theend of May.

During last month’s Mother’s Day weekend,Canal Walk Shopping Centre was buzzingwithmore than 600moms, 1 000 children andmany supportive dads and grandparentswho came for the Heart 104.9FM Mommyand Me Walk.Moms and their little ones participated in

a relaxed 1,6 km walk on the Saturday withon-air personality, Saskia Falken, leadingthe pack with her toddler Ella St Claire.Already in its fifth year, the Mommy and

Me Walk last year raised more than R25 000for underprivileged children via the CanalWalk Foundation.“It was great to be part of another success-

ful Mommy and Me Walk and every year itamazes me how this initiative continues togrow not only in numbers but also in sup-port from the community and sponsors. Itwas also great how the support from dadsand grandparents have grown,” saysmanag-ing director, Gary Petersen.

The Rietvlei water area in the City of CapeTown’s Table Bay Nature Reserve not onlyoffers visitors the chance to go fishing, sail-ing or power boating, but will now also al-low canoeing and stand-up paddling on atrial basis from 1 July.During the trial period, paddling will on-

ly be allowed in Rietvlei’s outer circuit be-tween 07:30 and 10:00 on weekdays. Limitsmay be placed on the number of paddlerson thewater and entrancewould be allowedon a first-come-first-served basis.This change is part of the city’s plan to

promote safe, affordable and equitable ac-cess to a wide range of recreational oppor-tunities in Cape Town’s nature reserves.Paddling is an environmentally friendly,

low impact, and non-motorised form of re-creation. It does not disturb birds, nor doesit produce the types of contaminants andnoise associated with power boats, makingit very suitable for this nature reserve.The tariffs charged for paddling will be

the same as those charged for non-motor-isedwater-based recreation (including sail-ingandwindsurfing).AdultswouldpayR20per day and children below 18 years of agewould pay R11,50. Regular sailors and pad-dlers have the option of paying an annual

fee of R90 which is valid for 365 days fromthe date of purchase. These tariffs are in ad-dition to the regular entry fees per adult(R13) or child/student/senior (R6,50) andper vehicle (R18) entering the reserve.Other tariffs will also be adjusted on 1 Ju-

ly.Annual entrance permits for regular vis-itors are valid for 365 days from the date ofpurchase for seniors (R62), adults (R120),and families (R185). Powerboats can launchinto the water at R50 per day or R410 withan annual permit. Limited fishing sites areavailable on a first-come-first-served basisfor adults (R40) as well as children and sen-iors (R14). Environmental education pro-grammes can be pre-booked, and rangefrom R3,50 to R5,50 per learner.Paddlersmayuse thenature reserve’s ab-

lution facilities and cold water showers.Those who prefer warm showers may con-sider joining the Milnerton Aquatic Club,which is based at the northern shore of theRietvlei water area. use of the MyCiTi ‘free ride day’.The ‘free ride day’ was held tomark the second anniversary ofthe launch of the MyCiTi servicebetween Civic Centre and TableView stations.“It is very encouraging to note

that a total of 13 708 passengertrips were made on the day,” saidCouncillor Brett Herron, MayoralCommittee Member: Transport

for Cape Town.“The intention is to offer as

many Capetonians as possiblea chance to experience the highlevels of comfort and serviceon the MyCiTi system. As moreroutes roll out across the city, thisannual event promises to becomea real highlight for MyCiTi.”The most popular trips were the

main route between Civic Centreand Table View, followed by theAirport route, which includes thetrip to the V&AWaterfront.

MyCiTimascotMarvin was on hand towelcome passengers to the Civic Centre station to enjoy a free ride on the bus.

Among those enjoying a free ridewere students Simthumile Vharevaitga andMudayHumbulani from theCapePeninsulaUniversity of Technology,who

live inObservatory. “I use this high quality service each day,” said Simthumile.MudaywishedMyCiTi a happy birthday. “MyCiTi is an excellent service,” he said.

MyCiTi’s annual fare increasecomes into effect from 1 July

2013, in line with the City of CapeTown’s budget. Please ensure thatyou have enough money on yourcard to cover the new fares andavoid incurring penalties.“The City has sought to keep

the fare increases as low aspossible and we are confidentthat the increases are reasonable.The MyCiTi service remains aneconomical way to commute,” saidCouncillor Brett Herron.The fare for a trip on an area

servicewill rise fromR5.30 toR5.80,and still includes free transfers toother area routes at Civic Centre andTable View stations. BetweenCivicCentre and Table View stations, the

farewill increase fromR10.60 toR11.50, but still includes a free tripon an area route at either or bothends of the journey.The service from theAirport to

Civic Centrewill go up fromR57toR62 for adults, and fromR28.10toR30.30 for children aged four toeleven years old. Amonthly ticketfor the airport servicewill rise fromR449.50 toR484.60.The cost of amyconnect cardwill

increase fromR23 toR25.As before, children under the age

of four, and less than onemetre inheight, travel free onMyCiTi.Penalty fares have also increased

fromR16 toR24on all routes, exceptalong theCivic Centre –Airport routewhere the penaltywill nowbeR76.
