The Brooklyn resident who livesin Fenwick Street has hadenoughafterhewasyetagain thevictim of a house break-in lastweek Thursday. This time 12thoroughbred racing pigeonswere stolen from his yard by“hooligans”.

to remain anonymous that particu-lar area in Brooklyn has been tar-geted over the years.He says it is now so bad that peo-
ple don’t even report crimes anymore.Maitland police spokesperson,
W/O Siyabulela Vukubi, says thathouse break-ins aren’t on the rise intheir precinct, but he cannot under-stand why people would fail to re-port a case.“If people don’t report incidents
then we won’t know where theproblem areas are. Getting the pub-lic to report crimes is one of ourmain priorities,” he insists.Milnerton police spokesperson,

“Twelve expensive racing pigeons werestolen, a slab was removed from my wall andthey even stole my braai-top!”
Just a few weeks ago a nurse checked upon him and after just half-an-hour her car ra-
dio was stolen.He also claims that uninsured tools to the
value of R300 000 were stolen from his homea few months ago.
“Here it is worse than Khayelitsha! It’s asad business ... I’m very annoyed.”
Vukubi says the priority crimes in theMaitland precinct are theft out of motor ve-hicles and robberies. In most of these cases,the complainant is partly to blame due tonegligence.
One part of Brooklyn falls under the juris-diction of Maitland and the other Milnertonpolice.
Milnerton’s Dell reveals that house break-ins have increased in the Royal Ascott andMilnertonCentral areas.Once again, the vic-tims of these crimes often play a part by notbeing more vigilant, closing all the doors andgates and activating the alarm.
Both Vukubi and Dell once again urge thecommunity to be observant and careful.

The father of a Table View teenager isurging all parents to ensure that theirchildren have the necessary safety gearafter his son suffered a heavy fall off hisskateboard last week.
An exhilarating downhill trip on his long-board skateboard nearly ended in tragedyfor Wesley Mc Lean (15) after he fell and col-lided head-first into a wall on Thursday.
The fall caused Wesley to black out mo-mentarily.
After he came round he was so overcome
with dizziness that a friend had to ask hisparents to come pick him up.
They then phoned Wesley’s father John.“I feel like such an idiot. You see the long-
boards, they are longer, faster and meaner.Just three pushes and you can travel a blockand you think that is nice. But then the kidsstart doing these slides, and skids and goingdownhill on them,” John said.
“Wesley was probably doing about 60 kphwhen he hit a bump and came off his board.
“We took him to hospital and that cost usabout R5 000. He is at home now but thismorning he was still vomiting. He has a bighole in his leg and his one arm he can just
about move, he says is feels like it’s dislocat-ed,” he said on Friday morning.
He added that they were still not aware ofthe full extent of his son’s injuries.
“It’s like any whiplash injury, you only be-come aware of what’s wrong a couple of daysafterwards.”
The worried father said that, had he real-ised the dangers involved in the sport hewould have either ensured his son wear thenecessary protective gear or not let him geton the board to start with.
“You don’t sit and weigh up the negatives,what the worst case scenario could be. Youjust want your kids to have fun.”

The Purple Hat Foundation, an organisationdedicated to finding solutions for the elderlywho struggle to make ends meet has set upan office at 48 York Close, Parklands. Thefoundation has recently moved here fromDurbanville.

dren are concerned about their older rela-tives and would like to participate in findingsolutions so that these relatives do not be-come a burden to them in later life,” explainsLetty Fox, founding member of the founda-

A cast of an archaeological treasure isthe latest addition to the collection of at-tractions at the Table Bay Nature Re-serve situated at Rietvlei.
The cast was made of an inscribed stonefound on the premises of the MilnertonAquatics Club 22 years ago.
“I was secretary of the club at the time. Apole for a sign had to be planted at the gateleading into the club grounds. I asked Rich-ard, who was the groundsman at the time,to dig the hole on 4 January 1990,” recalls PatDowning a well-known member of the club.
Whilst digging, Pat heard shrieks from thegardener and then sawhimrunning towardsher with great excitement.
The stone with writing on it that heshowed her was clearly very old and Down-ing phoned the South African Cultural His-tory Museum in Cape Town and told themabout the find. A representative was sent tocollect the stone.
“The ground on which the clubhouse isbuilt, was used as a dumping ground for allthe rubble that was removed from the exca-vation of the building of the Golden AcreCentre. Therefore it was presumed that thestone had been brought in with the rubble.Nevertheless it was an historic find and Ri-chard was excited and proud about the factthat he had found it,” Pat says.
According to the South African Archaeo-logical Society (SAAS) it is likely that the
stone was originally placed on the shore ofTableBay inwhat is nowcentral CapeTown.
A translation of the inscription reads:“The (ship) Vitoria, captain Cristavao deMendonca, came here on the 25th of May1524. A coin was placed (underneath). Allwell. God be praised.”
TheSAASdates this stone as the oldest rel-ic in South Africa of the early Portuguesenavigators, after the fragments of thepadrao
(memorial cross) left by Bartolomeu Dias atKwaaihoek east of Port Elizabeth in 1488,and another inscribed stone from MosselBay believed to date back to 1500.
A grateful Koos Retief, manager of the re-serve, thanked the club for the donation andconfirmed that the artifactwill be awelcomeaddition to the centre.
The original stone is on display in theIziko Museum.

Spring brings new life and hope and the In-ternational Hotel School (IHS) will be hol-ding a Spring Charity Fair at Sable Squareon 1 September.The fair is in aid of I Am Special Minis-

Spring into action for fair
If ever proof were needed that Eskom haslost the plot, it came when their CEO Bri-an Dames recently called on business fora radical reorganisation of workinghours to deal with the problem of the eve-ning peak hour.
This is the time when the orange or redappeals appear on TV screens asking peopleto switch off geysers, pool pumps and lightsbecause the Eskom grid is in trouble.The surge in demand for electricity is cau-
sed by people coming home from work andswitching on electric stoves, kettles and hea-ters.In a nutshell, domestic consumers are
using too much electricity so Eskom wantsto clobber business. How’s that for logic?A drastic reorganisation ofworking hours
would hurt business and have far-reachingeffects on public transport and family lifeand it wouldn’t solve the problem either.Does Eskom really think families will de-
lay their evening meal to 21:00 when Daddycomes home from his flexi-time job? Whatwill happen is that the stove will have to goon again and there will be two meal times– one for the kids and one for the parents.Thepeakdemandperiod from17:00 to 21:00
is the big problem area. That’s when the bigpower stations can’t produce enough electri-city to meet the demand so they use gas tur-
bines, which use vast amounts of importeddiesel. The electricity they produce is at le-ast seven times as expensive as that produ-ced by the big power stations.The secondproblem is thatmost of the free
electricity for consumers is used for cookingand lighting during the evening peak. Andthen there is stolen electricity which is alsoused mainly at this time.So it is pretty obvious that the best way
to tackle the evening peak is to persuade peo-ple to use gas for cooking and heating. Freeenergy for the poor should be provided in theform of gas which is also cleaner and a darnside safer than the exploding paraffin stovesthat cause the shack fires. Transporting andselling gas will also create jobs.There may be questions about the supply
of LPG but it is a lot easier and quicker toimport LPG than to build power stations.So it’s a “no brainer” except to the confu-
sed people of Eskom. They want to solvewhat is essentially a domestic crisis by clob-bering business and disorganising our lives!As the Chamber of Commerce said recently,Eskom seems intent on solving the wrongproblem.What we need is a campaign to promote
gas for cooking and heating. We need whist-ling kettles for our gas stoves. Instead ofwas-ting money on silly advertisements aboutnot filling the kettle.

Being the only local primary school to po-sitively respond to offers of assistancefrom Merriman Lions Club, De Vrije ZeePrimary and the club have both greatlybenefited and contributed to the partner-ship.

plied large quantities of fruit andvegetables, nutritious food packsfor learners during school holidays,stationery, hot meals, a schoolaward for arts and culture and theschool’s first vertical roller banner.The banner sponsored by Lions
colourfully displays the school’sculture and links it to the Lions phi-losophy.Merriman Lions and Tygerberg
Hills Lions Clubs teamed up to givethe school a new double oven andhotplate for the kitchen. In associa-tion with CTM Milnerton the floorhas also been retiled.
Just prior to the last school holidays DeVrije Zee held a “Red Nose Day” and thefood donated by learners was given to Mer-riman Lions for their “We Care FeedingProject” in Bonteheuwel which feeds 2 000people a week.Recently inducted as president for the Li-

I have recently become a cyclist again af-ter many years out of the saddle.Having been a cyclist in my younger
days I have always beenverymuchawareof the cyclists on the road and over theyears realised that some of them are toblame for motorists driving aggressivelytowards them.They often ride side by side very arro-
gantly expecting motorists to be the leastand yield the right of way.On Thursday 9 August at approximate-
ly 09:00 the motorist who nearly knockedme over at the intersection of BolandWayand Wellington Road was very much inthe wrong.I was proceeding along Wellington
Road in the direction of Fisantekraal andthis particularmotorist was coming fromFistantekraal direction turning intoBoland Road.He/she clearly sawme but continued to
turn directly in front of me. There is noexcuse for her/his behaviour as visibilitywas good, the sun was not in the person'seyes and I was wearing a fluorescent yel-low jersey particularly to be clearly visi-ble. If I did not take evasive action thismotorist would have had my death onhis/her conscience for the rest of his/herlife.The motorist realised what happened
and hesitated for amoment and then spedoff in the same reckless manner.Please, I am making a serious plea to
motorist and cyclist alike to respect oneanother on the road. A few seconds of in-tolerance/impatience can cost a life andwill haunt the guilty party for the rest ofhis/her life.Mutual respect and tolerance will go a

Cycling still full ofdriver dangers
Hospital inpoor stateRecently I took a friend to Tygerberg Hos-pital and was shocked to see how deterio-rated the place is.How can a state hospital be in such con-
dition? Isn’t a medical environment sup-posed to be clean and sterilised at alltimes?The walls and floors are filthy; the pan-
els in the ceilings are either missing orhanging down half way.It looks like they are under construc-
tion, but that does notmean that the placehas to look like a pigsty.I recently visited a mediclinic and they
were also under construction, but the en-trances and inside were spotless (I knowthat we cannot compare the two, as oneis a private hospital, but still).It is disgusting how ourmedical system
can actually allow this to happen. It justshows us that if you cannot afford privatehospital or do not have medical aid, youwill end up in a dump and might not evencome out alive.As I can recall, the state hospitals never
looked like this before 1994.Where the is the minister of health? Do

In reference to some images and perti-nent comments made in the letter, we alsoacknowledge that we do need to addressthese concerns rapidly and urgently. Thehospital is also under reconstruction. Theexisting Tygerberg Hospital was commis-sioned in the early 1970s. Based on an as-sessment report on the building highlight-ing functional, operational as well as struc-tural issues, the Government of the WesternCape decided to replace the hospital. TheDepartment of Health as the user of the fa-cility is leading the process. In terms ofprogress we can report that we have ap-pointed a project manager, feasibility stud-ies were done and preparation and plan-ning of the new hospital is under way...
The hospital’s new cleaning contract willsoon be in place and will be significantlyexpanded to assure greater accountabilityand cleanliness in the hospital.

I totally agree with SN De Villers’ letter(“Geen reaksie oor Flaffie”, TygerBurger 8August) who isn’t satisfied regarding theregistration of pets.We also did what was requested and ex-
pectedofus, being lawabiding citizens livingin Durbanville.I went into the site (address that was creat-
ed and published) for us to register onlinethat same week.After seven attempts filling in all the pages
and submitting my online form I could notrefer back to find out whether it had in factbeen accepted or received by themunicipali-
ty.A week later I again went into the site to
see whether it had been accepted.I could not find anything so I emailed and
asked to please confirm my registration.Nothing happened.This I have done a few times since butwith
no response.Can themunicipality at least acknowledge
