The complainant became suspicious duringthe viewing and asked the woman who ex-actly sent her, to which the suspect apolo-gised and said that shemust be in the wronghouse.“The victim went to her room and noticed

that her purse was missing, along with cashand all her cards,” says O’Reilly before add-ing that a case of theft is being investigated.“Residents must be aware of these trends

and remember to report all suspicious per-sons and vehicles to your local police sta-tion,” she adds.Pedersen says that if one advertises any-

thing that requires a potential buyer to visit

one’s home, then one should ensure mini-mum safety precautions are followed.“Don’t be the only one who knows they’re

coming. Tell someone else that you’re ex-pecting someone to view whatever it is andgive them that person’s details. Preferably, don’t be aloneat the time.Have someone elsethere with you. If you’re not 100% comforta-ble with the sound of the person on thephone, rather turn themaway. Be extremelycautious of whom you are giving your ad-dress to and then telling them ‘sorry, I’m nothome on that day’,” he says.“Try to conduct anyGumtree-type sales in

public spaces and not at your home. We live

in rather challenging times and we all needto be security conscious in a preventativemanner.”In August this year in the article entitled

“Police search for known fraudster”, Tyger-Burger reported on another alleged rentalfraudster who advertised her apartment inMilnerton on Gumtree and then asked rent-ers to deposit money into her bank account. Some of the prospective tenants even

viewed the flat beforehand.Seven people paid the deposit, but when

the time came to move into the flat arrived, they found several others wanting to moveinto it on the same day.

There appears to be no respite for busi-ness owners after four armed suspectsrobbed LG Services in Montague Gar-

dens on Saturday morning. This happened just days after another in-

cident when armed suspects robbed a take-away store in Montague Drive.Provincial police spokesperson Col Tem-

binkosi Kinana said at aabout 08:15 on Sat-urday morning four armed suspects over-powered employees at an electronics shopin Montague Gardens.Milnerton police spokesperson W/O

Daphne O’Reilly confirmed the shop inquestion was LG Services.“According to reports, the employees

were opening the shop when four unidenti-fied men carrying firearms forced the staffto the back room and tied them up. The sus-pects then took two vehicles belonging tothe employees and loaded computers, in-cluding anundisclosed amount of cash, andfled the scene,” said Kinana.A case of armed robbery is being investi-

gated. This is the second time in two weeks that

LG Services has been targeted by criminalsafter entry was gained through the roof in

October.Meanwhile, on Wednesday four armed

suspects fled a take-away shop in a red Toy-ota Tazz after stealing cellphones, an iPadand cigarettes.Montague Gardens Business Forum’s

Schulla Pronk says staff and a customerwere forced to lie on the floor while the rob-bers searched for the safe. Two of Pronk’s family members were in

the shop at the time.“The robbers held their guns against the

heads of the victims,” exclaims Pronk. The suspects took the CCTV footage re-

corded in the shopwith them, butwere una-ware that cameras outside the premises al-so caught them on tape.“This increase in business robberies is

unacceptable,” says Pronk.“What makes it even more difficult to

bear is that the community safetyMECDanPlato said Montague Gardens would havehad a safety and security kiosk by middleof August. Two months later, and we aretold the caravan is still being built.”The kiosk will be manned by two safety

and security personnel and about 10 otherswould patrol the area during the day.Pronk says Montague Gardens business

owners have no choice but to just be patientand remain on their guard at all times.

The City of Cape Town has declared aself-imposed deadline of 6 Novemberto clarify issues and misconceptions

surrounding Wolwerivier. This statement by John Taylor, chairper-

son of the Wolwerivier Action Group(WAG), came after a Democratic Alliancemeeting in Table View where Premier He-len Zille was guest speaker.WAG raised various issues, which have

been reported on by TygerBurger, with Zil-le.Zille nonetheless referred the matter to

the speaker, Dirk Smit.“Smit announced that the city will have

a detailed report ready on the future ofWol-werivier within seven working days. Thedeadline is 6 November,” says Taylor.“We eagerly await this report and look

forward to further open dialogue and inte-raction with the city.”

In an email to Zille prior to the meeting,Taylor said if theWolwerivier developmentgoes ahead, WAG is greatly concernedabout potential problems arising from inte-grating six different communities into verysmall and densely packed shelters.“Given their dire circumstances, coupled

with the infiltration of drugs and alcohol, criminal activity, domestic violence andchild neglect is set to rise.”A day after the meeting, mayco member

for human settlements, Siyabulela Mamke-li, stating the department aimed to changethe lives of the beneficiaries for the better.“When the development is completed,

they will have services, space to expandtheir homes, and there will be communityfacilities and safe spaces for children toplay,” stated Mamkeli. The project, with a cost of approximately

R35 million, will see the accommodation ofa maximum of 500 families. The temporary relocation area near Wol-

werivier (where Richwood residents have

been moved) has resulted in numerous ob-jections from concerned parties. The living conditions, such as the spora-

dically flooded land they are occupying, ha-ve been well documented in TygerBurger. But Mamkeli stated the relocated Rich-

mond residents now have better access tobasic services. He states these families were issued with

a relocation kit (which includes variousbuilding materials), as well as a solar paneland light kit with cellphone charger. Theyhave also been provided chemical toiletsand standpipes. The Wolwerivier development is appa-

rently expected to start at the end of the ye-ar. The Richwood families will only then re-ceive serviced sites with security of tenureand electricity.“The units will have their own built-in

toilet and shower with full waterborne ser-vices. The units will be built to a high stan-dard and specification and will be clad withcolorbond or chromadek.” said Mamkeli.

City to clear Wolweriver concern

Creepy couple: MonteVista couple Arlene andKevin Newman got intocostume for the annualZombie Walk which tookplace on Saturday in aid ofthe Lucky Lucy Foundation.“We all looked like zombiesand scary, but all were goodpeople with kind hearts aswe raised money for theanimals,” Arlene says.“Zombies” from across CapeTown gathered at thePlanetarium in the CompanyGardens and walked throughthe CBD to Thibault Square.

Disabled people have until the end of No-vember to be assessed for theuse of theCityof Cape Town’s Dial-a-Ride service. This will be paid for by the City and no

individual will be included on the databaseif he or she has not undergone the assess-ment.It will determine whether individuals

are eligible for the service.“TheCity tries, as far as it canandwithin

its means, to assist those who cannot makeuse of regular public transport services. We are always striving to improve ourservice delivery, in particular to thosewhodo not have access to work opportunities,”says Mayoral Committee member forTransport Brett Herron.“However, we must fully comprehend

thedemand for the service andknowwhereour residents with disabilities live beforewe can make any adjustments to improvethe current operating model.”He further urges people with disabilities

to book for an assessment before the dead-line of Sunday 30 November.Appointments can be made by calling

0800 600 895 during office hours. The appointments will be scheduled be-

tween 10:30 and 21:00 fromMonday to Sun-day and the City will provide transportfrom the applicant’s home to TygerbergHospital and back. Those being assessed will need a certi-

fied copy of their identity document, proofof address, proof of income and a medicalreport.Applicants will also be asked to complete

a travel survey questionnaire, which willassist the transport department in deter-mining the demand for the service and un-derstanding the travel needs and patternsof those with disabilities.“Since May last year, the team of con-

tracted occupational therapists at Tyger-berg Hospital has only assessed half of theresidents who are currently on the data-base,” Herron says.“They are supposed to do 16 assessments

per day, but are currently only conductingfive. This indicates that a significantnumber of people who may be eligible touse the service have not been assessed andshould make an appointment.”

Kidrogen drivers took to the streets inTable View, Melkbosstrand and Mil-nerton lastweek to voice their discon-

tent towards their employers. In the process they burned tyres, blocked

Integrated Rapid Transport lanes, stoned aMyCiTi bus, and intimidated passengersand colleagues.

This illegal strikeby the employees of oneof theMyCiTi vehicle operating companiesreportedly saw police responding with rub-ber bullets and tear gas.

However, provincial police spokespersonLt Col André Traut refused to verify this.

“The appropriate measures were imple-mented to control the situation. I cannot re-veal anything else in this regard,” he said.

The tactical crowd control unit respon-ded to the scene.

When asked if any injurieswere reportedto the police, he responded by saying: “Notthat I’m aware of.”

Severe impactThe strike action also severely impacted

on the T01 and T03 trunk routes betweentheCivicCentre stationandTableView,DuNoon, Melkbosstrand, Atlantis and Centu-ry City, as well as the feeder services in Ta-ble View and Atlantis.

The unprotected strike was apparentlydue to wages.

What began as a peaceful demonstrationon Wednesday quickly escalated into 90 ormore drivers doing their utmost to disruptMyCiTi services.

It has been reported that stones werethrown at police vehicles in the chaos.

The City of Cape Town has condemnedthe strike “in the strongest possible terms”,saying that violence and intimidation willnot be tolerated.

On Thursday the city’s mayco memberfor transport, Brett Herron, said various vi-olent incidents were reported.

“At around 12:30 in ParklandsMainRoadstriking drivers assaulted a non-strikingbus driver and forced passengers off theMyCiTi bus. The driver managed to getaway with the bus. We are shocked and ap-palled by this behaviour. No form of violen-ce can be tolerated as a lawful or legitimateformof protest, nomatter the reason for thegrievances or unhappiness,” he said.

Returned to normalEarlier thatmorning at theUsasaza stati-

on (just opposite Du Noon) strikers stoneda MyCiTi bus.

Bus services returned to normal on Fri-day when all of the drivers reported for themorning shift.

V Meanwhile, the MyCiTi infrastructurealong Blaauwberg and Potsdam Roads wasrecently presented with the 2014 SAICE Re-gional Award for Technical Excellence inCivil Engineering, against strong competi-tion from a number of worthy projects inthe Western Cape.

This section of theMyCiTi network linksthe areas of Du Noon, Killarney and TableView with the city bowl, Camps Bay andSea Point, and involved upgrading the exis-ting Potsdam and Blaauwberg Roads, con-struction of a new carriageway and bus la-ne, signalising all of the intersections alongthe road to facilitate busoperations, andup-grading the footway network along the ro-ad.

After listening to the budgetspeech, which stated we will bepaying more taxes, I askedmyself, why aren’t theseforeign shop owners payingtaxes?

When you go into theirshops, you don’t receive tillslips from 99% of them.

At the 1% of the shopswhere you get till slips, itdoesn’t state the shop’s nameor the tax payment.

How many of these shops arelegal? Has it ever been investi-gated?

I believe that there arebillions of Rands in taxeswhich go unpaid and couldhelp our economy.

It is inequality. There are thousands of

foreign-owned shops across thecountry. It seems that theConsumer Protection Act,especially the right to returngoods, does not apply to them.

Consumers have the right toreturn unsafe or defectivegoods, and request a fullrefund for such goods –provided this is done within areasonable period.

Consumers have the right toreturn goods which were notpre-examined prior to delivery.

When you take goods back tothese shops, they refuse torefund you.

When we threaten them withthe police, they laugh at usand throw us out of their shop.

Can this be investigated?GAIL JANSE VAN RENSBURG

Dodgy tax inforeign shops

For many years South Africahas had laws making thepossession of an unlicensedfirearm a criminal offence(“Gun owners up in arms”,TygerBuger, 29 October).

I see they may table a law tomake the possession of a

Armed citizenryquells criminals

licensed firearm a criminaloffence. I suppose we must keepour legislators busy.

Interestingly, in New Yorkand Washington no person islegally allowed to own afirearm and they have thehighest armed crime rate in theUnited States, while Texas andAlaska – with the largestpercentage of legally ownedfirearms – have the lowestarmed crime rates. Switzerlandand Israel, with the mostheavily, legally armed citizens, have the lowest armed crimerates in the world.

As someone who has savedtwo lives with a licensedfirearm and never shot anyone,I say: “Let the criminal go infear!”

LIONEL LATIGANEmail

I am a registered competentfirearm owner

I agree that there should besome form of firearm control atshopping centres (“Gun ownersup in arms”, TygerBuger, 29October), but what is applicableto the patrons is applicable tothe complex owners.

How safe are the firearmstaken into safekeeping?

The persons handling theseweapons are, by law, supposedto be competent people. Howmany security personnel are inpossession of a certificate ofcompetency? Who takes respon-sibility for the weapons?

It is said the weapons arelocked in a safe and the key isgiven to you. Is there a dupli-cate key? No form of receipt orform of registration is presentto prove the weapon has beenhanded in for safekeeping. Ifthe weapon is misplaced, whatproof have I got it was handedin?

Those enforcing these lawsshould get their act togetherbefore enforcing laws they haveno idea about.

Canal Walk is supposed tohave high tech security in

place, yet crime is rife. Whereis the sophisticated securityand what training do thesecurity personnel have?

Is it not law, that any personwho carries a weapon issupposed to be a registered ascompetent? If security person-nel at Canal Walk are onlyarmed with batons, whatchance do they stand against anarmed patron? When securitycompanies are employed tosafeguard patrons, what guaran-tee has the patron got that theyare safeguarded?

Much research and investiga-tion is to be done beforeinnocent, law-abiding, regis-tered firearm owners aretargeted.

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat, has been quietlyworking on a side project that’s been

picking up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to play some of the music heloved outside of the band.

“This project started very organically,” hesays. Being a fan of blues himself, The Vio-lent Free Peace started out as a cover bandand a way to have fun.

“It kind of grew into something else.”Today the band, made up of Basson on gui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.

Raw and loudAlthough the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.

When they band first started, the line upwas constantly changing. Die Heuwels Fan-tasties’ Fred den Hartog even did a stint withThe Violent Free Peace and it was he whocame up with the band’s name.

The band was enjoying a “beer drinking/rehearsal session” when Fred suggested thename “Die Wrede Vrede”, but being an Eng-lish band, they decided to go with a translat-ed version.

“It worked out well because it’s an abso-lute pun and it works in the context of theband,” Basson says of his three-piece. “Plusyour name gets used big on posters becausethey have to write it all out”.

Basson will make his second turn on theTable Mountain Blues Summit stage whenhe performs with The Violent Free Peace inDecember.

“It’s an amazing event and there should bea lot more every year.” But Basson says it’sinteresting that he’s on the line up as hesometimes tries to steer clear of the “blues”label.

He says blues, especially in South Africa, has a bit of a cliched stigma attached to it.

“People usually think of old grey guys sit-ting in a corner playing the same 12 bar stuffover and over.”

His music is definitely influenced by blues

though. As a child, Basson listened to punkand metal, preferring not to listen to whathis dad was listening to, until he discoveredhis father’s vinyl collection at the age of 14.

“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude withthis big hat and pink cowboy boots and a re-ally beaten up guitar. I remember I put it onand from the first track, the virus set in.”

The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughnand Basson was hooked on the raw honestyof the blues.

Undeniable“It’s undeniable, if it’s in you, it’s in you.”Basson says his songs are like his chil-

dren, and he’s not ready to choose the oneshe’ll take on stage for the summit, but hemight just throw in a Led Zeppelin numberduring his set.

The Table Mountain Blues Summit runsat Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville on Satur-day 6 and Sunday 7 December with 20 actsperforming over the two days.

Tickets cost R340 for the whole weekendor R240 for the Saturday and R200 for theSunday, and are available at Computicket.Entrance is free for children under 10.V Like Basson Laubscher & The Violent Free Peaceon Facebook to stay up to date with Basson and hisshows.V Basson visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of what to expect from his performance atthe Table Mountain Blues Summit. EFC: LOCAL FIGHTER RARING TO GET INTO THE RING AT GRANDWEST

No fear for title fight

Luke Michael (left) and EFC light heavyweight champion Gideon Drotschie are raring to gofor EFC 35 on Thursday 6 November at GrandWest. PHOTO: STEHAN SCHOEMAN

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points
