Longmead Park in Delft is a new place ofpeace and pleasure for the neighbour-hood.

Last week The City of Cape Town’s mayor-al committee member for community servic-es, Tandeka Gqada, opened the newly-reno-vated park and encouraged the residents inthe area to take ownership of the area.

While the sun shone on young childrenand their mothers already taking advantageof some of the play equipment she encour-aged them to take ownership of the area andmake it a focus point of community aware-ness to protect it.

“In redressing past imbalances and green-ing our city, the city is undertaking an exten-sive upgrade programme in many areas,”she said.

“This park is part of that process and Ihope that this upgrade will assist us in ad-dressing the scourge of unwanted miseriesthat our community continues to face on adaily basis. The community needs to takeownership of this park and take good careof it.”

She also took time to thank local residentSumaya Abrahams and her husband, wholive opposite the park who put in great effortof their own to improve the facility withwhat little means they had at their disposal.

“At the time, there were only two piecesof play equipment on the site,” she said.

“We are happy to announce that the follow-ing upgrades have been made to the park: ad-ditional play equipment, along with rubber-ised matting; the installation of an under-ground irrigation system; grassing of thesite and planting of trees and shrubs; as wellas installation of fencing, terracing, stair ac-cess, lighting, benches, and bins.”

She also added that the community mustplay their part in to maintain the park.

Long service: TygerbergHospital employer JohannaWynand fromRavensmead recentlyreceived her 40yearlong service award. Pictured here are Beth Engelbrecht (deputy director of general secondary, tertiary and emergency care), Johanna Wynand, Craig Househam(head of Health), and Dimitri Erasmus (CEO of Tygerberg Hospital).

DelftPoliceare savouring their successesfrom the weekend.

According to the station commander forDelft, Brig Hendrik Jansen his staff are dedi-cated to make a difference in the lives of thecommunity.Jansen said that his staff arrest-ed a number of suspects during search andseizure operations:

. Four suspects in connection with mur-der;

. One in connection with house robbery;

. Four for robbery;

. Five for the possession of stolen proper-ty;

. Four for possession of stolen motor vehi-cles;

. One for domestic violence;

. 10 for possession of dangerous weapons;

. 10 for possession of tik;

. 15 for possession of dagga;

. Two in connection with incidents ofhousebreaking;

. One for rape, and

. Three for illegal possession of firearms.During these operations in the area police

also seized quantities of dagga, tik and man-drax tablets.

Three firearms with magazines and am-munition, were also confiscated, and they al-so recovered two stolen vehicles, one stolenin Delft and another in Milnerton.

Various electronic equipment, including aSamsung computer, a microwave oven, sev-en PlayStation games, and one Ultronic DVDPlayer was also recovered.

Jansen concluded by saying that the pub-lic must be aware that they can play theirpart in fighting crime by reporting criminalactivities in their neighbourhoods.

Delft cops have wide net

With the holiday season looming in Decem-ber police are calling on the community tobe conscious of their safety.

When it comes to assaults in the communi-ty police want you to be aware of:

. Knowing all your emergency numbers;

. Obtain medical assistance where neces-sary;

. Report all incidents of violence to thenearest police station;

. You have the right to apply for an Protec-tion Order;

. Do not take the law into your own hands;

. Obtain a full description of the perpetra-tor, and

. Do not be scared to report any acts of vio-lence or abuse to the police that takes placein your home.

Members of the community must also

know their rights as a victim of crime, andthis includes the right to be treated with re-spect and dignity, to offer and receive infor-mation, to get legal advice, protection andcompensation.

They also have some advice on how to dealwith anger and it starts with counting to 10very slowly, breathe deeply and it leads toassessing your situation in a much calmermanner.

You are also advised to sit down becauseit is more difficult to shout when you areseated.

It is also very important to use words in-stead of fists when expressing your emo-tions, and remove yourself from a situationof potential physical violence – rather returnwhen you are more in control of your emo-tions.

Thereare somenewhappyhome-owners in Belhar.

Last week the Western Cape Hu-man Settlements MEC BonginkosiMadikizela handed over 91 titledeeds in the area.

Ward councillor and chairman ofSubcouncil 6, Desmond Jaftha, saidthat he was very happy at this de-velopment in the area and thatmany of these people have been pay-ing rent for more than 30 years.

“At this ceremony we gave these

recipients, many of them over 60, asense of pride in owning theirhomes,” he said.

“This handover is also part of thedepartment’s strategy that wasstarted six years ago to inculcate asense of ownership and responsibil-ity amongst housing beneficiaries.

“These houses were originallysold to beneficiaries under a loanagreement and the title deeds werenot transferred from the govern-ment to the beneficiaries until theloans were paid off.”

He added that using the currenthousing subsidy, the government

pays an amount towards the out-standing loan, and if the loan iscleared using the subsidy contribu-tion, then the house is transferredto the beneficiary.

Daniel Adams, one of the recipi-ents was overjoyed at receiving thedeeds, adding that he was glad thathe could leave something for hischildren.

“We have been living here andpaying rent for so many years,” hesaid. “Sometimes we had to strug-gle, but now it is worth it becauseit is my house. All those who gothouses today must look after them.”

the Health Promoting Schools ap-proach.“We also aimed to create aware-ness of community resources by in-viting communitymembers and or-ganisations to the launch day thatincludedWomen on theMove,Will-ingHands, theDepartment of SocialDevelopment, the Department ofSports and Recreation, the NSRI,Metro EMS Training College aswell as other primary schools inBelhar.”While the community enjoyed theactivities at the launch day the stu-dents also stressed that they havealso encouraged the school to haveongoing projects.“The aim of our launch day wasalso to promote and create aware-ness of these projects in order to getthe community members in-volved,” said another student, Ro-byn Turnbull.“The four projects areGreenDay,First Aid, leisure groups and a de-bating club.“Green Day is a recycling projectin which the whole school is in-

volved in collecting cardboard, pa-per, newspaper and magazines forthe company Mpact.“We will be having inter-classcompetitions to see which class cancollect the most recycled materials.“Judging by the popularity of theresponse today the school will nowbe hosting an annual recyclingfashion show to raise awareness ofa clean and healthy environment.“Everybody enjoyed the show to-day and this project allows thelearners to understand that theycan have fun and be creative withmaterials that are easily available.“First aid was initiated to trainlearners and educators with basicfirst aid skills with the aim to havetrained personnel available duringbreaks, class and sporting events toensure a safe environment.“MetroEMSTrainingCollegehasagreed to train all Belvue PrimarySchool educators for free on levelone first aid by the end of the yearand NSRI has agreed to train all thelearners in CPR by the end of theyear.”Van Zyl added that the leisuregroups were initiated to motivateand empower Grade 7 learners.“The aim was to increase thelearners’ control over their lives bydeveloping their personal skillssuch as assertiveness, decisionmaking and socialisation in rela-tion to their social environment.

“This was done by exposing themto healthy leisure activities such aspampering sessions, sports and ed-ucational sessions about careersand drugs.“TheDebate Clubwas initiated toimprove the learners’ personalskills namely communication, as-sertiveness and confidence.Throughout the year they will haveinter-class and inter-school compe-

ADVERTORIAL

Old Mutual offers the complete range of retirement income solutions tomeet your specific lifestyle needs and circumstances… and is a specialistin making these retirement income solutions work for you.

Here are 3 retirement income solution options tochoose from:

GUARANTEED INCOME — TRY OUR MAX INCOME BONUSESCALATION GUARANTEED ANNUITY

A guaranteed monthly income with annual increases from bonusesdepending on market performance. This helps you by protecting thepurchasing power of your income against inflation.

MARKET LINKED INCOME — TRY OUR LIVING ANNUITYINVESTED IN OLD MUTUAL’S ABSOLUTE SMOOTHEDGROWTH FUND

This is a market linked income without the highs and lows associatedwith market fluctuations. The smoothing mechanism reduces short termmarket fluctuations. This ensures a smooth increase of income and nosudden changes to your income and your lifestyle if markets suddenlybecome volatile.

This option is available on both Old Mutual’s Fairbairn CapitalRetirement Income Plan and Max Investment’s Income InvestmentFunded Income.

A COMBINATION — TRY FAIRBAIRN CAPITAL RETIREMENTINCOME SAFETY PLAN

The Retirement Income Safety Plan combines the flexibility of a livingannuity and the security of a conventional guaranteed annuity. It givesguidelines on how much income you should draw down each year(known as a “draw down” rate). Living within these guidelines will giveyou a great chance of receiving a sustainable income for the duration ofyour retirement. However, should your investment value drop to a levelthat no longer generates a sustainable income, the safety features kickin automatically — you will then be moved into a guaranteed annuityfor the remainder of your life. So in short, the Safety Plan provides acombination of a living annuity’s flexibility (through fund choice, marketperformance and leaving a legacy), with the security of a guaranteedannuity if the markets work against.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT RETIRING?

In the years before you retire, it is important to know exactly what yourincome payout options are at retirement so that you can make the rightdecision and find a solution that will suit your needs and the lifestylethat you’d ideally like during your retirement. To demystify the world ofretirement income options, ask a financial adviser to explain the variousoptions that are available to you, so that you can choose the solutionthat suits you best.

WHAT IS AN INCOME ANNUITY?

An income annuity is a financial solution that you buy with yourretirement savings when you reach your retirement age. It is designedto provide you with an income during your retirement years accordingto your personal needs.

WHAT CHOICES ARE AVAILABLE TO MEET THOSE NEEDS?

You can choose between two types of annuities:

A guaranteed annuity provides an income for the rest of your life (oryou and your partner’s life). Your income will stop if you pass awayunless you have a joint annuity, which will stop when the last survivingpartner passes away.

To help counteract inflation (the rising cost of living) you can choose tohave your income increase over time. But keep in mind that a higherincrease rate will mean a reduced starting income. Other featuresinclude continuing payment to your partner or a lump sum paymentafter you pass away.

A living annuity is linked to the market’s performance. Here, your capitalis invested in the markets and you decide once a year how much of yourinvestment you need to draw (within some limits). It’s important not todraw too much income at the start, so that you do not run out of moneyas you get older. You choose what funds your capital is invested in.

When you pass away, the remainder of your capital can be paid out toyour beneficiaries.

The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA iscalling on Capetonians to consider theterrifying effects which fireworks canhave on animals ahead of Guy Fawkes (5November) and Diwali celebrations.

Cats and dogs can hear sounds at least twooctaves higher than humans, which is whythey are so scared by the sound of fireworks.

The SPCA is opposed to the use of any fire-works, which emit a loud noise, due to thetrauma and injuries they cause animals. Be-cause animals are able to hear a wider rangeof sounds than humans can, the sound fromfireworks is at least seven times louder tothem. Their natural response is to try andescape the sound with sometimes tragic con-sequences, a media release from the CoGHSPCA reads.

The Animal Protection Act clearly statesthat “it is illegal for any person to terrify anyanimal” yet despite the SPCA’s efforts to ed-ucate the public on the dangers and legali-ties of using fireworks and lobbying govern-ment for a total ban on the use of fireworks,injuries and trauma to animals occur eachyear during fireworks season.

The Firearms and Explosives OrdinanceAct also makes it illegal for any child underthe age of 16 to use or buy fireworks and itis also illegal to use or sell fireworks withoutan official permit except at an officially des-ignated site.

Yet, despite this legislation, fireworks arestill sold in many corner cafes to anyonewith money to buy and let off at home wheretheyposeapotential danger, themedia state-ments says.

Harming an animal with fireworks will re-sult in prosecution and concerned membersof the public are to please report any acts ofalleged cruelty to the CoGH SPCA 24-hourcontrol centre – 021 700 4140/59 or a/h to 083326 1604.

Members of the public can also contact themetro police 24-hour call centre to lodgecomplaints regarding firework activities on021 596 1999.

The CoGH SPCA’s Inspectorate will onceagain be on standby to respond to animalemergencies reported to its call centre (021700 4158/59 or after hours 083 326 1604).

The designated areas of the City of CapeTown where fireworks can be legally dis-charged, are (have to be confirmed):

•Bishop Lavis Sportsfield, Bishop Lavis;Wesfleur Sportsfield, Atlantis; MacassarBeach parking area; Swartklip Sports Com-plex, Mitchells Plain; Maidens Cove parkingarea, Camps Bay; Athlone Stadium parkingarea; and Strandfontein Pavilion, Strand-fontein.

ANDRÉ BAKKES

There were fireworks, a lasershow, traditional and moderndancing, a huge variety of foodstalls, plenty of great decor anddresses, but the most lasting im-pression of the Cape Town Diwa-li Festival at Ratanga Junctionon Saturday were the smiles.

Diwali, or “Festival of Lights” asit is known, is one of the most im-portant Hindu festivals of the yearand is normally celebrated by fami-lies by performing traditional ac-tivities together in their homes.

Festival director, ShivaniNaidoo, elaborates: “This is thefourth year the Diwali Festival hasbeen held in Cape Town. We are un-fortunately a non-profit organisa-tion, so funding is extremely chal-lenging and there was no directfunding for this year. Thankfullywe have a team of incredibly dedi-

cated young professionals onboard.”

Durban and Johannesburg’s fes-tivals are at this stage still muchbigger, but if theteam behind CapeTown’s Diwali is asmotivated asNaidoo insists thenit cannot fail togrow year by year.

“The Indian pop-ulation has grown alot over the last fewyears, but this ‘cele-bration of joy’ is forpeople from allwalks of life,” shesays.

“We all celebratelight over dark-ness,” she contin-ues.

Various artistsperformed on theday and the night,and it’s certain thateveryone who at-tended will havelasting memories ofa superbly organ-ised festival.
