    Whether youre building ablanket fort, or hanging

    up a banner, knowing afew basic knots can be aninvaluable addition to your

    DIY arsenal. This zineisnt an exhaustive catalog,but a quick-&-dirty guide.

    The 5 types of knots are:

    1. Stoppers (tie off ends)2. Bends (tie rope-to-rope)3. Loops (go around stuff)

    4. Binders (close tightly)5. Hitches (tie onto stuff)

    The best way to learn theknots in this zine is to

    just tie them a few times.

    1. The Stopper Overhand Knot

    This is not the worldsbest stopper, but you

    know what? Who cares!You already know howto tie this one & its goodenough most of the time,so go ahead and keep on

    using it when you need astopper. But, when youneed to actually tiesomething to somethingelse, please use one of the

    other knots in this zine.

    If you have two shorterbits of rope & want onelonger one then this is the

    way to go. It used to beused to tie down zeppelins.

    This isnt as strong as the

    zeppelin, but its sometimeseaser to tie. You donthave to learn both. If theropes arent the same

    girth, the gray one shouldbe the bigger of the two.

    3. The Loop Water Bowline

    This loop wont come un-done & can take a strain.

    If you want a lasso styleslip-knot, make a smallloop and then slip the end

    of the rope through it tomake a bigger loop.

    4. The Binder Constrictor Knot

    This is a very strongknot. You can use it forpretty much anything, in-cluding as a hitch. The

    best part is that it can betied in the bight. Thatsthe fancy way of sayingyou can tie it in themiddle of a piece of rope,

    i.e. you dont need accessto the ends of the rope.

    Constrictor Knot in the Bight

    (1) Form a loop.(2) Take the bottom ofthat loop and move it up,twisting it in the process.(3) Fold the loop youve

    brought up, backover & slip theknot over whateveryoure tying.

    Its easier than it sounds.

    5. The Hitch Buntline Hitch

    Buntline is some sort ofsailing term. Its a straight-

    forward hitch, for allyour hitching needs.
