Lathe machines are used for cutting diameters , drilling , reaming , boring holes. A lathe machine can cut many different materials such as nylon , brass , mild steel (we like to use En1APB witch is 10% leaded.) aluminium etc.

The type of tools you can on a lathe.1. RH cutting tool . For cutting down diameters.2. Chamfer tool. For producing a 45degree chamfer.3. Knurling tools . Producing a criss-cross Patton on the material.4. Parting off tool . Cutting of a peace of material you do not want.5. Boring bar. A form of drilling.6. Facing off tool. Facing off to for the datum.7. Centre in the tailstock. Goes in the tailstock and can support the

material and can help centre your tool.

A lathe can produce many different thing for industry and suppliers. For example at CEMAST we have 2 main thing we produce.

For example PEO L1 they produce a clutch aliment tool which is assessed. The things that the clutch aliment tool includes is 2 spacers 2 end nuts 2 plugs and 1 shaft.

PEO L2 however they have a mixture of using lathes and milling machines. But what they produce on the lathe is 1 screwed shaft 2 tommy bar end caps 1 tommy bar 2 guide bars.

A milling machine is used to cut flat surface. Using a selection of rotary cutting depending on the type of job. Milling machines can do a range of jobs such as drilling, slot cutting. The type of martials we can use on a milling machine is Aluminium, Brass, PTFE and many more plastics , stainless steel , mild steel . However it all depends how hard the material is for example if you was using mild steel then aluminium… aluminium on a mill can be cut at a faster RPM compared to mild steel.

A milling machine can produce many things that we can use in daily life industry and suppliers. In addition the type of work that PEO L2 produce are prime examples on what a milling machine can do. For example PEO L2 make a base plate witch include using a series of rotary cutting also other tools such as edge finders. Can make seam rollers for boxes by using a rounded nose cutter.

There are many hazards when working on a lathe… for example a chuck can be one if it has not been correctly secured.

Clothing is a hazard if it is not worn correctly for example if you was feeling hot in the workshop and you tie your jacket around you waste then it could become entangled due the spinning bars that move the saddle if you get to close also depending on the material it could be more fatal.

There are many hazard while operating a milling machine. For example the rotary cutter can be on a high speed and produce sparks . You can become entangled if you are not wearing the correct clothing. What ever the type of tool your using produce different types of swarf for example a fly cutter produce large amount that can fly all over the place. If a step on tray does not have any type of grip the when the operator can fall of. Another hazard can be the machine guard when in use and there is an emergency the kill switches can fail.

What is the difference between a lathe and a milling machine ?

• The difference between a milling machine and a lathe is a lathe is used for cutting down diameters and a milling machine is used for cutting on flat surfaces.

• The hazard between the two machine is the same as both can operate at high speed both use machine guards that can fail and emergency stops. The only difference is on uses a chuck and one uses a quill and a collet.
