Jim Hamilton

A STAR ATHLETE IN BOTHBASKETBALL AND BASEBALL

One of the most respected athletes to ever enter the halls of the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club is alumni member Jim Hamilton. Born in 1952, Jim graduated from Southside high school with a big decision to make. Whether to sign a professional baseball contract, play basketball at a major university, or attend a smaller college where he could play both baseball and basketball.

His senior year of high school, Jim averaged 30 points and 20 rebounds per game on the basketball team. This was long before the 3 point play. He made all-conference his junior and senior seasons and scored 49 points in one game. As a sophomore, his team lost by two points in the State championship. His junior team was 24-3, and his senior team was State runner-up.

In 1970, Hamilton was named MVP of the High School Basketball All-Star game. As soon as the All-Star game was over, his family hurried back to Fort Smith so he could play in the American Legion baseball district tournament. Pro baseball scouts were lining up to watch Hamilton, while during his basketball games, major college coaches were making him offers to attend their schools.

Jim Hamilton began his athletic career at the Wheeler Boys Club when he was only 5 years old. He rode the bus for 25 cents from south Fort Smith to the Wheeler facility for practices. He played baseball at the Club for 12 seasons, Jim also played basketball at the Club before he started playing Jr. High ball. When he was 15 years old, he led the Fort Smith Boys Club to a State title in Babe Ruth baseball. At age 18, he was offered a $ 25,000 bonus to sign with the New York Mets.

With basketball offers from the University of Arkansas, Memphis, Tulsa, Missouri State, Oklahoma, Arkansas Tech and Ouachita, Jim was still torn between which sport to choose – basketball or baseball. Finally, after discussing his future with his parents, Jim’s father Ralph decided his son should attend college. To make sure he could play both sports, Jim signed a scholarship with Ouachita Baptist University.

At Ouachita, Hamilton made an immediate impact on the baseball and basketball teams. His freshman season, he was honorable mention All-A.I.C.(Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference) and was All-A.I.C in both baseball and basketball during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. His dream of playing professional sports was realized when he signed as a “free agent” with the St. Louis Cardinals. He reported to St. Petersburg, Florida and then on to Sarasota, where he was greeted by long-time Cardinal Scout Hal Smith. Smith is another former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member who was a two-time National League All-Star.

“I learned a strong work ethic from my Dad” said Jim Hamilton. After spending 3 years as an assistant coach at Ouachita, Jim spent 31 years working as a teacher and coach in the public schools of Arkansas. A few years ago, he was inducted into the Ouachita Baptist Sports Hall of Fame. Quite an honor for one of the great athletes to ever wear a Boys Club uniform.
