The month of October is known for Halloween. Towards the end of the month two blockbuster horror movies hit theaters. The highly anticipated Paranor-mal Activity 2, which made nearly $50 million in its first weekend terrified people all over the United States. Then a week later Saw continued their annual film, but there was a new twist to this one, it was shown in Digital 3D. The recent Saw films have declined in the box office, so they wanted to spice things up, by showing it in 3D. Saw is known as a bloody, gory movie that does not bring interest to many adults, but it is a hit with teenagers. The movie is rated R, so some teens struggle to get into the movie, since you must be 17 to be permitted. But once in the seats, the audience is eager to find out how Saw uses the 3D technology to bring a great horrifying experience to the screen. With a few twists and turns, Saw is an interesting movie that is different from the rest with eye-popping 3D. Then there was Paranormal Activity 2, of course the sequel to Paranormal Activity. The first film was a small film that did not cost much to make and was only shown in select theaters. Once the buzz got around that it was one of the scariest mov-ies ever, then it began playing all over. The sequel was highly anticipated and people of all ages wanted to enjoy this scary experience.

The setting of Paranormal Activity 2 is at a house where a video camera monitors the house for suspicious acts. The unthinkable is bound to happen, and it leaves the crowd frightened out of their seats. Paranormal Activity 2 is said to be scarier than the first film, and it has left some people up all night not wanting to go to bed. Since forming in 1992, Weezer has become one of the most successful bands of the last decade. During the 90’s, they were a cult band not gaining much of a following. One of their first gigs was opening up for a band featuring Keanu Reeves. Their debut album Weezer (also known as The Blue Album because of the blue background) featured top singles including Buddy Holly, Say it Ain’t So, and Undone – The Sweater Song. They also became known for their creative mu-sic videos. Director Spike Jonze placed the band perfectly into a scene from Happy Day’s. The first album was certified triple platinum, and is their highest selling album to date. They then released Pinkerton in 1996. This album got horrible reviews, including a reader poll by Rolling Stone, that put it on the list of the worst albums of 1996. But people talked about it, and it became a cult phenomenon. They are re-releasing it this year. They then released another album named Weezer, which became known as the Green Album for the green back-ground. MTV gave the songs Hash Pipe and Island in the Sun lots of plays on their channel. They released Maladroit in 2002. It was more of a experimental album, but received harsh criticism. In 2003, they released Make Believe. This album had the song Beverly Hills, which was one of the most popular songs of that year and one of iTunes top downloads. It was certified platinum in 2006. In 2007, they made another self titled album, but it also became known by its color as the Red Album. Their video for the song Pork and Beans featured many YouTube hits. The album also featured the song Troublemaker. Through the 2000’s, Weezer has released seven albums and has had continued success. This year they released two albums Hurley and Death to False Metal. Hurley was named after a character from Lost and has his face on the album cover. Even though the band is getting older with time, they have a sound that remains unique to them. So look for Weezer to continue their style of nerd-rock for years.

War. The word itself is, truly, very sharp and painful. We hear it all the time, some of us live it through stories of friends and relatives, but none of us have experienced it first hand, unless you are a teacher. Every-one knows about the situation and the harshness of the battlefield, but does anyone know exactly what the sol-diers were feeling? Canadian journalist Trish Wood does. She sat down with 29 service members from every branch of the military and got their raw, first person stories, which she compiled into a memoir about the war. T h e b o o k , W h a t Wa s A s k e d o f U s : A n O r a l H i s t o r y o f t h e I r a q Wa r b y the Soldiers Who Fought It, is packed with 40 accounts of the frontline battles in chronological order.

In the words of Trish Wood, “There is heroism in tel l ing the unvarnished truth about the war, and if there was an award for that, I would bestow it on every person in this book.” I know how awesome it is to sit down with your parents or grandparents and hear about their stories of war. The rawness and valor of the stories always left me speechless. For that reason, this book is an amazing one to read. Reading the words felt exactly like sitting down with the Iraqi war veterans and talking through their personal experiences overseas. The book has interviews from people who experienced the battlefield in every different aspect. There are medics who talk about how they had to race in-between tanks to reach buildings with wounded sol-diers. Snipers talk about how they had to train their eyes to adjust to the long distances. Drivers talk about how they had to focus on seeing the entire area around the vehicle, not just what the windshield would allow. Most books with interviews are set up where the question is asked and the response follows. In What Was Asked of Us, there is a title, some background information, the name and rank of the soldier, and their story. As you read, you feel as though Trish Wood said, “Just tell me your story.” Wood does such a great job making every-thing tie together that you don’t realize how much you’ have read until you close the back cover and beg for more. This is a great book from start to finish, especially for war buffs or veterans. It will keep you fully involved and interested. Because each account is told so vividly, you get the picture painted in your head and you can easily watch each soldier perform their assigned duties. If you have not read this book quite yet, put it on your to do list and read!

“The Lions drop their final game and fall to a season ending 2-7 record.” The expectations for this past sea-son were higher than what it has been in previous seasons. The Lions definitely had the raw ability, but the mental aspect was lacking. As the season moved on, many began to doubt what they saw in week one against Taylorville. Was that just a really good game played by the Lions, or were they really that good at the beginning all season? Questions began to fly and many did not expect the answers which were given back. Many observ-ers could see the discipline was lacking as the game progressed and saw the team fell apart. This year play-ers did not point fingers and blame other people, instead they just hung their head as a sign of embarrassment.

Many wonder what happened to that team that was expecting playoffs throughout the season. Others won-der why the team could not play that well in the second half. Lastly, people wondered if it could be the coaching staff. The pressure was relieved after the Lions had received their fifth loss on the season and playoff hopes were gone. The practice sched-ule was a lot more lenient, and there was more fun being pushed into practice. However, on the field Friday night, it was strictly business. The best game that the Lions played was in a win over the Southeast Spartans. The Lions had a phenomenal perfor-mance in the first half, putting them up 34-6. The Lions executed their offensive playbook and held the Spartans on defense except for a few times. Once the Lions had let up a little bit, the Spartans scored two more times. The final score was 48-18. The best part about this game was it was Senior Night. There were 15 seniors to walk down the track with their parents and other escorts. The younger cheerleaders made a pathway flailing their pom poms in the air as each senior walked through. Bes ides the ac t iv i t i e s be fo re the game , t he L ions have someth ing to look fo rward to , Sophomore Freddie Lomprez (10), he took some snaps from the spread offense and got some good yard-age. The future is looking promising with Freddie at quarterback and Nytro Glover (11) as running back.

The bright lights over your head, the screaming fans, the sound of whistles, the quarter back throw-ing, and the defense ready to stop the offense. These are the sights and sounds of a high school foot-ball game right? Actually, what is missing is one of the game’s most traditional aspects: the school band. T h e L a n p h i e r H i g h S c h o o l b a n d i s c o m p o s e d o f a b o u t 3 0 p l a y e r s i n a l l . T h e band includes flutes, saxophones, trumpets, clarinets, trombones, a baritone, and of course percus-sion. The band is hoping to continue to grow over this year and into years in the future. What is the Lanphier band doing now that football is over? The band is preparing for a winter concert, as well as the high school basketball season; during which, the band will be performing one night at the city tournament. The band director is Ms. Kittie Hose, and is her very first year as the Lanphier Band Director. The band was finally back out on the field marching, something that the group had not done for a couple of years. The band also received a boost in numbers when the Lincoln Magnet School band accompanied them out on the field at a Lanphier home football game against the Rochester Rockets on Friday, October 8. The Lanphier band was also aided by the Lanphier zero hour choir. This group vol -unteered to be flag twirlers for the band as the band performed the song: “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” The group had practiced together for many early mornings in Lanphier’s Lober-Nika gymnasium.

Lanphier had not had a flag group for several years because of the small numbers in the band. However, this year when Lanphier’s choir had all of their work down pat, the entire choir volunteered to give their time to this cause, and did well executing it. The help was greatly appreciated, and it not only helped make the band look better at several football games, but also at the homecoming parade. As long as all goes as planned, the flag twirlers will be back to help the band next year, but whether or not the flag twirlers will be from the choir or band members has yet to have been decided. Recently, on Columbus day, several members of the band went to audition for IMEA, which stands for the Illinois Music Educators Association. IMEA is having a concert this year at Western Il-linois University. The only musician from the Lanphier band accepted this year was Ty Daniels (11). The band is continuing to grow and improve all the time. They also have goals that are ready to be accomplished. If you play an instrument and have wondered what time is a good time to join band, the answer is NOW! Lanphier band is always ready to add new members, and the next one could be you!
