Summary of all activities of the HRD celebration:

Our SCORP team prepared a “Countdown to World Human Rights Day 2013”, promoting the 30 human rights described in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google, ODEM Blog), our ODEM members and other IFMSA members (Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Ghana, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria and Quebec) collaborated to publish scientific and personal reflections about human rights. Our SCORP team organized and participated in the “Walk for your Rights!ˮ walk-a-thon in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic (DR), educating community members about their rights.

Detailed description of activities:

Starting on November 13, 2013, we prepared a “Countdown to World Human Rights Day 2013”, promoting each of the 30 rights listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google, ODEM Blog), our ODEM members and other IFMSA members from Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Ghana, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria and Quebec collaborated to publish personal and scientific reflections about human rights. On December 7, 2013, we organized and participated in the walk-a-thon, “Walk for your rights!” in San Pedro de Macorís, DR, educating community members about their rights.

“Countdown to World Human Rights Day 2013”: After ODEM members submitted their scientific and personal reflections on human rights, SCORP Local Coordinators prepared these reflections into graphics to facilitate promotion on the social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google, ODEM Blog).

“Walk for your Rights!” walk-a-thon 2013: ODEM members created green flags with each human right described in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They also prepared green balloons, wore green visors, and developed an audio that mentioned each human right.

Other Comments:

These SCORP activities also included the participation of other ODEM members from the ODEM Standing Committees of SCOPE, SCOPH, SCOME and SCORA. ODEM members also promoted community participation, including personnel from different local response teams, including Civil Defense, Fire Department, Police Department, and the Metropolitan Transport Authority.

Evaluation of the event/Outcomes/Pros & Cons:

As the first major ODEM celebration of World Human Rights Day, our collaborative planning facilitated the successful participation of 35 IFMSA members from the DR and seven other countries (Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Ghana, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria and Quebec). In addition to effective teamwork, our SCORP creativity utilized social media, as well as radio and television programming, to promote our SCORP message about human rights to the local, national and international communities. Since the walk-a-thon was the first ODEM health activity that was implemented outside of the capital of Santo Domingo, 15 ODEM members from five DR medical schools traveled to San Pedro de Macorís and participated in this national SCORP event.

Impact on the community:

ODEM members from Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís and La Vega successfully utilized the technology of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google, ODEM Blog) to promote the SCORP message to local, national and international community members. In addition, by implementing the walk-a-thon in San Pedro de Macorís, ODEM members demonstrated a physical presence in the local community as well as strong support for human rights in the DR.


Possibility of repeating activities next year:

With the success of the first major World Human Rights Day 2013 events in the DR, via social media reflections and the walk-a-thon, our SCORP team plans to continue this SCORP celebration for World Human Rights Day 2014.
