Intended UseThe Type SP87300 SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring HotPlate is UL listed and has been designed tomeet OSHA and other safety standards. It isused for procedures requiring temperaturesfrom 100°F (38°C) to 424°F (218°C).

The unit consists of 1) a heated aluminumtop plate, 2) an adjustable electronic tempera-ture control and 3) an adjustable electronic stir-ring speed control. See Figure 1 for the shapeand general features of the unit.

General UsageDo not use this product for anything other thanits intended usage.

Principles of OperationThe top plate is heated by a tubular heatingelement cast into an aluminum top plate. Thetemperature of the plate is controlled by a pri-mary electronic feedback control. The primaryelectronic control serves to limit the top platetemperature under normal operating condi-tions. A secondary bimetallic thermostat is in-stalled as a safety feature to control the tem-perature should the primary electronic controlfail. The secondary control will limit the topplate temperature to 280°C (536°F). The stir-ring speed on a SAFE-T SHP9 is controlled byan electronic control. The stirring motor locatedin an explosion-proof enclosure is combinedwith a powerful magnet to provide excellentcoupling with a stir bar. All control andelectrical connections are contained within thealuminum explosion-proof enclosure. Tempera-ture monitoring is provided by inserting a ther-mometer in the top plate well. (The thermome-ter is optional — part # MEX126.)

NoteThe Type SP87300 SAFE-T SHP9Stirring Hot Plate is UL listed explosion-proof for Class I, Division I, Group Cand D locations where flammablegases or vapors are present in suffi-cient quantities to produce explosive orignitable mixtures. The Group C and Dclassification specifies hazardousatmospheres containing either flamma-ble gases or vapors of flammable liq-uids (see NFPA 497 and NFPA 321).

Introduction

Note: Max Temp. is the Temp. at the center of top plate.

Site SelectionInstall the SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring Hot Plate ona level, sturdy surface and allow space for ven-tilation.

The electrical specifications are located onthe back of the stirring hot plate. Consult cus-tomer service if your electrical service is differ-ent than that listed on the specification plate.

Your SAFE-T SHP9 Stirring Hot Plate isdesigned for permanent installation. Permanentinstallation is made possible with integralmounting lugs and 1/2” (1.3 cm) conduit with18” (45.7 cm) of lead wire provided.

Leads are factory sealed to meet therequirements of Article 501 of the NationalElectrical Codes (NEC). The SAFE-T SHP9Stirring Hot Plate must be hardwired per NEC(USA) or CEC (Canada) requirements.

An external switch or circuit breaker needsto be included in the building installation inclose proximity of the unit as a means to dis-connect supply circuit. Overcurrent protectiondevices should be included in the installation. The unit can be connected to a branch circuitnot exceeding 20 Amps.

The stirring hot plate installation must con-form with installation requirements for electricalequipment intended for use in Class I, Group Cand D hazardous locations as defined by theNEC and electrical code requirements of yourarea.

CautionMinimum allowable spacing betweenstirring hot plate and any vertical sur-face is one inch (2.54 cm).

WarningTo avoid electrical shock this stirring hotplate must be installed by a competent, qualified electrician who is familiar withinstalling explosion-proof electricalequipment and ensures compatibilityamong the stirring hot plate specifica-tions, power source and groundingrequirements. Grounding requirementsfor hazardous areas are specified inArticle 501 (and Article 250) of theNational Electrical Code. Consult localelectrical code requirements also. Allunits are provided with an equipmentgrounding lead that should be used asthe primary equipment ground connec-tion for the unit.

OPERATION

Setting the TemperatureDial (Control) Switch Turn clockwise to thedesired temperature. Dial marks indicate ap-proximate surface temperature in °C. When thetemperature for a given dial setting has beenreached, the control will regulate the hot plate. To turn OFF hot plate, turn dial switch fullycounterclockwise to the OFF position.

Use of Dial ThermometerThe optional dial thermometer (part # MEX126)can be used to set and monitor the tempera-ture of the aluminum top plate.

Heating Metal VesselsMetal vessels may be heated safely on theSAFE-T SHP9 without the danger of the vesselreflecting enough heat back to the top to causethe aluminum to soften. The electronic controlin the SAFE-T SHP9 will regulate the alu-minum top plate temperature.

WarningTo prevent ignition of hazardous atmos-pheres, the aluminum explosion-proofenclosure chambers must be keptclosed (screws securely tightened)whenever the unit is in operation and/orconnected to power supply circuit.

Hot Surface“Caution: Hot Surface. Avoid Contact.”The top plate will remain hot withoutvisual indication for some time afterthe unit is turned off.

WarningTemperature cycling over a temperaturerange greater than 5°C with a period ofapproximately 6 minutes may be observedwhen operating the SAFE-T SHP9 at220°C or higher. If such cycling isobserved, the unit is functioning underabnormal or fault conditions and the sec-ondary bimetallic thermostat is controllingthe top plate temperature. Under these cir-cumstances, the unit should first be turnedoff at both the heat and stir dial switchesand the external circuit breaker andallowed to cool completely. Next, in anatmosphere absolutely free of flammableliquids, gases, and/or vapors, test the heatcontrol function of the SAFE-T SHP9 atseveral temperature settings within therange of 38°C to 220°C. If the top platetemperature of the unit again cycles with aperiod of approximately 6 minutes over atemperature range greater than 5°C whenramping to or operating at 220°C, returnthe unit to the factory.

WarningTo prevent ignition of hazardous atmos-pheres, do not use electrical equipmentsuch as a thermocouple and pyrometerto monitor the hot plate temperatureunless it is UL listed for the same haz-ardous atmospheres and temperaturerating as the SAFE-T SHP9. The ther-mocouple and pyrometer could serveas a source of ignition.
