Whisky or whiskey refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash. Different grains are used for different varieties, including barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize (corn). Most whiskies are aged in wooden casks (generally oak), the exception being some corn whiskeys. With few exceptions, the spelling is Scotch, Canadian, and Japanese whisky (plural: whiskies), but Irish and American whiskey (whiskeys).

Tequila is an agave-based spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 kilometres (40 mi) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The volca-nic soil in the region surrounding Tequila is particularly well suited to the growing of the blue agave, and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested there each year. Mexican laws state that tequila can be produced only in the state of Jalisco and limited regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

Vodka is a distilled beverage. It is a clear liquid which con-sists of mostly water and ethanol purified by distillation—often multiple distillation—from a fermented substance, such as grain (usually rye or wheat), potatoes or sugar beet molasses, and an insignificant amount of other substances such as flavorings or unintended impurities.

Mixing Instructions:

Pour Jack Daniels into large glass filled with ice. Pour Coca-Cola into glass. Stir lightly.

MargaritaIngredients:

› 1 1/2 oz. Tequila › 1/2 oz. Triple sec › 1 oz. Lime juice › Salt

Mixing Instructions:

Rub rim of cocktail glass with lime juice, dip rim in salt. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into the salt-rimmed glass, and serve.

Vodka & CranberryIngredients:

› 2 oz. Vodka › 5 oz. Cranberry Juice

Mixing Instructions:

Pour vodka and cranberry juice into shaker. Fill a highball glass almost full of ice cubes, and dump ice into shaker. Shake well and pour drink into highball glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
