Bilateral Aid. Sent from one country to another.Can be money, equipment, experts.

Multilateral Aid.Comes from a central organisation –e.g. the UN or World Bank.

Emergency Aid. Usually given following a natural disaster.

Tied aid and Untied aidTied aid comes with STRINGS attached.This means that aid is given but there are conditions imposed by the donor country.This usually means that the aid has to be spent on equipment bought from the donor country, even although the same equipment could be bought cheaper from another country.

Self-Help Schemes

They involve the local community

They are usually long term.

They involve Appropriate Technology –this means they can be run and repaired cheaply.

They make use of local skills and materials

The benefits are felt in the local area.

Project –Large scale aid.

These schemes are very expensive and need huge amounts of aid. Building a dam and power station

They will involve a lot of people at the building stage, but very few after completion.

They are unlikely to benefit the local communities.

They do often attract foreign business, and so investment into the country.

Emergency AidThis type of Aid is needed after a NATURAL DISASTER.

It is SHORT TERM

It will be needed immediately

It does not last long

It does not have a lasting effect on the Development of the country that needs it.

Emergency Aid

Long Term Aid is needed after a disaster to help with the rebuilding.

Sometimes the traditional designs of buildings need replaced with something safer.

Military Aid

One of the types of Aid is military Aid. This is given by developed countries to “friendly” countries. They would expect to have access to the country in return.

Self- Help Schemes.

This particular scheme helped local people to make chairs from weapons after a war.

Self –Help schemes are the best type of Aid.Why?

Long Term Projects

Bosnia is a country that is recovering from many years of CONFLICT.

Because of this, they need help to develop the country in the long term.

Long Term Aid

These seeds were given by Oxfam to enable people to make a living from farmland that was devastated in the recent conflict.

Farming aid

This farm project in Guatemala in South America is another example of Long Term Aid.

It involves the whole community, and so the benefits are felt by the whole community.

Clean Water.This is one of the most vital long term aid projects throughout the developing world.

Clean Water prevents people catching many diseases, and slows down Infant Mortality.
