Types of Interviews Part 2
The In-Person Interview
• Gives you the opportunity to meet the candidate and see their professionalism in person
• Should be conducted in a quiet and interruption free room
• Can be conducted by one person or a group of employees
The Group Interview
Why use them?• To save time and money– 1 hour in a group interview of 12 vs. 12 hours for
one-on-one conversations• Can be used as the pre-orientation “orientation”• To observe interaction among others– Especially important for positions where people
skills are a must– Determine personality types for team building
The Group Interview Formats
• Employer Presentation about the company– Followed by a group question-and-answer session
• Problem-Solving Session– Employer provides a hypothetical situation and
candidates must work together to come up with solutions
• Group-Oriented work-related task– Candidates must find a way to perform together
May also choose to ask questions of individual candidates
The Group Interview: What to Look For
• Knowledge about the company
• Communication Skills• Analytical Skills• Leadership Skills– Ability to influence and
motivate others• Interpersonal Skills– How candidates work together
in a group• Ability to handle stress
The Group Interview: Your Role as a Facilitator
• Ensure candidates have an equal opportunity to provide information and demonstrate their skills
• Keep the interview flowing from one activity to another and stay on schedule
• Provide candidates with clear instructions on the purpose of each activity and what is required of them
