Is Dung a resource?

Page 11: Types of Resources

There was a time in Punjab when the prosperity of its villages could be gauged by piles of cow dung that were kept by the villagers. These piles or ‘guharey’ indicated that the villagers had ample number of cattle as huge piles indicated higher number while lower piles indicated lesser quantity of cattle was owned by the villagers. However, most youngsters are oblivious to the term ‘guharey’ as they remain aloof to their dying heritage. When the cakes of cow dung used to get dried, these would be arranged in form of piles in open spaces or in the fields owned by the cattle owners. Quite a lot of skill needed to be applied while making these piles and the process was much more than just a daily chore. Besides, cow dung cakes provided a useful fuel and these were treated as important field manure.
