• WHEN DESIGNING WITH TYPE, CONSIDER THE NATURE OF THE COMPOSITION AND THE FUNCTION OF THE DESIGN
Consider Concordant or Contrasting
NOT
Conflicting Typestyles
CONCORDANT using one typestyle for the entire
composition if you are using a single font, consider using
a variety of widths and weights to provide some visual variety within the uniformity
CONTRASTING using two extremely different font styles with
a composition Contrast is key; a highly decorative
letterform works well with a neutral one; a heavy sans serif pairs nicely with a thin
serif
FYI….when designing with fonts, limiting the number is ideal. Too many fonts can distract from the content rather than support it
CONFLICTING (A BIG NO, NO!) Using similar but not the same font style is
NOT recommended since it does not provide enough contrast within the composition nor will help with unifying the overall look.
It will look like a mistake has been made by the designer.
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF CONCORDANT AND CONTRACTING DESIGNS…
Gestalt Theory---- “wholeness”“the total is worth more
than the sum of the parts”
