COMMERCIAL PROJECT: WITS CAMPUS CENTRE EXTENSION - ALTERATIONS

Projects also completed under this banner, was Framework projects for WITS University at their Education Campus in Parktown Johannesburg. The projects included a new Health Science building, and Campus Centre Extension Alterations, Bohlaleng Classroom Extension Alteration, Lesideng Lecture Theatre, the Public Health Teacher Support Facility completed in 2013; with total Project Framework value totalling R250million. The Framework contracts was awarded in 2010, that ran the course of three years with TYRIS being involved at inception of projects for the benefit of value engineering, and to allow quick response to needs should funding become available for any new projects for WITS University.

The projects referred to above included a new Health Science building (15000m2), adjacent to Conacher and Williams Blocks on the Eastern end of the Wits Education Campus. The building includes a shared 400-seat lecture theatre, tutorial and seminar rooms for expanded undergraduate classes, computer laboratory, resource centre and facilities for additional undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as over 100 academic offices, including meeting

and common rooms. The facilities will adequately accommodate the full School of Public Health as well as the teaching and laboratory space needs of some Departments from within the current Medical School or hospital.

The Campus Centre Extension preceded by the construction of two additional floors to the main Campus Centre Administration Building. The project provides additional administration facilities, including offices for up to 90 staff, meeting rooms and break out space.

The Bohlaleng Classroom Extension presented cost-effective opportunities for the conversion of small tutorial rooms (capacity 40) into 4 large seminar venues (80 to 120) for the enhancement of high quality teaching and learning. The outward extension of the existing building at first floor level enabled construction activities to be undertaken with minimal disruption to other academic activities inside the building.

Also completed on the WITS Education Campus was Lesideng Lecture Theatre that entailed a new 500-seat lecture theatre accessed off the first floor concourse linking Lesideng and Bohlaleng teaching blocks.

True to our mission statement: “build lifetime relationships with clients”, other projects worth mentioning under this section is the new PRINSHOF LECTURE HALL COMPLEX for the University of Pretoria that was awarded to TYRIS Construction based on the reference provided by WITS University for projects successfully completed in 2012.

The new four storey building complex of approximately 11 500 m², completed in 2015, comprised of a semi-basement, 4 x 400 seats lecture halls, 66 x administration offices (student administration for physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, education innovation and ethics department), interstitial floors for student studying, student health clinic, cafeteria, gym and external works. Interesting facts to mention is the intricate façade elements installed. This included the installation of Façade Grata Brise Soleil sunscreen louvres, Carl Stahl Cable System, Mentis Grip Weld gratings and powder coated infused mild steel plates. The latter which was installed by means of Rope Access, with a total of 20100 No. “100 x 100mm plates” that was fixed to a galvanized steel frame, which gives the effect of a wave in a light breeze.

A monumental task and the first undertaking of such in South Africa. Challenges also faced on this project included heavy rains and flooding during basement construction, steel strike and glass shortages. All of which TYRIS overcame, with the project completed on time and within budget to the complete satisfaction of the client.

TYRIS was involved at Automotive Incubation Centre at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa’s (FMCSA) Silverton plant. The project entailed the 7 200 m2 supplier incubation facility/warehouse structure. Other project with similar scope included the Pomona Warehouse, a New Factory for EDS Properties in Kempton Park; New CTM Store in Secunda and JD Group Warehouse in Vryburg. Recently TYRIS has been appointed by the CIPF for a 7500m2 Goedeburg Warehouse in Kempton Park scheduled for completion in May 2016.

At the Sasol Secunda Plant, TYRIS was awarded projects that forms part of their expansion project, which has been designed to increase liquid fuels and electricity capacity at the world’s largest coal-to-liquids (CTL) complex. These projects include: Gas Production Control Buildings for the Western and Eastern plant area, as well as new Shutdown and Ablution Facilities located inside the primary plant area.

TYRIS has successfully completed a range of project for Exxaro – Grootegeluk Coal Mine. The projects entailed the construction of the New Central Laboratory building facility; and Expansion and Alterations of Diesel & Machine Workshop in aid of the brownfield expansion project aimed at supplying State-owned power utility Eskom with power-station- grade coal for its Medupi power station.

TYRIS successfully completed the construction of Waterberg Access and Logistics Upgrade at the Exxaro – Grootegeluk Coal Mine to the value of R100million, that was handed over in September 2015. The work entailed new Building Works and Civils Works that includes, but are not limited to 8500m2 concrete paving, 30,000m3 interlocking paving, 35,000m2 Asphalt, 2 x weigh bridges and 500 steel carports.

entailed bulk earthworks

and construction of a

terrace of approximately

170,000m2, concrete

works totalling

12, 000m3; and

800tons of structural

steel erected

over 10 months’

construction

period.

TYRIS is currently undertaking the construction of two new projects for Eskom that entails Civil and Building work for a new 275kV yard in Germiston, named Simmerpan Substation; and the expansion of 400kV yard and building a new 132kV HV yard for Pinotage Substation in Somerset West in the Western Cape. Both Simmerpan and Pinotage Substation is scheduled for completion in Feb 2017.

Simmerpan Substation entails work to the value of R87million. Work that includes constructing a new 60,000m2 platform; with a cut to fill exercise of 170,000m3; 5000m3 of concrete works; 1400m of HIGH SECURITY MESH FENCING and 3200m Copper earthmat.

While Pinotage Substation contract value is R117m and requires a 58,000m2 platform construction with a bulk earthworks cut to fill exercise of 300,000m3; 7000m3 of concrete works; 170tons Structural Steel; 1200m 2,4m high barrier security fencing and 1360m Copper earthmat.

Other projects under this banner includescivil projects for the construction of new substations in aid of Eskom’s strategy to strengthen the Western Cape Grid. These

projects included the construction of a new 400kV substation next to the existing Ferrum Substation in the Kathu, Northern Cape; to the value of R75million. TYRIS was further awarded three additional civil projects, also in the Northern Cape for the building and construction of Lewensaar Substation, Garona Substation and Mookodi Substation with projectframework totalling R150million.

Mookodi Substation – Main Civil and Building Works in the North West, formed part of the Kimberley Strengthening Scheme that will improve the reliability and capacity of the Transmission in the Northern Cape Area. The project entailed the construction of 400kV and 132kV Yard, Buildings and all other related civil works to the value of R80Million.

More recently TYRIS completed a civil works at Aries and Nieuwehoop Substations with a project value of R 116million. The scope of works included a new terrace, buildings and all other civil related works with a prime objective to construct a new 400kV Nieuwehoop substation and equip a 400kV feeder bay at Aries substation to accommodate a new 400kV line going to Nieuwehoop substation.

• St Aidans: 186 sectional title homes in a combination of 1, 2 & 3 bed apartments with loft and sun deck options or 2/3 Bed Free standing homes

• Tribeca: 50-apartment complex situated in the elite suburb of Morningside, Johannesburg

• Tribeca 2: Following on the runaway success of Tribeca 1, another 25 luxury up-market apartments was constructed.

St Aidans Residential Development in Waterfall, Midrand; consists of 186 Studio,2 Bedroom and 3 Bedroom Sectional Titleapartments with the last phase handedover in April 2015. Due to the success ofthis project the next phase, MorganwoodResidential Development, consisting of176 Studio, 2 Bedroom, 3 Bedroom and

4 Bedroom Sectional Title apartments waslaunched. Morganwood is scheduled forcompletion in December 2016.

TYRIS has also been involved with Retirement Village construction, and have completed and successfully handed over 16 unique retirement units for Bondev Developments in Midrand Estates, that was part of the Retire@Midstream development. The design had special requirements to allow for frail care residents.

Our reputation and experience in this regard, led to successfully being awarded a project by Amdec Property Development, owners of Melrose Arch, for the construction of 47 unique retirement unit development in Broadacres, Fourways that was completed in December 2013.
