WOLFGANG AMADEuS MOZARTDon Giovanni

With “Le nozze di Figaro” in December 2012, the Tyrolean Festival Erl started its Mozart-Da Ponte cycle to illustrate what we consider important with Mozart – and that’s not just the meaning of “alla breve”. With “Don Giovanni” comes the sec-ond round of Mozart, and with it a few things that we think need clarification, starting with the opera’s version. For us the “Prague Version” – the version of the first performance, the one that was highly successful, the one for which Mozart cre-ated the perfect structure, the one where no one made special demands, the one Mozart was so pleased with – is the only authentic version. Prague also shows that Mozart has always been better understood outside Vienna. We in Erl are working on this.

“Tosca” as “hall-opera” was the Festival’s surprise success of the 2012 summer season. This year’s “Tosca”, produced for the new Festspielhaus, is a progression from last year’s ver-sion. New is not just the venue but also director Angelica Ladurner, who, with the production of her first opera, will add an important component to her field of experience that includes dramatic arts, music education and direction. Among the singers are again the celebrated couple Rossana Potenza and Bruno Ribeiro. As Tosca and Cavaradossi they will bring an added oomph to Puccini’s masterpiece that is often dismissed as facile melodrama.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHChristmas Oratorio BWV 248

Cantatas I–III

The first three cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio were written for the Christmas season of 1734. In Erl we will perform the cantatas on December 26 as curtain-raiser to the Festival’s second winter season. The first part describes the Birth of Je-sus, the second the annunciation to the shepherds, the third the adoration of the shepherds. The cantatas also ring in a just dawning tradition of Bach performances in Erl. Apart from us wanting to deliver the Christmas message, Bach is a composer close to the heart of the Tyrolean Festival Erl.

“From The New World”

With two great symphonic orchestras in the 2013/14 winter season, we are setting our sight on the future. Last winter’s focus was undeniably on the “festive mass”, with composers from Bach to Rossini and Beethoven. This winter we present the “festive concert”, which will also include the Second Vien-nese School. Anton Webern’s revolutionary op. 5 in a version for string orchestra, Ludwig van Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concert and, last but not least, Antonín Dvoráks’s 9th Symphony will test the hall’s acoustic qualities and the audience’s (sophisti-cated) ears. It took Gustav Kuhn fifteen long years to perform “The New World” in Erl. Thankfully the wait is finally over.

NEW YEAR’S CONCERT

Arias and Ensembles from Operas by WOLFGANG AMADEuS MOZART, GIOACCHINO ROSSINI,

PIETRO MASCAGNI, GIACOMO PuCCINI, GIuSEPPE VERDI and others

End-of-year-reviews on 31 December are best left to print media and TV shows. In Erl we will instead give a taste of the sheer endless repertoire possibilities of the Festspielhaus. Excerpts from Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”, and overtures and excerpts from operas by Verdi and Rossini will illustrate what’s doable here in Erl. Beautifully recomposed arias from “Don Giovanni” will propitiate the Festival’s Mozart fans. With works by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Otto Nicolai, Andreas Leisner will demonstrate that the German repertoire can be well suited for a cheerful and vibrant farewell to the Old Year.

NEW YEAR’S CONCERT

Works byJOHANN STRAuSS I & II, EDuARD STRAuSS,

FRANZ VON SuPPé and others

Although only in its second year, the New Year’s Concert in Erl is already a much-loved tradition. Suppé’s overture “Light Cavalry”, the “Danube Waltz”, and Strauß’ polka tetralogy, to which Maestro Kuhn clings with a Nibelungen fondness, are already a fixture on the program. There will also be a surprise concert that moves away from the evening’s classics.

Webern and Beethoven, representatives of the First and Second Viennese Schools, once more dominate the program. And once more it is Jasminka Stancul, Beethoven-award winner and loyal friend of the Tyrolean Festival Erl, who plays the piano. New this year is something that once was taken for granted: an a capella choir performance during a symphonic concert. Still common in the first half of the 20th century this sort of vocal intermezzo is often neglected today. With Max Reger, the Festival presents an often-forgotten composer who bridges late Romantic tonality and the Second Viennese School style. With “The Moldau”, which contains Smetana’s most famous and popular tune from his “Fatherland” cycle, the program pays homage to a great Bohemian composer.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHChristmas Oratorio BWV 248

Cantatas IV–VI

The 2013/14 winter season of the Tyrolean Festival Erl closes with the second set of cantatas from the Christmas Oratorio. Composed for performance on New Year’s Day, the first Sunday after New Year, and for Epiphany, we will give all three can-tatas on 6 January as part of a matinée. This makes Bach the Alpha and Omega of (our) musical thinking and both starting and end point of an entire festival season.

“If you have heard Franui once, their music will always be in your mind and in your soul.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

The Musicbanda Franui will turn twenty in 2013! And since the anniversary year is almost over by December, the musi-cians from Osttirol will attempt their first “hat-trick”: Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, three successful recital evenings in a less than 7-hour long marathon performance. A performance that will trigger fond memories for those who saw the Tyrolean Festival Erl’s 24-hour Ring in 2005. In many ways Erl is the ideal venue for Franui’s anniversary trilogy where the audience has always shown great love towards the musicbanda.

Actor and director Sven-Eric Bechtolf combines Franui’s un-conventional approach to 19th-century songs with literature: he will recite the lyrics to Schubert’s songs; read passages from Ödön von Horváth’s novel “36 Hours” to Brahm’s Folk Songs; and Gustav Mahler will be introduced to his soulmate Robert Walser.

ENSEMBLE RISOGNANZENew Year’s Concert of the Century

Change of Perspective on Popular Stage Seats

On New Year’s Eve, Tito Ceccherini – an internationally ac-claimed conductor who is devoted to contemporary music – will conduct his Ensemble Risognanze at the Tyrolean Festival Erl, his quasi home. He promises a “New Year’s Concert of the Century” and offers new perspectives on familiar and unknown musical phenomena. Mr. Ceccherini describes his program: “Innovations, freshness, curiosity and a dash of humor: the characteristic traits of a New Year’s Concert also describe the mindset with which we want to present a kaleidoscope of sounds and ideas in an exciting concert evening full of new music.” After last winter’s intimate and very unique Special, we are proud to dedicate the 2014 New Year’s Day to Ceccher-ini’s unusual approach to music in (our) new century. Like last year we will provide the matching, thought-provoking spatial background by putting the seats on the stage for a new and different perception of the beautiful concert hall.

Erl’s Favorite Artist Presents Schubert’s Last Work

In January 2013, Michael Kupfer and the Musicbanda Franui performed together for the first time in “The Doppelgänger Effect”. A sold-out house and standing ovations demonstrated the great interest in this unique collaboration. We are happy to accommodate the demand for (a lot) more Franui – see concert marathon on 30 December 2013 – and more Michael Kupfer – see “Winterreise” with Margarita Oganesjan on the piano.

Gustav Kuhn

Born in Salzburg, Gustav Kuhn studied conducting with Hans Swarowsky, Bruno Maderna und Herbert von Karajan at the Conservatories in Vienna and Salzburg and graduated from the Salzburg University in philosophy, psychology and psy-chopathology. Kuhn was only 24 years old when he won the prestigious international conducting competition of the Aus-trian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

From 1970 to 1977 Kuhn worked as choirmaster and con-ductor at the Istanbul Opera House, then as 1st Chapel Master at the Dortmund Opera House. During this time he already gave guest performances in Palermo, Naples and Bologna. Later he had engagements as guest director in Rome, Florence, Venice and Zurich.

Gustav Kuhn conducted the Berlin Philharmonics, the Dres-den State Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, the Orchestre National de France in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo, and, last but not least, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1974 Kuhn founded the Institute for Aleatoric Music in Salzburg; in 1977 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera with Richard Strauss’ Elektra; only a year later, in 1978, he

Page 31: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2013/14

debuted at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival; the following season Maestro Kuhn made his conducting debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and was engaged as General Music Director in Bern. In 1980 Kuhn opened the Glyndebourne Festival. More debuts followed: 1981 with Fidelio in Chicago; 1982 with Così fan tutte at the Paris Opera; 1984 with Tannhäuser at Milan’s Scala; 1986 with Un ballo in maschera at Arena di Verona.

In 1986 Gustav Kuhn started to direct and produce operas to achieve a greater artistic union between a work’s visual and musical components. Kuhn produced and staged The Fly-ing Dutchman (Triest), Parsifal and La Bohème (Naples), Don Carlos and Don Carlo (Torino), Da Ponte Trilogy (Festival di Macerata), Rossini’s Otello (Berlin, Braunschweig and Tokyo), La Bohème, Falstaff and La Traviata (Tokyo), Capriccio (Parma), among others.

After his debut as opera director with the Flying Dutch-man in Trieste (stage design and costumes: Peter Pabst), he developed the “Hall Opera” series for Suntory Hall Opera in Tokyo (1993).

Kuhn stayed with the Salzburg Festival until 1997 (1978 debut, 1980 Figaro, 1989 Un ballo in maschera; 1992, 1994 and 1997 La clemenza di Tito).

From 1983 to 1985 Kuhn served as general music director at the Bonn Opera, followed by engagements as head con-ductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and later as artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Neapel. Kuhn headed the music festival in Macerata from 1990 to 1994; from 1994 on he served as artistic director of the Filarmonica Marchigiana. Gustav Kuhn was artistic director oft he Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento from January 2003 to December 2012.

Teachings, Compositions, CDS

Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of “Neue Stimmen” (New Voices), an international singing competition by the Ger-man Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh, since 1987. In 1992

Page 32: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2013/14

32

Kuhn founded the Accademia di Montegral, headquartered at the Convento dell’Angelo in Lucca (Tuscany) since 2000. In 1997 Kuhn founded the Tyrolean Festival Erl. After working on Wagner’s Ring for several years, Kuhn took the production on tour for the first time in 2005 (Santander) and produced the now legendary 24-hour Ring. The same year Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner agreed to become president of the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The construction of the new Festspielhaus, which was opened on 26 December 2012, is largely owed to Mr. Ha-selsteiner’s efforts and commitment.

In addition to its Summer Festival, the Tyrolean Festival Erl now also hosts a Winter Festival that will run annually from 26 December through 6 January. Artistic director is Gustav Kuhn. The new winter program will focus on works from the Italian and the bel-canto repertoire as well as Mozart operas. In the summer, the Passionsspielhaus will continue to be an important performance venue for the Festival’s Wagner and Strauss productions.

With the performance of Lohengrin in July 2012, Gustav Kuhn brought his cycle of Wagner’s ten grandest operas at Erl’s Festspielhaus to a close. The summer of 2014 will see a revised production of Kuhn’s 24-hour Ring. For 2015, Mr. Kuhn plans to conduct all ten of Wagner’s major operas in only one season. Gustav Kuhn’s compositions include orchestra works, masses and solo pieces; his instrumentation of Janácek’s Diary of One Who Disappeared met with great acclaim at the Opéra National de Paris (released at Edition Peters). From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Kuhn performed a series of classical concerts titled “Delirium” in his home town of Salzburg.

Gustav Kuhn’s recording are available at col legno, BMG, EMI, CBS, Capriccio, Supraphon, Orfeo, Koch / Schwann, Co-reolan, ARTE NOVA and others. His book Aus Liebe zur Musik (Out Of Love For Music) by Henschel Verlag.

Orchestra of the Tyrolean Festival Erl

The well-balanced and rich sound of the Orchestra is owed to a highly motivated and dedicated ensemble that has developed and grown over the years. The orchestra’s members are not bought new every season and then ignored and discarded. Quite the opposite: many of the musicians have been enjoy-ing the personal support of Gustav Kuhn and his Accademia di Montegral for many years.

Founded in the summer of 1999, the Orchestra generated enthusiastic audiences and critical acclaim in its first year at the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The Orchestra is an amalgamation of the finest talents, experienced musicians from renowned international orchestras, chamber music specialists and teach-ers who share a passion for classical works and a dedication to musical perfection.

With Gustav Kuhn as spiritus rector and musical director, the orchestra has received lavish praise and great international acclaim.

The Orchestra’s repertory is extremely diverse and includes Richard Wagner’s ten dramatic operas, operas by Strauss, Mo-zart, Beethoven, Verdi and Rossini, Beethoven’s symphonies and a wide range of classical music from baroque to romantic, as well as contemporary compositions and premieres.

Page 34: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2013/14

Choir Academy of the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Founded in 2007, the Choir Academy is on par with the Fes-tival Orchestra. The Choir Academy, too, offers its members a holistic development as artists, and focuses on strengthening the individual voice within the choral setting. Thanks to its excellent training, the Choir has reached the highest level of artistic excellence necessary to perform a variety of choral works, including everything from a cappella music to operas.

Artistic director of the ensemble is Gustav Kuhn. The Choir Academy’s repertoire ranges from a cappella music to great concert and opera productions including Verdi’s Messa da Req-uiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. In 2009 the Choir Academy greatly con-tributed to the success of the Tyrolean Festival Erl with their performance in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Fidelio and Elektra. In 2010 the Choir once more fulfilled the expectations of the audience with their superb performance in The Magic Flute, The Flying Dutchman, Beethoven’s 9th, Brahm’s German Requiem and the premiere of the opera Die Hocheit (The Wed-ding) by Leitner / Schöpf. In the Festival summer of 2012 the Choir Academy received critical acclaim and audience acco-lades for their performance in the new production of Wagner’s Lohengrin, in the winter of 2012/13 with Verdi’s Nabucco.

35

Costume Design Studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Musical diversity, unconventional views and a commitment to art outside the mainstream industry have defined the produc-tions of the Tyrolean Festival Erl from the very beginning.

Gustav Kuhn’s quest to create an unmistakable signature style for the Festival led to the formation of a dedicated design studio in 2007. As head of the design studio, Lenka Radecky is responsible for both the technical and artistic aspects of costume design. Mrs. Radecky has surrounded herself with a highly qualified team of costume interpreters, tailors and as-sistants to ensure that no detail is missed.

The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl combines highest demands on quality and expertise with deep knowl-edge, highly specialized work experience, and a passion for (opera) materials. The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival

Erl is experienced in all aspects of costume design and production. All designing and sewing is done by hand and with great attention to even the minutest detail.

Accademia di Montegral

In today’s competitive free market young professionals like singers, conductors, répétiteurs, stage designers and costume designers often find themselves left out in the cold and there-fore ultimately doomed to fail. What once was the respon-sibility of theater and music directors, namely the support and professional education of young artists, today is often subject to their arbitrariness and the dictate of the entertain-ment industry. In addition, the opera is in the throes of an economic and structural crisis: high operating costs, expensive technology, grand trappings, a sluggish – and sometimes hos-tile – bureaucracy, and incompetent opera makers add to the already challenging situation. As a result there are many poorly trained and easy-to-replace young musicians, and, ultimately, a decreasing interest in opera, especially among younger peo-ple. The Accademia di Montegral sees its purpose in providing support and education as well as promoting the art form of the opera. The groundwork was laid in 1987 when conductor and director Gustav Kuhn founded the Accademia in Italy. Later, sister institutions were set up in Germany (1993) and in Japan (1994; Tokyo Suntory-Hall).

The “Convento dell’Angelo” near Lucca (Tuscany) has been the artistic center of the Accademia di Montegral since October

Page 37: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2013/14

37

2000. The way the Accademia works is that certain topics are chosen which are then discussed and debated by students and renowned experts (e.g. elocutionists, répétiteurs, conduc-tors, directors, etc.) during class. The Accademia also provides practice-oriented information on a variety of topics such as casting, fees, etc.

The Accademia offers its high-level support not only to talented young singers but also to artists from related fields such as instrumentalists, conductors, composers and direc-tors. This way it is possible for the Accademia di Montegral to produce and perform complete opera productions itself. Some of the Accademia di Montegral’s esteemed honorary members include Francisco Araiza, Albert Dohmen, Gertrud Ottenthal, Peter Pabst and Renato Bruson. Funding and support for the Accademia’s programs comes largely from sponsors and private benefactors.

Project MontegralHelp for Streetchildren in Brazil

The Accademia di Montegral is located inside the Convento dell’Angelo, a monastery of the Passionists, a Roman Catholic religious order. After hundreds of years at the Convento, which is beautifully set high above Lucca, a shortage of new priests and the dilapidated condition of the monastery forced the Pas-sionists to leave the Convento in the 1990ies and look for a new use of the building. In 2000 Gustav Kuhn’s Accademia di Montegral found its home in the Convento.

The Passionists, who live their faith through commitment to those who suffer, are dedicated to social work and fight-ing poverty worldwide. The Passionists of Brazil have several projects running in Salvador, Itabuna and Jequie to offer street children a better future and an alternative to life on the streets.

The Accademia di Montegral supports the work of the Pas-sionist Order in Brazil. Any assistance as well as donations are greatly appreciated. Please make your donation payable to: “Projekt Montegral, Hilfe für die Straßenkinder Brasiliens”

Erl and Surroundings

Erl – The Passion Play and Festival Town in Tyrol

Erl (pop. 1,450) is located in the North-Tyrolean Unterinntal Valley, on the border with Bavaria and about 15 kilometers from Kufstein. Tyrol’s northernmost and lowest town once was a Roman estate known as Praedium Aurelianum. A Mithra stone with the inscription “DIM PRO SALUTE” was found dur-ing excavations at the parish and shows that Romans settled here as early as 300 AD. The first time Erl was mentioned in an official document, the Notitia Arnonis, a list of the pos-sessions of Salzburg’s archbishopric, is 788 AD. Erl and Erl’s parish, which is dedicated to Saint Andreas the Apostle, were destroyed several times during the course of history. Under Emperor Maximilian Erl, together with Rattenberg, Kitzbuhel and Kufstein, was finally ceded to Tyrol in 1504. Erl is one of the Inntal Valley’s oldest villages.

Erl is a great winter destination for romance and serenity. Activities include leisurely walks across snow-covered fields or to a frozen waterfall, or a hike or ski tour to Erlerberg. Skiers can indulge their hobby on Hocheck in Oberaudorf/Bavaria (5 km away) and in Austria’s largest lift-linked ski area, the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental in the Kitzbüheler Alpen. The SkiWelt is a 30-minute drive from Erl. Kufstein with its famous fortress is only 15 kilometers from Erl.
