Ms. Kwenin
Mrs. Kwenin is the epitome of professionalism and takes educating students seriously. When asked of her peers how they felt about her, it was said, "The way she promotes peace and unity through her actions and leadership style is absolutely commendable!" and "She kept me on track and helped me be the teacher I am today."
Elise is the Team Leader of 5th grade and handles of rigor of her classroom responsibili-ties, as well as the day to day experiences of her team with grace and thoughtfulness. Mrs. Kwenin heads the ever popular Boys and Girls Sweetheart Dances, where students get to dress in their absolute best and party with their parents. Title I Tidbits
Welcome to 2019!
It’s so good to be back to our regular routines after our long break. Part of the fun of taking the break is that we change routines and have new and different ways to occupy our time. Maybe your child received books for gifts and you’re looking forward to reading them together. Now is the time to limit “screen” time (both games and TV) and put reading time back in your routines. We want to
share some other ways you can “talk about” books with your children.
Mrs. King (K-2 Title 1 Reading) Ms. Redmond (3-5 Title 1 Reading)
TRY THIS AT HOME!
The following are examples of questions you can use when you “talk about” the books you read with your child.
1. Tell me what you liked best about this book. Why? 2. Tell me about a favorite sentence or part of the book. 3. Tell me about a character in this story. 4. Tell me something you have in common (or something that makes you different) from some-one in the book. 5. Tell me what you would do if ....(relate to the problem in the story.) 6. Tell me how you would feel if …(relate to something in the story.) 7. Tell me about the problem and then the solution in this story. 8. Tell me about something similar that happened to you. 9. Tell me something you might change in this story if you were the author.
Check out our students dressing up for Book Character Day!

activities they love. Have your children get a flu shot at the wellness center and
stay protected all season long. Flu shots are free for students. Please

Why Kindness Matters
There is nothing as rewarding as giving back to others. Kindness is the best medicine, and being generous can change the world!!
“One act of kindness towards one human being changes the world. Because to change the world all we have to do is change one life,” says host of the Netflix series The Kindness Diaries, author, and kindness expert Leon Logothetis. In his adventures, Logothetis has discovered that generosity matters, and that by being kind you can go anywhere.
Kindness Matters because it makes You Happy Too!
When was the last time you did something kind for a stranger? It probably felt good to make someone else smile. A simple act of kind-ness can turn a bad day into a good day. Not just for the receiver, but
also the giver.
Being generous leads to a significant increase in positive moods. Hap-piness is spread through each and every one of us. By taking the time to help others, we not only give them a better day, but their satisfaction and gratitude can make ours better as well. We connect with people through kindness. “This river of kindness flows through each
and every one of us, connecting us together”

Kindness Matters because it’s Contagious!!
It’s been proven that kindness has a domino effect. When one person stops to do something kind for another, those who witnessed the act are inspired to do the same. In 2014, an act of kindness by a single woman in a Starbucks drive-thru
sparked a 378 person long chain of paying-it forward! “If you care about someone, they will feel it, and if they feel it, they will pass it on.” Acts can be as small as smil-ing at a stranger, paying for someone’s coffee or even donating to a good cause. It’s these moments that spark a chain reaction of compassion in people. Kindness is an
easy habit to pick up, but an even harder one to let go of.
Kindness Matters because it Sparks Hope!!
Giving back to those in need not only makes them feel better, but it can also give them hope. Logothetis says “The greatest thing we can do for another human be-
ing is make them feel less alone, and what better way to do that by simply being kind…” One small act of compassion can make a huge impact on someone’s life. In
his book, Logothetis opens up about how he had little hope in himself and the world before his journey. It was the kindness of others that reinstalled his faith. If Logothetis could bring hope to entire communities, imagine how much hope you
can bring to one child. It only takes one person to trigger an entire movement. Showing kindness to others is the first step to creating happier, healthier, and
more hopeful people. #actofday #kindnessiscool
University Academy Wellness Center now offers telehealth visits. The telehealth visit allows you to see and talk to your child and the nurse
practitioner via the Zoom App. This App is similar to skype but privacy protected. That means you can stay at work or home but still see your
child and talk to the nurse practitioner about your child’s health face to face via a computer screen

Chess Club
The University Academy Chess Club invites all Lower School students grades K-5 to learn and
play our royal game. If your child would like to either learn Chess or refine their skill, we wel-come them to our club. The goal of each club meeting is to have fun while learning Chess.

The Kansas City Chess Club chess curriculum will guide students from Pawn to King level ad-
vancement. Students will be given three work-books to complete during each scholastic year. Progress will be measured by a chess skills test
taken at the end of each level. Students may par-ticipate as a team against other schools at local
chess tournaments.
A typical chess club session will consist of several of the following: a chess lesson, challenge games, workbook exercises, tournament prepara-
tion and fun play.
Certified chess instructors from The Kansas City Chess Club will be teaching players about
important rules, chess etiquette, strategy, open-ings, endgames, and tactics. Research says chess
improves test scores on Math and Reading.
