Derek Atchley with Atchley Designs and Donna Vorce with First Impressions present “Your Exhibit is Your Brand”at Ask the Expert event at TechColumbus on Wednesday, June 13.

Ask the Experts: “Your Exhibit is Your Brand”

What are financial andhealthcare Powers of At-torney, and a Living Will, and do I really need anyof them?

These are legal documents that arerelatively easy and inexpensive to pre-pare, and, yes, most people want, need, and will benefit from them.

A financial Power of Attorney is alegal document you sign in which youappoint someone, usually a spouse orchild, to handle your finances if youare ever temporarily or permanentlyunable to handle them yourself. Typi-cally this would be in the event of acatastrophic debilitating medical eventsuch as a stroke which leaves you tem-porarily unable to sign your checks, but could also be in the event of acatastrophic event which leaves youunconscious or comatose. This Powerof Attorney would allow your appoint-ed person to then sign your checks topay your bills if you are unable. And,since you decide what terms to includein the Power of Attorney, you decidejust how much authority to give thisperson to handle your finances if youare unable.

A healthcare Power of Attorneyis also a legal document you sign inwhich you appoint someone, againusually a spouse or child, to make yourhealthcare decisions for you if you areever temporarily or permanently un-able to make those decisions yourself.Again, this would typically be in theevent of a catastrophic debilitating

medical event such as a stroke whichleaves you temporarily unable to makeinformed decisions about your health-care, but could also be in the event youare rendered unconscious or comatose. This Power of Attorney would allowyour appointed person to discuss yourmedical condition with healthcareproviders, make decisions regardingyour healthcare, and consent to yourmedical treatment. Again, since youdecide what terms to include in thisPower of Attorney, you decide justhow much authority to give this per-son to make your healthcare decisionsif you are unable.

A Living Will is also a legal docu-ment you sign, but in it you specificallyinstruct your medical providers andfamily members what type of medicalcare you want to receive if you are everunable to express your wishes. Thiswould also be in the event you are ren-dered permanently unconscious andin a terminal medical condition. Mostpeople direct in their Living Will thatif they are ever in this condition thatthey want only that level of care nec-essary to keep them comfortable andpain free, and not any heroic shortterm treatment.

YOUR DREAMIS OUT THERE.

GO GET IT.WE’LL PROTECT IT.

For the past five years, Schmidt’sRestaurant and Sausage House hasbeen a mainstay of the Taste of UpperArlington. Attendees of the 19th An-nual Taste of UA will once again getto feast on Schmidt’s legendary de-lectables such as their Bratwursts, Ba-hama Mama’s and those divine JumboCream Puffs.

Owner Andy Schmidt says that “theSchmidt family grew up in UA onBrandon Road and participating in theTaste is like a coming home party forthe fourth-generation family members

who work at the [booth]. Having hada restaurant on Henderson Road back

in the 90’s, we still have lots of fansthat know Schmidt’s and visit us downin German Village so our lines at theTaste are normally, extremely long.”

“The Schmidt’s Cream Puff wonbest dessert last year [in the Taste ofUA food contest]. It’s incredible howreceptive the judges where when weoffered them all our Puff for a YearGift Certificates,” Schmidt joked.

“Schmidt’s is looking forward to agreat Taste again in 2012!” And so isthe Chamber.

As you know, interest rates are nearrecord lows and that hurts savers whowere used to receiving relatively highand mostly risk-free income on theirsavings. For example, back in 2007,10-year Treasuries yielded about 5percent, according to the U.S. Depart-ment of the Treasury. Last week, theyield was down to about 1.6 percent.Since bond prices move inversely toyield, this means as yields moved tonear record lows, bond prices movedto near record highs. And, now, someanalysts are asking if bond prices havereached bubble territory, according toBloomberg.

One of the most recent clear-cutcases of a bubble was the technologyboom of the late 1990s. Unfortunately, that was followed by the technologystock bust of the early 2000s. You mayrecall that bubble was based on greedas investors clamored to get in on theinternet frenzy and make some “easy”money.

But, today’s peak in the bond mar-ket is just the opposite. It’s based onfear, not greed. Due to economic un-certainty, investors have jumped intobonds to preserve their money andthis fear-based demand for bonds haspushed prices up and yields down, ac-cording to Bloomberg.

So, can a bubble be based on fearor are bubbles just reserved for greed-driven extremes? In reality, we’re notas concerned about the definition ofthe bubble as we are about the possibleunwinding of the bubble.

The technology bubble of the late1990s and the strong bond market oftoday are great examples of two thingsthat can drive markets to extremes –greed and fear. In the end, whetherdriven by greed or fear, extreme move-

ments in the financial market tend toeventually reverse themselves and re-vert back to the mean. Our job as yourfinancial advisor is to acknowledgethese emotions, but not get caughtup in them. We do our best to remainrationale and analytical in the face of

greed and fear so we can do the bestjob possible in helping you plan foryour financial future.

It’s a very helpful way, at no cost tomembers, to obtain information thatcould help members get their busi-nesses established and running whichis just a vitally important thing dur-ing the first few months of gettingtheir business going. The Chamber’sprogram serves as a place that busi-ness starts up can turn to guide themthrough the difficult start-up process.”
