UA Fire Division offers winter emergencypreparedness tips

The Older Adult ResourceGroup (OARG), a committee ofthe UAACC, is dedicated to pro-moting a dignified, healthful qual-ity of life for older adults by ad-vocating for vital services, offer-ing lifelong learning activities andbeing an accessible and trustedcommunity resource for seniorsin the Upper Arlington area.

OARG will host a spring sym-posium on April 19, 2012, withthe theme, “Be Prepared,Your Fu-ture is Now.”

The goal of the symposium isto help older adults prepare for avariety of life events and situa-tions. As the holidays approachand the weather gets colder andmore unpredictable, OARG part-nered with the Upper ArlingtonFire Division to develop somehelpful tips for being prepared fora winter emergency.

A winter storm can leave hun-dreds, possibly thousands, of peo-ple stranded, straining food, waterand shelter resources for all emer-gency response and support agen-cies. Upper Arlington older adultscan help in these situations by be-coming more self-sufficient shouldthey become isolated at home.

When considering how to pre-pare for emergencies, think aboutthe people in your neighborhoodand how you can work together. The first people to assist in anemergency are often your neigh-bors and friends.

Planning for water To prepare the safest and most

reliable emergency supply ofwater, it is recommended you pur-chase a 3-10 day supply of com-mercially bottled water per per-

From a member’s perspective— Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third Bank prides itselfon being a good corporate citizenin the communities it serv es.Known as a diversified financialservices company headquarteredin Cincinnati, Fifth Third has threelocations in Upper Arlington —on Fishinger Road, HendersonRoad and Northwest Boulevard.

Fifth Third has been a memberof the chamber since the cham-ber’s inception in 1977,and ClarkPore, vice president and districtmanager at the Fifth Third Fish-inger Road branch, is just as com-mitted to the chamber in 2012.Fifth Third is a lead sponsor of thechamber’s 2012 Taste of UA event.

Pore views Fifth Third’s cham-ber membership as invaluable be-cause of the visibility and net-working opportunities the cham-ber delivers to its members. FifthThird is focused on building re-lationships with its clients and in-teracting within the community, and one way to do that is to net-work with chamber members atvarious events offered by the

UA Fire Division offers winteremergency preparedness tips

son. Keep bottled water in its orig-inal container and do not open ituntil you need to use it. Be sureto notice the expiration or “useby” date.

• A normally active personneeds to drink at least two quartsof water each day.

• Store at least one gallon perperson per day, for drinking andcooking.

• Recycle self-stored water everysix months.

• Recycle commercially bottledwater every 12 months.

Tip: In an emergency, your hotwater heater can be a source ofwater. Turn off the power that heatsthe tank and let it cool. When youwant water, place a container un-derneath and open the drain valveon the bottom of the tank. Sedi-ment can be removed by strain-ing the water through a coffee fil-ter or clean cloth.

Pools, spas, waterbeds and sim-ilar sources of water can be usedfor cleaning and bathing, but donot drink the water from thesesources.

Planning for food Maintain a 3-10 day supply per

person of foods that require no re-frigeration and can be preparedwith little or no water. Select fooditems that are compact and light-weight such as:

• Ready-to-eat canned meats,fruits and vegetables.

• Canned juices, milk, soup (ifpowdered, store extra water).

• Sugar, salt, pepper, other sta-ples.

• High-energy foods such aspeanut butter, jelly, crackers, gra-nola bars, and trail mix.

• Food for persons on specialdiets.

• Small amounts of comfort/stress foods such as cookies, hardcandy, sweetened cereals, lol-lipops, instant coffee, tea bags.

Tip: Keep a manual can open-er, all-purpose knife, plastic wrap,

and re-sealable plastic bags on-hand to help with preparation andstorage of food.

Planning for shelterDuring a wintertime emer-

gency, you may be stuck in yourhome. Make sure everyone canunlock all locks and open all win-dows and doors quickly. Knowhow you’re going to escape thehouse if you have a fire. Makesure there are smoke detectors inthe house and that they are work-ing.

Avoid using a generator or othergasoline, propane, natural gas orcharcoal-burning devices insidea home or garage. Avoid use ofcandles or open flames of anysort. Besides food and water, it isrecommended you keep the fol-lowing on hand:

• A battery-powered or hand-crank AM/FM radio.

• Flashlights and batteries.• An emergency-weather alert

radio and a backup battery.• Rock salt or other product to

melt ice on walkways.• Sand to improve traction.• Snow shovels and other snow

removal equipment.• Sufficient heating fuel for oil-

fired furnaces.• A good supply of dry, sea-

soned wood for fireplaces orwood-burning stoves.

• Warm clothing, blanketsand/or sleeping bags.

• Extra medications.• Portable toilet, toilet paper

and plastic bags for human waste.• Wet wipes.• Pet care items, such as med-

ications, cat litter, and food andwater.

Tip: If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable hold-ers and place them where theycannot be easily knocked down.

For additional winter emer-gency preparation advice, pleasecontact the Upper Arlington FireDivision at (614) 583-5100, orvia email at [email protected].
