The Stouch Tavern has stood the test of time in Western Berks County. Located on High Street in Womelsdorf, PA, this 18th Century Tavern and Inn has hosted large amounts of people. The guests have been coming since the Tavern was first opened in 1785 by Conrad Stouch. Even the first President of the United States, George Washington, stayed there while inspecting the progress of the Union Canal. His stay was brief, as are most of the visitors to this establishment, however, there are a select few who have opted to stick around and entertain a few unsuspecting guests. Guests and employees have regaled innkeepers over the last few decades about strange occurrences they experienced while dining or working. There are the normal phenomenon’s, such as lights turning on or off, lights flickering, seeing shadows, hearing footsteps or the feeling of being watched. However, there are also stories that leave you with goose bumps and a slight sense of urgency to wrap up your visit quickly. The more intense stories involve moving objects, seeing people in colonial dress, seeing a horse drawn carriage, seeing a floating orb, and even a man dressed in civil war clothes. The latest sighting occurred just a few short months ago. A woman and her husband came in for dinner and had never been there before. Something called her to visit the Stouch for dinner. As she began to eat, she stopped suddenly. When approached about her abrupt stop, she calmly answered that she could see that a man was standing next to her table. After hearing her very detailed description of the portly man with suspenders, white hair and penny loafers, it became crystal clear that she was having dinner with the previous tavern keeper. Though these occurrences are much rarer, they do happen.

As the Stouch Tavern gets ready to celebrate its 232nd year in operation, it would be amiss not to mention that it has been over 40 years since the tavern was tediously restored to its glory days after a fire in 1973 left it virtually uninhabitable. Most of the visitors annually visit from the Berks, Lancaster, and Lebanon areas. There are also those who travel from across the country and the Atlantic to soak-in the deep historical roots at the Stouch Tavern. Then, there are those who come to visit in hopes of having an uninvited guest join them for dinner. The Tavern is now accepting reservations, for Thanksgiving Buffet, Christmas Eve Brunch Buffet, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day 2018 and all social gatherings for the 2017 holiday season. The Tavern will be decorated for Christmas from December 1 through January 31. Christmas parties may be scheduled on select dates throughout December and January in one of 5 decorated rooms. Private dates (Tuesdays and Sunday evenings) are also available. Seating hours are available Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 11:30am-2:00pm and 5:00pm-8:00pm; Saturday: 5:00pm – 8:30pm; Sunday 11:30am-1:30pm; Tuesday Closed. Five years ago, Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques opened in the village of Bethel, Pennsylvania. Named after, owner Diane Gibble’s granddaughter, Miss Morgan’s is thriving in the small community located at Exit 13 off Interstate 78, and Route 501N. Miss Morgan’s also features a new second floor market, named for the most recent addition to her family, granddaughter Sadie. Miss Morgan’s specializes in antiques for the home, including attic surface, primitives, country, urban farmhouse, industrial, upcycled, and repurposed décor. A great variety of special gifts for you and your loved ones can also be found including handcrafted candles, soaps, jewelry and purses, along with urban and vintage clothing, cowboys & lace, children’s items and much more. Explore the outdoor porch and gardens for many antique tattered garden goods as well as repurposed birdhouses and metal art. The store is a family affair. Husband Troy Tranquillo is co-owner and the “muscle” behind the business, while Gibble runs the day to day operations. Laurie Morgan, Gibble’s sister, is one of the many artisan vendors located in Sister Sadie’s Second Floor Market. And … Miss Morgan and Sister Sadie have been known to make an appearance now and then. It’s like a reunion at times, meeting friends and family at the shop, as it is a favorite for many locals. Customers like to spend hours exploring all the great finds, and having a friendly chat with owner Diane, and other shoppers. Gibble’s expert decorating skills make it easy for customers to envision pieces in their own homes. Many of the customers bring in their pictures to show layouts of their homes, inside and out, to find and purchase the right piece needed to finish their look. Keeping a steady pace of antique furnishings, with a high turnover, and lots of merchandise in stock and on display, has created a solid reputation in the community. A long time hobby, Gibble and Tranquillo look forward to traveling the East Coast, visiting flea markets, auctions, house calls, etc., to haul home those special finds for the shop. Because of their vision and goal, they both take great care in picking authentic pieces, at the best price, to deliver the best product and prices back to their customers. The strategy has worked well for the couple, building a business and customer loyalty – loyalty Diane & Troy acknowledge the first Saturday of each October at their Annual Witches of Bethel Customer Appreciation Antique & Artisan Tent Show. This year’s 5th year event is Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 8am to 4pm, and will feature several huge tents filled with over 85 antique and artisan vendors from the all over the United States as well as their buildings bursting over with lots of goodies! The Shop is ecstatic to host two Special Honorary Guests who will be joining the group this year for Meet, Greet & Book Signings.
