With the national elections over, I appreciate everything that everyone did to help our endorsed candidates get elected. With the change in the White House and our Representatives in Washington, DC realizing the importance of the U.S. automotive industry to the U.S. economy, I feel confident they will do the right thing to ensure the U.S. automotive industry survives. These are difficult and uneasy times for many Americans. Although we face more down time at the moment, we are still better off than those without union representation. We as UAW members have always made our respective communities better places to live. I encourage all Local 862 members to continue being ‘good neighbors’ by volunteering time and donating monies as much as possible to those in need. I want to welcome our new members to Local 862. These are the

employees of Premier Manufacturing Support Services who are now doing the custodial services in the Louisville Assembly Plant and the Kentucky Truck Plant. They are covered by their own contract between Premier and the UAW. Local 862’s Chaplaincy Committees hosted their 5th Annual Fellowship Dinner on November 8, 2008. There were musical performances by special guests and chaplaincy members. The keynote speaker was Pastor Joel Carwile from Valley View Church. He stressed the importance of caring for our fellow workers, friends, neighbors, families, and others during these difficult times. I thank the Chaplaincy Committees for the great job they did with the dinner. Thanks to the continuing donations of aluminum cans in our collection cages at each union hall, we are sponsoring another “Make-A-Wish” child. Something so environmentally friendly can make such an impact in the life of a sick child. Keep those cans coming! The final figures for this year’s JDRF donation is absolutely amazing! The total donation was $261,842. That is almost $47,000 over the goal set for this year. Once again, between the two plants, through our raffles, golf scrambles, venders, and 50/50 drawings all of you helped surpass the goal! You have once again opened your hearts and wallets to help those that are less fortunate. Thank you! As we go into the holidays in November and December, and have our down weeks, stay focused on the future. Come back ready to continue producing the best quality vehicles possible. I hope that the New Year brings us all a brighter future. Work safely, “lock-out”, and buy UAW/Ford products. Attend your monthly union and CAP meetings. I can be reached at the Chamberlain Lane Union Hall at 241-9491 or pager 621-7773.

President’s Report

Although we face more down time at the moment, we are still better off than those without union representation.

Brothers and Sisters,

I want to take this opportunity to welcome Joe Bobnar to the Kentucky Truck plant. Joe will be taking the Plant Manager’s position replacing Todd Bryant. Joe was previously the Plant Manager at Louisville Assembly. I look forward to working with Joe to insure the stable future of Kentucky Truck.

It appears that Kentucky Truck will be down for the retooling required to run the Expedition and Navigator. The dates are tentatively December 15, 2008 through February 2, 2009. The company will put out an official schedule in advance to verify the dates. Information regarding the payment of unemployment or sub pay benefits for that time will also be communicated.

The Bargaining Committee and I visited Michigan Truck the week of November 10, 2008, to meet their bargaining unit and review operations of the Expedition and Navigator. The posting for two hundred and seventy-five non skilled openings closed on November 12, 2008, at the close of business. At the time of writing this I do not have an exact number of those from Michigan that signed to transfer to Kentucky Truck. Any of these employees, and we anticipate the number to be well below two hundred and seventy-five; will start to arrive sometime in the middle of January 2009.

The Christmas Bonus will be paid out on December 5, 2008. Eligibility will be as follows: • $600 for 26 weeks or more worked• $400 for more than 20 but less than 26 weeks worked• $300 for more than 13 weeks but less than 20 weeks worked

The Marketing and Sales Department informed the plant on November 6, 2008 that the five weeks of December 1, 2008 through the week of January 5, 2009 (the weeks of December 1st, 8th, 15th 22nd, and January 5th) are scheduled production down weeks.

Some Skilled Trades members will be working in the plant during this time while others (millwrights and electricians) are being surveyed for work at the Kentucky Truck Plant. KTP is retooling for the production of the Expedition and the Navigator.

During the down time, I will still be posting information on our website, uawlap.org. We are continuously adding features to keep up with the changing times. Recently, we added a form for reporting unemployment issues that can be sent directly to Herb Hibbs and Labor Relations for a quick resolution. We are in the process of adding more retiree features, also. So, periodically log on and check it out.

On Wednesday October 22, 2008, the Bargaining Committee had the opportunity to sit down with Joe Bobnar, new Plant Manager Mark Boldin, and William Russo, Director, Manufacturing-Vehicle Operations, Ford Motor Company to discuss the state of the company and the Louisville Assembly Plant. While the national economy has taken a dramatic downturn over the last year and the financial mess we are in, Ford Motor Company is becoming a better company.

Our quality level is equal with Honda and Toyota (http://uawlap.org/quality/ford-reliability-gains-on-honda-toyota.php). With the cash crunch on the auto industry, Ford is becoming a leaner company. Hopefully the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program passed Congress and signed into law September 30th, will “significantly reduce our costs of capital for the U.S. production of advanced technology vehicles, and will help us and our suppliers retool our plants to produce the next generation of fuel

APRI Rides to the

Polls Nov. 4, 2008

The A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) has once again sponsored rides to the polls for voters who otherwise would be unable to get there on their own. The APRI worked in coalition with the NAACP, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), and Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU).

With over 100 drivers volunteering, 49 of which were UAW, more than 1000 voters were taken to the polls. Region 3 Director Mo Davidson and Assistant Director Mark Farrell also were on hand to drive voters to the polls.

APRI would like to thank all volunteers from local union, churches, and the community in making this day a huge success. A special thanks to UAW CAP Region 3 & 4 for donating the meals.

I want to remind everyone to make sure that they build a quality unit in station. We need to get into the mindset that the next operator down the line is our customer and deserves the best truck that we can build.

As this year comes to end I want to thank everyone in the membership for all the support that you have shown to me and the committee. No one has been immune to the tough times and struggles that this plant has faced this year. Your ability to continue to produce the best built truck in the world while enduring countless sacrifices such as numerous operating patterns and a massive number of down weeks have reaffirmed this membership as the best in the world. I am confident that the New Year will bring better times.

How the loans are going to be distributed hasn’t been decided yet, but Ford’s idea, basing the distribution on retooling projects in North America and not just on size of the company, would help us in our retooling.

Demand of the Explorer and Sport Trac is being strengthened by the lower gas prices and by increases in exports next year. Hopefully that will translate into less downtime next year and could have building the Explorer past mid 2010 and shorten the downtime period before the launch of our new C platform products in 2011. Mr. Russo has great expectations for our Plant in the future because of what this membership has done and continues to deliver to help get the company though this economic downturn.

See Who Gives

Ford & GMauthor unknown

An interesting commentary

You might find this of interest:

CNN Headline News did a short news listing regarding Ford and GM’s contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington. The findings are as follows.....

1. Ford- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excursions to NY Fire Dept. The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees.

2. GM- $1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, suv’s, and trucks.

3. Daimler Chrysler- $10 million to support the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack.

4. Harley Davidson motor cycles- $1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept.

5. Volkswagen-Employees and management created a Sept 11 Foundation, funded initially with $2 million, for the assistance of the children and victims of the WTC.

6. Hyundai- $300,000 to the American Red Cross.

7. Audi-Nothing.

8. BMW-Nothing.

9. Daewoo- Nothing.

10. Fiat-Nothing.

11. Honda- Nothing despite boasting of second best sales month ever in August 2001

12. I suzu- Nothing.

13. Mitsubishi-Nothing.

14. Nissan-Nothing.

15. Porsche-Nothing. Press release with condolences via the Porsche website.

16. Subaru- Nothing.

17. Suzuki- Nothing.

18. Toyota-Nothing despite claims of high sales in July and August 2001. Condolences posted on the website. Whenever the time may be for you to purchase or lease a new vehicle, keep this information in mind. You might want to give more consideration to a car manufactured by an American-owned and/or American based company. Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States .

It’s OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but it is apparently not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis. I believe we should not forget things like this. Say thank you in a way that gets their attention.

11November - December

Our Fifth Annual UAW Local 862 Chaplaincy Fellowship Dinner was held this past November 8th at the Ron Gettelfinger Hall and has grown to 285 guests. Our theme this year was “Love Changes All.”

Our special speaker was Pastor/Chaplain, Joel Carwile, who delivered a powerful message! Before his ministry as a pastor began he was employed by Steel Case Workers, Inc. for seven years. He served as their in-house, unofficial chaplain until he left to become a pastor of the First Union Baptist Church in Athens, Alabama. He also served as Chief of Chaplains of the State Guard Association. In June 2007 he became the Pastor of Valley View Baptist Church here in Louisville, Kentucky.

Joel shared with us some insightful ideals in how to serve and shared several personal experiences he has had as a chaplain in the workplace and on the field. He demonstrated a dynamic example, of when one is tired of physically ‘holding up your arms’ in the air (as in your family, others, yourself and the list could go on and on) through everyday life’s challenges, that when one begins to get weary and ‘the arms’ begin to fall, that’s when one must step up for or we must call out to our sisters and brothers and have them stand beside us, one on each side, each holding up an ‘arm’ in the air for you. Wow it was great!

Our Chaplaincy Committee’s Mission Statement is ‘Caring in the Workplace.’ In our daily efforts and visitations we give hope, extend acceptance and love to all and make every effort to meet our fellow members and sometimes their families’ needs in a variety of and in diverse ways by being good listeners and care givers, assisting, accepting, and meeting needs in the workplace, homes, hospitals and in funeral homes exemplifying confidentiality and with the utmost integrity.

As always, we open and close corporately with prayer, ask for a blessing of the food, say the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and sing “Solidarity Forever” by Ralph Chaplin. The meal was catered by Kim Atkinson, James’ wife. We closed the evening by giving thanks and appreciation to our many supporters, thanked our guests & hoped that their evening was filled with an awesome time of praise & worship, enjoyable food and fellowship & spiritual nourishment. Thank You & God Bless!Contributors and Supporters: We cannot thank the Executive Board enough for their continuous support!Farley Printing, Town & Country Ford, Chaplaincy Committee Members, Terri Lewellen, The On-line Staff, Mo Davison, Mike Abel, Various Region 3 Locals, David Easton, Roy Puckett, Suellen Warner, Amy Brister, Local 862 Women’s Committees

delegates about the “Trials and Tribulations for Women Past” and the hardships endured by women in the workplace.

Three workshops were offered covering a variety of topics: Abusive Relationships by Tricia Harris of Local 977 (which struck a chord with the delegates), Labor Law with Valerie Hodges of Local 933, and

American/Union Made spoke on by Kim Ashby of Local 862.

A panel discussion on the final day of the conference answered questions that covered topics of interest for all union members and their

families. The panelists included: Professor Mark Couch., Indiana University Labor Department, who covered the Family Medical Leave Act; Attorney Pat Proctor

answered questions concerning Labor Laws; Phillip Moore covered questions concerning Equal Employment Opportunity. Wrapping up the conference the Region 3 Women’s Planning Committee performed a skit about the tragic 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. As a result of that fire, health and safety standards became the norm rather than the

exception. Finally, UAW Local 862 Women’s Committee wishes

to express their gratitude to the Executive Board and the membership for allowing the Chair’s to participate in the planning process for the conference and allowing members from the committee to attend the 2008 UAW Region 3 Women’s Conference.

The 2008 UAW Region 3 Women’s Conference was held November 1-2 at UAW Local 2209, in Fort Wayne, IN. The theme “Women-Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow”

encompassed issues affecting women past, present and in the future. The conference was put together by the UAW Region 3 Women’s Planning Committee, consisting of 11 women from different locals around Region 3 under the leadership of Region 3 Education Representative Shelia Radloff. Special thanks should go to Local 2209’s own Carol Schultz, Chair of the Women’s Committee and its members for working tirelessly to make the conference a success.

Region 3 Director Mo Davison was on hand to give a stirring speech right before introducing the keynote speaker UAW International Union President Ron Gettelfinger. Gettelfinger reminded delegates of the importance of the Nov. 4th election and expressed his gratitude about the tireless efforts put forth by union members in helping to get labor friendly representatives elected. “Many months of hard work, dedication and the simple belief among UAW members that workers can help bring about the change this country needs is just around the corner,” UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said. Gettelfinger had the delegates on their

feet clapping and shouting agreement.

Other guest speakers included Theresa Bullock of the UAW Women’s Department who spoke on women and their issues in the political process. Julietta Clardy, Vice–Chair

of Region 3 Retiree Chapter Area 11, who informed the

Election 2008 Kids Vote !

November 4, 2008 volunteers from Local 862 manned two polling stations, one at each hall, that allowed kids to participate in the historic election. Kids Voting USA’s mission is to help young people become educated, engaged voters. And, education starts in the classroom with a unique civic learning experience and is carried over into real life experiences.

Kids Voting Metro Louisville has decided to change the look of its ballots for the 2008 election. The hope behind the redesign is to make the ballots more kid-friendly, providing images of the candidates to go along with the names and parties.

They also added “Kids Voting Issues” questions, which is a fun way for kids to voice their opinions on real (but fun!) issues affecting them and their community.

Students who participate in Kids Voting USA activities learn how to gather information, think critically and make decisions. They also learn important collaboration skills as well as respect for differing points of view – skills useful not only for civic participation but also for life. Those wishing to view the results of the election can do so at www.kidsvotinglouisville.org

At a very young age, Mary Leslie knew that she wanted to become a school teacher. She understands that children learn in different ways, so when you walk into her classroom be ready to see, hear, touch and smell just about everything. According to Mary, “If students can make it, move it, touch it, see it, draw it, eat it, or act it out; they can learn it!” Mary holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University. She earned a master’s degree in reading at the University of Louisville and she is currently working towards a second master’s degree in teaching. A third grade teacher at Roosevelt –Perry Elementary, Ms. Leslie is the most recent recipient of the WHAS-TV ExCEL Award. The ExCel Award is sponsored by The Jefferson Public Schools, WHAS-TV and E.ON U.S. As an ExCEL Award winner, Ms. Leslie will receive a $1,000 instructional grant from the sponsors. The property we were assigned to was the Charles Turner residence on Murphy lane.

Timing couldn't have been any better. Mr. Turner was moving his father into his house

that day, and during a discussion with the elder Mr. Turner, it was discovered that he was

a retiree of the UAW (GM) out of Detroit and elated to learn that the people sent to clean

his son's property were from his Union. I also want to send a special thank you to Laura

ladies! We received over 900 calls for assistance from the frail, elderly, and disabled in

our community, and are still in need of volunteers. We're asking for teams of4 but we

won't turn anyone away. So if your can spare about 4 hours of your time please call 2-1-1

Turner, it was discovered that he was a retiree of the UAW (GM) out of De-

troit and elated to learn that the people sent to clean his son’s property were

from his Union. I also want to send a special thank you to Laura and Tricia

for their continued efforts in the Wind Warrior clean up program. GOOD JOB

ladies! We received over 900 calls for assistance from the frail, elderly, and

the disabled in our community, and are still in need of volunteers. We’re ask-

ing for teams of 4 but we won’t turn anyone away. So if you can spare about

4 hours of your time please call 2-1-1 and tell them you would like to volun-

teer as a WIND WARRIOR.
