Letter From The UBC Team

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the fifth annual Undergraduate Business Conference! Each year, we

focus on a topic that is relevant to todays business-oriented students and create a

forum to facilitate education and discussion. We invite leading businesspeople,

create panels on theme sub-topics, and give our attendees something completely

unique: a forum designed by undergraduates, for undergraduates, at no cost.

This year, our theme, the social aspects of business and power of community, seeksto focus on emerging sector of the economies that we live in. New ways to connect

with people, demographics, and organizations have rapidly emergedover the past

several years. As this has happened, companies have evolved to leverage thesedeveloping platforms. This has created a new group of individuals who are working

to innovate and alter business in order to better serve the communities in which welive. Today is about the positive potential of these businesses to not only be

profitable, but also transform the world as we know it.

We would like to thank our Keynote Speakers, Andrew Mason and Paul Finnegan,

for taking the time to share their experiences with us today. They have

demonstrated an amazing ability to build strong businesses while also focusing onthe social responsibility that comes with these positions. We are also grateful to the

Business Institutions Program (BIP) and the Lehman Grant, given in memory of

Sherman R. Lewis Jr. WCAS '58, whose generosity and support have helped make

todays conference possible.

This conference thrives on the hard work of students in ISBE, and their dedication is

very much appreciated.

Sincerely,

The Undergraduate Business Conference Team

became a software developer by no ambition of his own, but via a

series of acquaintances offering to give him money to doincrementally harder stuff on computers. Excited by the power of

technology to change the world, Andrew developed Policy Tree, a

policy debate visualization tool, and won a scholarship to attend

the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy in 2006. In

receiving an unexpected offer to fund the idea that would become

 About ISBE

The Institute for Student Business Education (ISBE) was originally founded in 1996

as The Nugget Group, an investment and business club at Northwestern University.

Its founding members established a five-figure private investment company, taking

advantage of the groups extensive financial research. The Nugget Group was

featured twice on CNN, highlighting the success of the portfolios performance. The

Nugget Group has continued to expand as is now a multi-tiered financial education

platform called the Financial Services Group (FSG).

The Nugget Group was formally reorganized as the Institute for Student BusinessEducation (ISBE) in 2006. ISBE has continued to develop the founders visions to

provide accessible and experiential business education for undergraduate students

nationwide.

In April 2006, the group launched the Northwester Business Review (NBR), a

national undergraduate business magazine. Working to bridge commerce with

college life, NBR initially targeted circulation to 50 top-tier universities. Within one

year, NBR doubled its circulation and began accepting content from campus

partners. At the same time, ISBE developed Minorities in Business (MIB). Since its

founding, MIB has increased minority involvement in ISBE by 400%

as well ascreated a series of events featuring prominent minority business leaders.

ISBE has continued to grow and now is divided into five product groups, NBR, MIB,

FSG, as well as ISBE Analytics and Northwestern Undergraduate Sports BusinessResearch. Additionally, we are supported by our internal functional groups that are

comprised of Human Capital, Corporate Relations and Marketing. Together these

groups work to expand the business opportunities of undergraduate students at

Northwestern.

Using the current student groups as a foundation, ISBE hopes to further expand its

offerings in the upcoming years.
