Quinta do Casal Branco, Almeirim, Tejo
Jose Lobo de Vasconcelos runs the Quinta do Casal Branco, which lies a little to the north of Lisbon on the east bank of the Tagus, in the heart of the Tejo region. This is a large mixed farm, typical of the area and around 600 hectares in size. The land is used for growing tomatoes, melons, wheat, maize; breeding Lusitano horses and cattle, and not least, growing grapes and making wine. 140 Hectares are laid to vine, mainly Castelao and Trincadeira for the reds, and Fernao Pires & Sauvignon for the whites . Several more hectares have recently come to fruit, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Sauvignon and Alicante Bouchet. Traditional winemaking techniques are still used today such as foot stepping, combined with modern winemaking technology. In common with most Tejo wines, Casal Branco produces excellent, fruit driven red and white wines, which are both full of flavour, yet smooth and easy to drink - a highly commercial combination. Prices are very sensible. All wines are estate bottled For full information go to www.casalbranco.com

Quinta de Santo Antonio do Serrado, Dao
Barao de Nelas reserva Touriga Nacional & Aragones 2007
The wine shows both the red & black berry aromas characteristic of Touriga Nacional and the more fruity and young aromas of Aragonês. Sweet jam notes are enhanced by its maturation in wood, creating a more full-bodied wine with balanced tannins. Harmonious on the palate with a long lingering aftertaste. £38.50 / doz
Barao de Nelas reserve, Alfrocheiro 2007
Produced in much the same way as the Touriga / Aragones blend, this wine demonstrates the great potential of the Alfrocheiro grape variety. The small and concentrated fruit gives it a mature and sweet intense fruit aroma. It is subtler and less obviously rich than the Touriga blend, and appeals to those who appreciate delicacy in their wines £38.50 / doz
Production The malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels then aged in American oak barrels for one year. The wine is then returned to stainless steel vessels for a further three months and then bottled and allowed to mature in a cellar for a further six months. Lightly filtered prior to bottling. This is old fashioned Dao, and proud of it!

Almeida Garrett, Tortosendo, Beiras
Jose Almeida Garrett runs this family business which lies at the foot of the Serra de Estrela mountain range (the mountains of the stars). This area is the fruit basket of Portugal, growing figs, oranges, lemons, apples, pears and of course, grapes. Quinta de Foz de Arouce, Beiras Is a famous estate lying near Lousa, between the Bairrada and the Dao regions The Quinta de Foz de Arouce can look back on a centuries-old winegrowing tradition begun by the King of Arouce in Arouce castle, which is currently the home of the fourth Earl of Arouce, Joáo Filipe Osório. He owns 15 hectares of vineyard (12 planted with red varieties, 3 with white) on slatey soils. The vines are around 35 years old. His son-in law is Portuguese oenologist Joao Portugal Ramos and since the beginning the red has been one of Portugal's finest. Although the estate is to the south of Bairrada, outside the recognised growing area, the Vinha Velhas (old vines) wine is made 100 per cent from
Baga, the tannic and acidulous main Bairrada variety. The de-stemmed grapes are fermented together with the skins for 14 days and the wine is subsequently matured for 18 months in 250-litre casks made of Portuguese oak, half of which are new. Annual production is around 10,000 bottles of red and 1,500 bottles of white wine.

Cazas Novas, Baiao, Vinho Verde
Cazas Novas is run by Carlos Coutinho. Located at Santa Marinha do Zezere, in the Baiao sub district of the Vinho Verde, these vineyards are the 'last outpost' before entering the red wine producing region of the Douro's Baixa Corgo. Inland, and warmer than most of the rest of the Vinho Verde, the style of wine is much broader, riper and mouthfilling, while still maintaining that Vinho Verde character of minerality combined with fresh acidity and modest alcohols. This is not Alvarinho or Loureiro territory, but Arinto, with its steely backbone combining beautifully with the floral and aromatic Avesso. Together they make a less austere, more commercially attractive style of wine, yet one that maintains good structure and poise. This wine has a really classy feel to it. Cazas Novas 2010, Vinho Verde……… £40.00 / doz 60% Arinto, 40% Avesso
Wine and Tourism. Included in the farm, Carlos's father runs the excellent Quinta de Guimaraes, a tourism destination hotel / country house par excellence, and a great base for discovering this beautiful region of Portugal The Casa de Guimarães is a manor house built in 1720 with all characteristics of the Portuguese baroque style. It forms part of a 40 hectare estate, including 6 hectares of forest and 20 of vineyards. The accommodation is in the main house rooms or in an apartment. See www.quintadeguimaraes.com

Quinta de Sant‟Ana, Mafra, Lisboa
Quinta de Sant’Ana is situated in Gradil, near Mafra, at the heart of the „Lisboa‟ wine region that traditionally supplied Lisbon with fresh fruit, wine, vegetables, milk and meat. It is an historic estate, directly bordering the 1187-hectare „Tapada de Mafra‟ – the former hunting estate of the Portuguese kings, today a wildlife park and nature reserve. Owned and run by Englishman James Frost, Quinta de Sant‟Ana now has 9.5 Hectares of vineyard. A further 1.5 Hectares are to be planted in 2012. He has seven sons to help him too! The Quinta‟s first revelation was the Sauvignon Blanc made now for the third time this year, which is big, ripe, herbaceous, and world class. And to trump even that, small production quantities of Alvarinho, Verdelho and Riesling have been produced for the first time in the 2009 vintage. To top it all off a Pinot Noir 2009 completes this incredible set of wines – release date, February 2011. All the wines show testament to the relatively cool climate prevailing on this site. The proximity to the Atlantic 15 km away is a key factor.
Tourism and wine. If you are ever in this part of the world, Quinta de Sant'Ana have small cottages to let (as well as a four bed house with pool). It is a little piece of absolute paradise just 30 minutes from Lisbon airport. And if you are thinking of getting married - they do weddings too! See www.quintadesantana.com for full details about this amazing little estate.
Also see our own website which features a video interview, plus video tasting notes with owner James Frost http://www.oakleywineagencies.co.uk/quinta-de-santana/

Bodega Arribes del Duero, Spain
Way out at the very western fringe of Spain, lying hard against the Duero/Douro river and just a stone‟s throw from Portugal is the new DO region of Arribes. Originally named Arribes del Duero, it recently changed its identity to simply Arribes, so that it would not be confused with the more famous DO of Ribera del Duero further east. Highly recommended is Arribes de Vettonia Malvasia 2008. The red variety here is the Juan Garcia, unique to the region. Relatively high in acidity it makes exquisite perfumed rosés, bursting with ripe tropical fruit, and earthy dry reds with a good balance of fruit, tannin and acidity.
White Arribes de Vettonia Malvasia blanco 2009/10 £33.00 / doz ‘poor man’s Albariño’ – though maybe a little less mineral and slightly more floral- the 2007 vintage won the ‘golden bunch’ award for best white wine produced by a cooperative (all of Spain!).
Red Arribes de Vettonia, Crianza 2008 £37.50 / doz - aged in French and Hungarian oak. Juan Garcia grape variety. Great value Crianza, which is winning friends everywhere.
