I’m Jared Calinisan, a new intern for the Green Campus Program at UC Merced. I am a juniormajoring in Management and minoring in Service Science. I have been involved in other programs thateducate people about energy efficiency, recycling, water conservation and other ways to be moresustainable. I believe that it is important to conserve Earth’s natural resources, be conscious of ourimpacts and to be considerate about future generations. I look forward to promoting sustainability andcreating projects that will get students involved and educated on how to become how to be greener.Hopefully, these projects will instill sustainable habits and inspire students to promote and spreadawareness themselves.

Welcome New Interns!

My name is Vanessa Estavillo, and I am a sophomore at the University of California, Merced. Afterpursuing a degree in Management from the University of California, Merced, with a minor in ProfessionalWriting, I plan to work with sustainable business to further promote technology which reduces energyusage. I am so glad to now be a part of Green Campus, which I hope will serve as a practical means toeducating the public about the true meaning of sustainable living.

As a “management major with a minor in writing”, as I am normally introduced, one might notbelieve my extensive work with sustainability. Being “green” and promoting sustainable behavior hasalways been important to me. I'm thoroughly excited to be part of the Green Campus program. One of my goals this semester is to make Green Campus at UCM a better and more interactive channel for the

student body. For instance, I would love to publish a research paper regarding sustainability in ournewsletters and have that newsletter broadcasted to students who attend our events. In addition, I feelthat student outreach is an important means of accomplishing our goals. We attend a sustainable schoolwith LEED certified buildings and yet very few of our students understand what it really means. With thehelp of my fellow interns, I know we can educate our campus to be sustainable, one student at a time.

Greetings! A new year calls for new changes and new projects. The UC

Merced Green Campus team has many new plans and ideas for this semester. Our first project is the National Conservation Competition, a water and energycompetition. The 9 Valley Terraces are going national and will be competingagainst other campuses from all over the states. With a 14% reduction rate inwater usage from the water battle and another 6% the month after thecompetition, UC Merced has proven it will be a fierce competitor. Look out for the

team, as we will be announcing the date of the competition and how Merced isholding up with the other contenders.  Another project that the Green Campus team will be working on is theCastle Air audit. The labs at the Castle Air museum will have a lot of potentialsavings since the museum was built in the 1940’s. A simple task such asswitching out an older lamp, an incandescent, with a newer lamp, a CFL, willmake the building more efficient. If possible, after the audit the team will also liketo retrofit the labs and museum.  The team will also like to involve more parts of the campus. We areworking on a water and energy competition, which will also include the freshmendorms. Freshmen will now have a shot at the title as UC Merced’s energy saver. We will also be going Greek and will launch a competition between thefraternities and sororities to see who can acquire the most amounts of pledges.

The team is excited about working with everyone this semester towards agreener campus. We all have the power to save!

New Year! New Projects!
