Widening Participation

Since 2006, UCD alumni, users of the AIB and Bank of Ireland Affinity Cards, and companies such as AIB, Bank of Ireland, Citi and Google have supported the Access Centre. With their help, the Access Centre has:

> delivered outreach activities in the local community to encourage school leavers to apply to UCD> awarded Alumni Fund Access Scholarships> organised mentoring programmes to provide practical advice to Access scholars.

UCD aims to become Ireland’s most diverse and inclusive university. Through the university’s Access Centre, students from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to enrol and thrive at university.

Future You

Supported by the Citi Foundation and Citigroup Ireland, Future You involves Citigroup employees and UCD undergraduate students mentoring 5th Year school pupils from Tallaght, Ballyfermot, Clondalkin and Crumlin, Dublin, during the CAO application process and the Leaving Certificate. Since its inception in 2012, 300 school pupils have participated in the initiative.

Widening Participation

120 scholars will benefit from the programme over the donor’s ten-year funding commitment. Of the 30 scholars who have received support since its launch, the majority are now working in leading companies in Ireland, such as Google, Citi, KPMG, PepsiCo and Microsoft.

Aspire was established in 2010 by an anonymous donor who wished to contribute to the Irish economy by developing the leaders of tomorrow. It provides funding for the postgraduate business studies (MBA/MSc) of those who could not otherwise afford to attend UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business.

Celebrating Excellence

To date, the academy has awarded 255 scholarships. Scholars receive both financial and individual support, including academic mentoring, peer support and access to specialist facilities and expertise.

Leading Irish businessman and philanthropist Peter Gleeson provided the founding gift to establish the academy. Subsequently, both alumni and businesses – including Arup, Bank of Ireland and Devenish Nutrition – have taken up the baton to support the academy.

Established in 2011, the Ad Astra Academy aims to foster excellence by attracting and developing the best students in Ireland. It awards merit-based scholarships to the top students who enrol as undergraduates across its three strands: Academic, Performing Arts and Elite Athlete Scholars.

Celebrating Excellence

> The Australia 1984 Scholarships were established in 2009 by John Gardiner (BCL, 1984) to honour the Rugby First XV 1984/85, who toured Australia and were Leinster Senior Cup Finalists. The scholarships honour Finbar Costello (BComm, 1961), Adrian Burke (BComm, 1962) and Ned Thornton (BComm, 1963) and celebrate the contribution these remarkable alumni made to rugby.

> Patrick Steenberge is the donor behind UCD Swim Team, supporting its dream to establish the best swimming programme in Europe and place four Olympians in the semi-finals/finals of the Rio Olympic Games.

> UCD Boat Club Graduate Fund, set up by three former captains of the men’s club, ensures that the club can stay competitive at the highest level, which includes winning Heads of the River at national and foreign regattas and representing Ireland at world cups and Olympic Games.

Sports clubs are at the heart of student life at UCD. Donors have enthusiastically supported the growth and impact of these clubs.

Enhancing Student Experience

Thanks to the support of individual alumni, friends of UCD School of Medicine and School of Veterinary Medicine and organisations such as the Medical Graduate Association, there is now a range of scholarships on offer to ensure that students can take advantage of elective opportunities, both at home and abroad.

Gaining experience in the workplace through internships and electives, and exploring topics relevant to a degree programme in greater depth have become an integral part of studying at UCD.

Enriching Student Life

> Founded in 2002, the Symphony Orchestra gives major performances each year, on campus and in the National Concert Hall. Between 2005 and 2010, philanthropic gifts enabled the orchestra to create scholarships for playing members, making it possible for the scholars to commit more time to their artistic development.

> UCD Choral Scholars was founded in 1998 and is comprised of 18 high-achieving, gifted students who are each awarded a scholarship following a competitive selection process each year. With a large choral repertoire, the Choral Scholars work regularly with Ad Astra Academy Performing Arts Scholars.

Artistic and cultural activities flourish at Belfield, thanks to the valued support of our donors. In addition to the donation and commissioning of artworks, Irish Life Investment Managers, UCD alumni and users of the AIB and Bank of Ireland UCD Affinity Cards have contributed to the success of music at UCD.

James Joyce Library – adopt-a-Book

The James Joyce Library is UCD’s centre for information and knowledge. In a difficult economic climate, many students find the cost of essential texts prohibitive and use the library’s permanent collection to support their studies. This extra pressure results in greater wear and tear, and books have to be replaced more frequently. UCD Foundation launched the Adopt-a-Book Appeal in 2010 to raise money so that the library could continue to provide an excellent service for students and alumni.

There is a rich variety of materials held in UCD Archives and Special Collections, spanning four centuries of Irish history and culture and encompassing such diverse subjects as literature, Gaelic language and folklore, music, genealogy and political history. The generosity of UCD alumni has ensured the long-term preservation of unique seventeenth-century manuscripts.

In Pursuit of Knowledge

For two or three years, these young academics are free to pursue an in-depth research project in any of UCD’s diverse disciplines, mentored by experts in their chosen field. The fellows contribute greatly to the academic research agenda of their particular discipline and to university life in general and have gone on to achieve positions of great distinction and leadership. The Newman Fellowship Programme is supported entirely by corporate and private benefactors.

The generosity of donors has enabled 72 Newman Fellowships to be awarded in subjects as diverse as Food Safety, Industrial Relations and Mental Health research. The fellowships are awarded through rigorous competition to the best and brightest early-career researchers.

Fellow in Genomics

ICON formed a strategic partnership with UCD in November 2012 to promote a shared vision for transforming research, teaching, training and innovation in the sciences in Ireland and to strengthen the ties between academic research and industry.

As part of the partnership, ICON established the ICON Newman Fellowship in Genomics, based in UCD’s School of Medicine and Medical Science and the Complex and Adaptive Systems Laboratory. The first recipient of the ICON Newman Fellowship in Genomics is Dr Colm Ryan who is conducting research into the control of gene expression by inherited variants, focusing on cardiovascular diseases and cancer. ICON also became a lead benefactor of the new UCD O’Brien Centre for Science and launched the ICON Business Academy in UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.

Fostering Fourth Level Leaders

Philanthropic funding for graduate scholarships provides a vital bridge between the undergraduate experience and future academic and executive careers. In recent years, government funding for PhDs has been reduced significantly. Yet, through the generosity of donors, UCD has been able to offer a broad range of Masters and Doctoral level scholarships in subjects as wide-ranging as suicide studies, gender differences in Irish prisons, the Radharc documentaries and the importance of education in mitigating the risks associated with diabetes.

Matheson, a valued supporter of UCD Sutherland School of Law and patron of this doctoral scholarship, has enabled a future leading light of the legal world – Elizabeth Corcoran – to dedicate herself to her research activities, unfettered by concerns about financial pressures. Elizabeth’s PhD focuses on

fiduciary duties in financial services law. Support from Matheson has also enabled UCD Sutherland School of Law to establish an annual lecture series which will benefit students, researchers, members of the practising legal world and the wider university community in the coming years.

Research at UCD addresses the challenges and opportunities that are shaping the future of Ireland and the wider world. Researchers are creating a continuum across science, engineering, the humanities, business and the arts through interdisciplinary programmes that are underpinned by fundamental research and scholarship.

Laying the Foundations

A highly visible manifestation of this investment has been the emergence of a world-class UCD Science District, which includes such landmark Atlantic-funded projects as Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, UCD School of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Hospital, UCD Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology, and the Ireland–Vietnam Virology Initiative. Today, UCD’s Science District is producing the graduates, discoveries and partnerships that are central to the continued development of key sectors of the Irish economy, such as biopharma, agri-food, ICT, medical devices and financial services.

The Atlantic Philanthropies’ catalytic investment in UCD’s science infrastructure and human capital between 1999 and 2003 paved the way for a sweeping institutional change programme that has transformed virtually every domain of university activity.

Mission Science

In September 2011, phase 1 was completed, including UCD Centre for Molecular Innovation and Drug Discovery, home to the Institute of Food and Health, the Centre for Biopharmaceutical Sciences and UCD’s nanobiotechnology programme.

In October 2013, phase 2 opened, covering 32,000 m2 over 5 storeys and comprising 33 teaching laboratories, 16 classrooms, 6 lecture theatres, a public engagement auditorium, a discovery suite and UCD Innovation Academy Hub and Knowledge Centre and world-class research facilities.

The stunning architecture of the new science centre reflects the philosophy of collaboration and innovation – the principles underpinning the vision for the project – which will enable UCD to contribute towards scientific endeavour worldwide.

The opening of the new state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities in the O’Brien Centre for Science is the culmination of a decade of transformation on UCD campus.

George Moore was an outstanding role model for UCD. As a global business leader, he never forgot his roots and always stayed close to Ireland and UCD. His support for UCD O’Brien Centre for Science will greatly enhance the experience of future generations of UCD students.

Industry partnerships are a vital component of the modern university, and universities are ranked according to the number and amount of income generated by such partnerships. In recent years, UCD Foundation has played an increasingly important role in forging partnerships between UCD and industry. One such partnership has been with Tullow Oil plc. In addition to supporting the science centre’s capital campaign, Tullow has

facilitated the appointments of Dr Peter Haughton, Professor of Petroleum Geoscience, and Dr Ivan Lokmer and Dr Tom Manzocchi, Tullow Oil Lecturers in Petroleum Geoscience. As a direct result of Tullow’s support, UCD’s students will benefit from an education delivered by experts at the leading edge of their field internationally and a curriculum constantly updated by the latest research. The impact of such investment will be profound.

Taking UCD’s Legacy Forward

In 2007, distinguished UCD graduate Peter Sutherland (BCL, 1967) pledged the lead gift in the fundraising campaign for a new UCD School of Law. Leading Irish law firms – A&L Goodbody, Arthur Cox, Mason Hayes and Curran, Matheson and William Fry – alongside a host of distinguished alumni and friends of the school also stepped forward to help make the vision a reality.

Covering 6,500 m2, UCD Sutherland School of Law houses research and study rooms, lecture halls, a moot court, client counselling rooms, an arbitration suite, judges’ chambers and student preparation rooms, as well as UCD School of Law Centre for Doctoral Research and Scholarship, UCD Commercial Law Centre and Ireland’s only Institute of Criminology.

Donors have also enabled UCD Sutherland School of Law to increase academic capacity, provide greater scholarship support for both undergraduate and graduate students and deliver public events that will provide a high-profile platform for legal debate and research.

UCD Law School has been at the forefront of legal scholarship and education in Ireland for 100 years.

Fuelling Energy Research

The strategy for the institute was the work of UCD’s Energy Advisory Board, led by alumnus Dave O’Reilly (BE, 1968), who also kick-started the fundraising campaign for the institute through his own exemplary generosity. His gift, combined with additional donations, will provide the opportunity to leverage further funding from industry and government for this initiative which will have a worldwide impact.

UCD School of Engineering & Architecture is establishing an energy institute that will host a critical mass of world-class energy researchers focused on a small number of strategically important themes, working in partnership with industry and the energy policy community.

Innovation in Dairy Production

This investment will enable UCD to double the size of its dairy herd to 200, while providing Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine students with access to state-of-the-art dairy technology. The agri-business industry is a vital component of Ireland’s economic growth. In 2012 alone, Irish dairy exports totalled €2.66 billion.

A consortium of six agri-services companies partnered with UCD Foundation to support the redevelopment of the dairy facility at UCD Lyons Research Farm in Kildare.

Belfield Transformed

> A leadership gift has facilitated the upgrade of UCD Rugby High Performance Centre and transfer of Leinster Rugby to UCD Newstead. The rugby facilities now rival any in the northern hemisphere.

> An anonymous donor enabled the restoration of the former chapel at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School to become the largest and most modern dedicated business library in Ireland, housing 20,000 books, 5,000 theses and an extensive collection of reports and related items.

> Through the generosity of Dr Peter Gleeson, UCD has been able to create the Global Lounge, a friendly, relaxed social space which looks out onto a reflective Zen garden.

> The Terrace Graduates’ Fund enabled the delicate transfer of the Kevin Barry Window from Earlsfort Terrace to UCD Charles Institute for Dermatology.

> Alumni Fund donors have supported the Woodland Walks – 8 km of woodland paths which open up the beautiful 133-hectare campus for all to enjoy.

> Making their way to the robing room on graduation day, UCD students pass under the gaze of James Joyce. The six-foot portrait by Robert Ballagh in O’Reilly Hall serves to remind students of UCD’s literary legacy. The portrait was made possible through the generosity of Dr Thomas Lynch.

Since the 1930s, when UCD’s Belfield campus was formed through the purchase of some of Dublin’s finest period houses and estates, the campus has provided an important amenity to students, staff and the local community. Below are some examples of how the campus continues to be enhanced through philanthropy.
