UCD's researchers are working with partners to find solutions to the energy
challenges of the 21st century. Energy Systems Integration is gaining

leverage its island grid and significant renewable resource to develop an
integrated system.
Agri-Food
The agri-food and agri-businesssector is Ireland’s largest indigenous
industry. Employing more than 150,000 people, it is critical to Ireland’s economy and is the foundation of our culture and
society. UCD is working with the sector to ensure sustainability and global
competitiveness. We are partneringwith industry to create safe, novel

Data Science
Data Science at UCD bringstogether key ideas from emerging

Environment

The total number of academic staff at UCD has decreased by 9% from 2004 to 2013. Furthermore, academic staff reached a peak of 1,813 full time equivalents in 2008 and has declined by 24% in 2013. While some of this reduction is due WR�D�UHFODVVLˋFDWLRQ�RI�VWDII�W\SH�IURP�academic to non-academic, there KDV�EHHQ�QRQHWKHOHVV�D�VLJQLˋFDQW�reduction in academic staff.
This makes UCD’s research achievements in the past 10 years all the more remarkable, given the reductions in academic staff coupled with an increase in student numbers over the same time period.

Ireland’s Thoroughbred Industry: The Facts
In Ireland, the thoroughbred industry directly employs 14,000 individuals. It made a direct economic contribution of €1 .1 billion to the Irish
economy in 2012. Ireland is the third largest breeder of thoroughbreds in the world.
Youth Mental Health in Ireland: The Statistics
One in six Irish people aged 11–13 and one in five aged 19–24 experience mental health problems. Ireland ranks fourth highest in the EU in terms
of deaths by suicide amongst young people.
A ground-breaking discovery: The speed gene
In 2009, Dr. Emmeline Hill discovered the ‘speed gene’, a gene that can identify the best racing distance for individual thoroughbred horses. Hill’s spin-out, Equinome, commercialises three genetic tests which allow the potential and commercial YDOXH�RI�KRUVHV�WR�EH�PD[LPLVHG��

Making a difference: UCD’s School of Psychology
In 2013, the country’s most substantial research project ever on Youth Mental Health was conducted by Headstrong, Ireland’s National Centre for Youth Mental Health, directed by Dr. Barbara Dooley. The My World Survey had phenomenal reach, with over 14,000 12-25 year olds surveyed.

However, changes in the rankings methodology, the economic crisis and increased competition from other universi-ties saw UCD ranking slide dramatically in 2011 and in 2012 from this high point.
In 2013, University College Dublin’s ranking rose 26 places from 187 to 161. The main areas where UCD improved its scores in the Times Higher Education ranking were in publications per academic, citation impact and international co-authorship. These indicators all fall within the category of improved quality and productivity in research outputs.

Faces of Research
UCD Faces of Research is a communication initiative showcasing research in UCD and its contribution to society with an international focus that delivers through a range of digital media channels. It provides a best practice benchmark for other researchers seeking to communicate their work in a readily accessible way.
The video profiles portray the passion, commitment and drive of the researcher, while also evoking some of the magic and excitement of the ‘journey of discovery’ that is research. The series gets inside the minds of leading researchers to understand what academic research means to them and why it is important. Focus is also given to the impact of research, in the broadest sense, highlighting where research has or could contribute to society in areas of health, environment, social policy, innovation, job creation and culture.
Cultúr Lab Cultúr Lab is a strategic alignment between University College Dublin and Dublin City Council which fosters the growth and development of new platforms for knowledge exchange and impact based on Ireland’s long established heritage in the Arts and Humanities.
Artist in Residence
Cultúr Lab in association with UCD College of Arts and Celtic Studies initiated the first artist in residence scheme for the humanities in 2014 building on the artist in residence programme in science. The scheme will enable artists and humanities researchers to collaborate in creating new work in new and innovative ways.
