UCD School of PsychologyUCD School of Psychology is a leading Irish centre for research, teaching and professional training in psychology, ranking in the top 200 psychology Schools in the world. The history of psychology in UCD began in 1958 when the university established the first psychology laboratory and the first psychology course in Ireland. Later UCD developed the first accredited undergraduate degree in psychology, and pioneered professional training in clinical psychology in Ireland, as well as in other areas of professional psychological practice.

This School offers the undergraduate degree in psychology, along with a number of Master programmes. This includes the Masters in Psychological Sciences which is a one-year highly competitive programme that develops students' professional skills. The programme uses a range of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment including traditional faculty-led seminars, student presentations, experiential learning, classroom role-play and case studies. An integral part of the research training is staff supervision and, usually, membership of a collaborative research team. The programme is typically taken as a bridge between the undergraduate and PhD or professional doctoral training. The focus is on acquiring basic applied psychology skills to equip the students for doctoral studies in clinical, counselling, educational or organisational psychology. The MSc Rehabilitation and Disability Studies is a two-year part time programme to develop an understanding of disability and rehabilitation theory, research and practice, both at a national and international level. It has teaching blocks throughout the two years of the programme. It involves a community of adult learners, where students are supported and nurtured so as to meet the highest standards as teachers of Mindfulness Based Interventions. The Higher Diploma in Psychology is an intensive two-year graduate conversion course for graduates with an honours degree in a discipline other than psychology, for those who would like to take the first step towards a professional career in psychology.

A PhD programme typically takes at least three years full-time and six years part-time to complete. The award of the PhD is based on the completion of a written thesis and its successful defence in a viva voce (oral examination).

The College of Social Sciences and Law has many other research programmes such as Masters by Research or Professional Doctorate in their Schools and some are collaborative and thematic by nature.

If you’re planning to apply to one of our research programmes in UCD, you must research your target programme and contact a potential supervisor before you begin the application process.

Graduate Profile

Guneet Kaur MSc in Applied Economics

The MSc. in Applied Economics is an excellent programme for students who wish to further specialize in economics. It’s a challenging yet a very interesting course. Faculty at the UCD School of Economics are fantastic and are always there to guide you through the course. It’s a well-designed curriculum, with an exceedingly large list of modules to choose from and the small class sizes guarantees a friendly atmosphere. The course work provides a rigorous grounding in the core components of modern economic analysis and I really liked the fact that I could do an Internship which helped me built my competencies further in the field. The course work gives a solid technical grounding in micro, macro, and econometrics but you were also encouraged to think about the real world behind the equations. It is a demanding programme, but that is you want a master's programme to be. This course provides you with a range of career options both in Ireland and abroad. On finishing my master’s I am now pursuing my career in economic consulting. I’m currently Interning with Indecon Economic Consultants.

Graduate ProfileLucie MartinMSc Behavioural Economics

I couldn’t be happier with my decision to pursue UCD’s MSc in Behavioural Economics. I was very impressed with the quality of the course and the teaching standards: the course incorporated multiple perspectives and disciplines, the lecturers were experts in the fields they taught us yet highly accessible, and we were able to retain some flexibility over which classes to register for based on personal interests, which made for a very intellectually stimulating year. The lecturers were also clearly attuned to the behavioural economics job market and leveraged their extensive networks to allow us to form professional connections throughout the year, thanks to guest lectures and group sessions with current professionals in the field. One particularly memorable experience was that our class got to design, implement, analyse, and present our own evaluation field trial with a policy partner as part of an experimental economics class. I use what I learned during my MSc every single day at my new job with the Behavioural Insights Team and I warmly recommend the course to anyone interested in this field from an academic, policy or industry perspective!

Scott Hamilton MSc in Quantitative EconomicsThe MSc in Quantitative Economics at UCD is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to advance their knowledge of economics. Core modules in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics allowed me to develop a solid grounding in the subject, whilst a range of optional modules allow me to hone in on my interests. Weekly seminars kept me in touch with the research frontier, presenting an opportunity to interact with contemporary ideas in the field. By the end of the second semester, I possesed a sound understanding of the fundamental technologies of economic research, whether that be applied or theoretical. The summer term sees each student apply this understanding to a research project under the guidance of a staff member. I found this a profoundly positive experience, allowing me to gather a deeper understanding of what the work of a research economist entails and put the education of the previous nine months into practice, with the invaluable support of UCD’s fantastic academic staff. I am currently working as a data engineer at Fidelity Investments. Taken together, I could not recommend this course more.

MA Ethics: Theory and Practice(One Year Full Time or 2 Years Part-time)In association wih the UCD Centre for Ethics in Public Life (CEPL), UCD School of Philosophy is offering an MA that provides philosophical training in Ethics, as well as enabling students to experience a context for professional Ethics through inter-disciplinary elements of the programme. Ethics is understood broadly as the study of how to behave well, and includes elements of moral philosophy and political/social theory.

As graduates of this module you will be well-placed to understand and help deal with ethical issues in areas such as government, healthcare, business, agriculture, planning, education, law and journalism. But you will also have had the opportunity to develop a theoretical understanding of the nature of Ethics and its place in human life more generally. Having an understanding of Ethics, both at the level of theory and in its practical contexts is of obvious benefit in a very wide variety of career paths.

The UCD Centre for Ethics in Public Life brings academic work into the public sphere by researching, teaching and talking about Ethics. It aims to become a resource for communication on ethical issues between UCD academics and the wider community - the media, schools, regulation bodies, ombudsmen, ethics advisory committees, NGOs and government bodies. It aims to take a central role in widening ethical thinking in business, medicine, law, biotechnology, IT, urban development, veterinary and food science and the financial sector. To this end it is also developing a suite of CPD programmes.

Graduate Profile

Sean Murphy, PhD candidate, Indiana University

Ireland’s (especially Dublin’s) rich literary history made it the ideal environment to work in. Whether it was in my flat or in the café, the pub, the library, the coast or the Wicklow hills, I always felt myself immersed in a swell of passionate humanists and explorers of ideas. I was surrounded by individuals who really cared about writing on and researching the depths of the human condition. What I liked most about UCD was the faculty in the School of Philosophy, and my fellow graduate students. The professors were all visibly interested in the success of their students. This was especially evident in my relationships with Brian O’Connor and Jim O’Shea. They both instilled in me the confidence that it takes to move on in philosophy, as I am now studying for my doctorate at Indiana University, a top-25 Philosophy programme in the US, where my main areas of research are 19th century German philosophy, especially Arthur Schopenhauer, moral philosophy, and aesthetics.

MSc in Demographic and Population Analytics (One Year Full Time or Two Years Part Time)The study of the population processes that shape our society requires a unique skill set. Demography is a pathway to understand core dynamics that define contemporary debates about mortality, ageing, health, migration and fertility. The MSc in Demographic and Population Analytics, which is a one year full time or two years part time programme, is unique in Ireland. By definition the curriculum is interdisciplinary, bridging sociology, social policy, health and geography to comprehensively offer insight into the concepts, research and data analysis that demographically define us.

This programme stands apart in Ireland and internationally, defining a new generation

of population scientists. Bridging the technical and theoretical, you will learn to analyse population trends that currently and increasingly shape prospects for population growth, healthcare needs and all the facets of immigrant incorporation into Ireland, the EU and globally.

You will graduate with the technical skills, substantive foundation and unique expertise to enter the private or public sector in capacities ranging from demographic analysis to data-driven research in public policy. In addition, demography offers a bridge to further academic work in cognate disciplines such as economics, sociology, social policy and public health.

The MSc in Demographic and Population Analytics is the first of its kind offered in Ireland. The programme provides students with an opportunity to study population issues in a research-led environment, with a focus on applying learning to real-world scenarios. Upon graduation, students will have the technical and substantive know-how to fill a large and important gap in graduate education nationally. They will offer the first cohort of demographers with expertise in population studies/demographic analysis, which is at the core of future public policy and planning.

Graduate Profile

Charlotte Byrne, Equality Studies graduate, Education Officer, Irish Refugee CouncilMy particular area of interest was migration and having come late to third level education I was enthusiastic in my belief that education is the key to solve so many inequalities. Since completing the Equality Studies programme, I have accessed employment at the Irish Refugee Council as Education Officer, where I support people in the asylum process to gain education and training to be ready to find employment when the time comes. We also try to influence policy to create a more level and equitable playing field. I genuinely believe that if the whole world did this course the world would be a better place as everyone would understand why equality is better for everyone. Equality Studies provides the foundation in egalitarian theory and allows you to build your Masters around areas that interest you, e.g. housing, environment, gender, human rights, education, ethnicity, children’s rights and so on. I believe that the Masters in Equality Studies is a great path towards work in any NGO, private sector, or public body in the area of equality.

MSc Human Rights (One Year Full Time or Two Years Part Time)The MSc in Human Rights is a one-year intensive course that prepares you for a career in human rights research, policy or advocacy in international organisations, governmental and non-governmental bodies, or academia. Studying human rights means exploring the rights that all people have as human beings, how these rights are reflected in national legislation and international law, how people mobilise collectively on behalf of these rights and how governments respond to these claims and obligations.

The course is delivered by academics in UCD School of Politics and International Relations, UCD School of Law, and UCD School of Social Justice, reflecting the inherently multidisciplinary nature of human rights practice encompassing political philosophy, empirical political science (comparative politics and international relations) and legal studies. You will explore the theory, politics and law of human rights and examine the mechanisms and limitations of national and international action to protect human rights. You will either complete a research dissertation or undertake a monitored internship.

Graduate Profile

Daniela Bachmann, Graduate

Understanding people and how they interact has always been of interest to me. I wasn’t entirely sure about the kind of job I wanted to work in for the rest of my life, but studying Sociology, Politics and Social Justice at UCD opened up a whole new world. I went on to study for a masters degree in Human Rights at UCD, again with a focus on development. I tutored undergraduate students in Development and Globalisation during my masters studies, and many of them were surprised at how development affects their daily lives.

I’m hoping to work with NGOs such as Amnesty International or Frontline Defenders in the future. My studies in UCD have prepared me well for what’s to come, and I am looking forward to taking the next step.

Who should apply? This new MSc in Communication & Media is designed to complement and expand existing programmes and research expertise at the School of Information & Communication studies. It is the first postgraduate degree in this field in Ireland to be offered from an Information School perspective.

This programme is intended for applicants with an undergraduate degree in any discipline. An upper second-class honours or international equivalent is required.

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element) or equivalent.

The Full Time option is suitable for Domestic (EEA) applicants and International (Non EEA) applicants currently residing outside of the EEA Region.

Course code: W440 FT (W441 PT)

Why “Communication & Media” and not “Media & Communications”? This programme puts communication first, focusing on the construction, meaning, purposes and objectives of communication. We then look at how we mediate what we want to communicate, from an interpersonal, human-computer interaction, social media or mass media perspective. “Communications” usually describe the technologies that transmit information while “Communication” focuses on what we say and do, how information is constructed, received, interpreted and how meaning is produced.

Can I shape the programme to focus on my interests? Yes – students take core modules in communication and media theory and research but can then select from a wide range of modules across many different schools in UCD including film studies, law, computer science and so on. We can help shape your preferred ‘track’ to focus on ethics & policy, design & culture or data journalism.

I want a career in journalism/public relations – is this course for me? While this programme does not teach production or practice in these fields, students will gain a firm foundation in the theory, knowledge and critical information skills required for these and many other career options.

Can I do a PhD in communication and media at UCD after this programme? Yes – the School of Information and Communications hosts a vibrant PhD programme and our staff are active in many relevant areas of research like social media studies, speech technologies, data ethics, data journalism, political communication and so on.

This new MSc degree aims to produce future professionals with a deep understanding of the communication and media landscape. On graduating, our students will be able to embark on a variety of careers in Ireland and abroad, whether in the digital media industries, in communication regulation and policy or in media design, management and research, both in the public and private sectors.

Different suggested tracks will allow students to develop the knowledge to specialise their communication and media learning for a specific setting. All three tracks include 60 credits of core modules that cover basic knowledge and skills with a thesis or media project option, with 30 credits of elective modules according to track choice. Students will gain an international perspective from lectures and seminars as well as guest talks, combining professional experience with a strong theoretical background.

Graduate Profile

Armaury Le Menn, LegalCounsel at Subsea 7, ParisThe priority for me was to apply to acommercial law LLM in a Common Law country. When I looked at UCD’s offering and the prospect of living in Dublin I did not hesitate to apply. UCD is a green campus in Dublin where you can be the best of yourself and meet interesting and diverse people. Joining the UCD Mountaineering club, just one of the many societies, was an opportunity to meet people outside of my speciality. I studied in Toulouse and Paris, France as well as Berge in Norway before coming to Ireland and the UCD campus is by far the best of the universities I attended. I have chosen to become an in-house lawyer and I work for Subsea 7, a multinational company serving the offshore energy market. My LLM at UCD definitely helped me to get the internshipwhich led to the job I have today and to prepare me for a career internationally.

The LLM in International Commercial Law is highly regarded by employers and has been the basis for many successful careers across the world. It is particularly useful for students wishing to practise with specialist corporate law fi rms or wishing to work as an in-house legal adviser. Potential employers include A&L Goodbody, Matheson, McCann FitzGerald, Mason Hayes & Curran, William Fry and Arthur Cox.

Kathy Looney, Graduate

The UCD Masters in Psychological Science provided me with invaluable experiences and opportunities. One aspect of the course that I loved was the practical nature of many of the modules. This provided the opportunity to practice relevant skills as well as to learn different psychological theories. But, what I valued most about the course was probably the high level of support and interest shown by the faculty members, from our lecturers to my thesis supervisor.

The grounding that I developed in my research and clinical knowledge was a major stepping stone towards gaining a place on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Royal Holloway University in London, where I am currently in training.

Entry Requirements• A primary degree with at least an upper second class honours in Psychology.

The degree must include a final year honours research project and, where appropriate, be recognised by the Psychology Society of the country in which the degree was awarded.

Student Profile

Killian McLoughlin MSc in Social Data Analytics Coming from a background in psychology, I chose to do the MSc in Social Data Analytics because I wanted to develop my social research and methodology skills in ways that incorporate new and exciting technologies emerging in the field of ‘big data’. I feel that in providing for this, the course is unique. During my time at UCD, I have been exposed to a variety of computer science techniques for data analysis which I have been able to apply in complementary social science modules.

To my pleasant surprise, skills like programming have all been taught at a reassuring pace for a novice like myself. By the close of the first semester, I was already being called for interviews in well-known firms in sectors and for positions that would have been closed to me before embarking on the course.

I highly recommend the MSc to anyone who is interested in using technology to do social science in entirely new ways.
