JillAndrews and Kate Richardson are amongst the most honored student-athletes in UCLA history,winning numerous academic awards on top of their athletic achieve- ments.Andrews won theWoody Hayes National Scholar-AthleteAward in 1991 and the NCAATopVI Award in 1990. She also received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors twice in her career. Richardson earned Academic All-America honors three times and was selected the Pac-10Woman of theYear.She was also awarded a NCAA post-graduate scholarship and won the NCAAToday’sTopVIII Award. UCLA Gymnastics Hall Of FamersWomen’s gymnastics is represented in the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame by six all-timegreats-gymnastsSharonShapiro,KimHamilton,JillAndrewsandLeahHommaandcoachValorieKondosField.

OnOct.30,1999,Sharon Shapiro became the first women’s gymnastics Hall of Fame inductee. Shapiroenjoyedanillustriousandhistoricath-leticcareerfortheBruins.Sheremainstheonlygymnastevertocapturenationaltitlesonallfoureventsandtheall-aroundinthesameyear,afeatsheaccomplishedatthe1980AIAWNationalChampionshipsherfreshmanseason.

In1981,ShapirowontheprestigiousBroderickAward,giventothecountry’stopfemalegym-nast.Asasophomorethatseason,shedefendedherall-aroundtitleandalsowontheindividualvault crown. The following year, she earnedAll-Americahonorsintheall-around,vaultandbalance beam.

Shapiro has remained a key alumna, supporter, and ambassador for UCLA and her sportsincehergraduation.

Kim (Hamilton) Anthony became UCLA’s secondinducteeonOct.21,2000.LikeShapiro,Hamiltonalsosetanationalrecordthathasyetto be duplicated when she won three consecutive NCAA floor exercise titles from 1987-1989. She alsowontheNCAAvaulttitlein1989.

Attheregionallevel,shewonaschool-recordtying seven titles, including three each in theall-around and floor. She also won Pac-10 cham-pionships on bars and floor in both 1989 and 1988.Inhercareer,sheearnedsixAll-Americahonors.

Anthony has also remained a major figure in thesport,havingmaintainedasuccessfulcareer

asasportscommentatorforESPNandFoxSportsandasthehostoftheMiamiTV show “County Connection.” She is also an inspirational/motivational speaker, andamentortotheU.S.nationalgymnasticsteamandat-riskhighschoolgirlsinMiami. Anthony just published her first book, Unfavorable Odds, a memoir about her journey from a background filled with drugs and violence to a Hall of Fame

careeratUCLA.

Jill Andrews joined her former teammateAnthonyintheHallofFameonOct.13,2001.In 1990, Andrews became UCLA gymnastics’ secondHondaAwardwinner,cappingoffacareerinwhichshewonanNCAAtitleonvaultin1988and on beam in 1989. Andrews earned eight first-teamAll-Americahonorsinhercareerandwasa two-time Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year.

Andrews’accomplishmentswerenotlimitedtothe gymnastics floor. She excelled academically as oneofUCLA’sall-timegreatstudent-athletes.In1990,AndrewsearnedanNCAApost-graduatescholarship andwas awarded theNCAATopSixAward.Inaddition,shewasaWoodyHayes

NationalScholar-AthleteAwardwinner.

She was also honored by the Bruin gymnastics team with an award named after her, theannualJillAndrewsawardforintegrity.

Andrews, who graduated from the Northwestern University School of Law in1994, was a Deputy City Attorney in San Francisco for six years, handling labor and employment litigation on behalf of the city and now currently works in legal counsel for NXP Semiconductors.

Homma arrived at UCLA a highly-recruitedgymnast fromCanadaandcompetedfor fouryears (1994-97), leading the Bruins to their first NCAAteamtitlein1997.HeadCoachValorieKondos Field said Homma played “the biggest role in helping our team win its first NCAA Championship. (She) was a quiet leader whoalways led by example, was an unwavering hard worker, enthusiastic about her training, and always quick tohelpout her teammates in aquiet and unassuming manner.” Homma finished fourthinthe1997NCAAAll-Aroundtohelp

bring the title to Westwood.

Homma’sotheraccomplishmentsincludedthe1994and‘97Pac-10all-aroundtitlesas well as the 1996 and ‘97 Pac-10 uneven bar crowns. She was twice named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year (1995 and ‘97) and was also an eight-time All-American, honored four times each as a first-team and second team selection. During her career, she set andresetUCLArecordsintheall-aroundandwasthesecondUCLAgymnasttoreceive10.0sintwodifferentevents.In1997,HommawasnamedUCLA’sAll-Univer-sityFemaleAthleteoftheYearandwasaHondaAwardnominee.Shealsoexcelledintheclassroom,earningPac-10All-Academichonorsonthreeoccasions.

Prior to her arrival at UCLA, she was a member of the Canadian National Team and was the 1991 Canadian champion in the floor exercise. Homma left her eter-nalmarkon theworldofgymnasticswith threemovesnamedafterher in theinternational code of points: the Homma Flip on beam and the Homma Flairs on beam and floor.

Valorie Kondos Field became just the sec-ond head coach ever to be inducted while still coaching at UCLA, earning induction onOctober 1, 2010.

SincearrivingatUCLAin1983asastudentcoach,ValorieKondosFieldhasascendedtheranksasanassistantcoachandchoreographer,co-headcoach(1991-94)andthensoleheadcoachsince1995.KondosFieldhaspositionedUCLAasthepremier program in collegiate gymnastics by guidingittoanoverallrecordof389-86-1,15Pac-10titles,17RegionalcrownsandsixNCAAtitles(1997,2000,2001,2003,2004and2010).In2010,UCLAwonNCAA,RegionalandPac-10

championshipsandproducedtwoNCAAindividualchampions.In2003,theBruinsrecorded an unprecedented five team scores of 198.0 or better en route to the NCAA title. The 2004 team set an NCAA Championship record by scoring 198.125. In 2001, UCLA gymnasts won the NCAA floor, uneven bars and all-around events andeveryBruinwhocompetedearnedAll-Americahonors.Thatyear,KondosFieldwas voted the NACGC National Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

KondosFieldhascoached15athletesto30NCAAindividualtitles,shehasmen-tored 17 Pac-10 Gymnasts of the Year and 10 Olympians since the year 2000. She alsohascoachedfourHondaAwardwinners-Andrews,MohiniBhardwaj,OnnieWillisandKristenMaloney.
