Reflection PaperThe United Colors of Comedy (UCOC) Experience

A night full of laughter and happiness. A night to at least forget all the stress in the upcoming exams in the Finals Week.

This is what the United Colors of Comedy gave to me as they performed in front of hundreds of Lasallians last March 27, 2014 at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium (TYA). Countless laughs, priceless smiles—all because of those six men standing in front who gave us a wonderful time even though it was late at night.

Lining up in front of the registration booth about 20 minutes before 6:00 PM, many questions are clouding up my mind: Will this show really be funny? Is it kind of like the ‘Gandang Gabi Vice Show’? Is the P250 price I paid for the ticket really worth it? Yet, all of these questions have to wait.

Upon entering the TYA, all were noisy. Many people were taking pictures, and some are chatting with their friends. After a few minutes, the lights started to get dimmer and dimmer. Then, the DJ started to play some introduction music. Of course, many people started to dance. I myself started to sway my hands with the beat of the music. Then, the starting host –Mr. Eri Neeman started to call on some people who were brave enough to show their dancing skills in front. Of course I didn’t dance; I am not capable of doing so. But after that brief introduction, the show proper went on. Six men—all full-time comedians—entertained us with their various benta jokes and stories which killed all the silence in the crowd. Within a span of two hours, the air was filled with various expressions from the four corners of the auditorium—animated sighs, mouths wide open, hands swaying—all denoting one emotion—happiness.

After watching the show, laughter continued to burst outside the doors of the auditorium. Everybody’s smiling and having fun with their little talks to their friends. Even my friends and I laughed hilariously as we recalled the funny jokes the comedians told us. The funniest green joke I can recall was: Zest-O ka ba? Gusto kasi kitang tusukin eh. There was also a bucket full of pick-up lines were thrown to us—all of which were extremely funny that kept me awake and wanting more.

To summarize, I can proudly say that the experience I’ve had is awesome. I never thought that this show will be so much fun. All the minutes of waiting in front of the registration booth just to get a good seat was worth it. All of the boredom and hunger (because we haven’t eaten yet) were replaced by fun and laughter. That is why, personally, I do hope that I’d be able to watch a show like this again—which is different from the stand-up comedies I can see in the television. Also, I hope that this show, The United Colors of Comedy (UCOC), will continue to spread happiness not just only to us Lasallians but also to many people here and around the world.
