As one of the symposium editors of the Connecticut Journal of International Law,

Socheth took a lead role in organizing a symposium on the Cambodian Tribunal,

the entity established to bring to trial those responsible for murdering more than

two million Cambodian citizens between 1975 and 1979. For Socheth, who was

born in Cambodia, organizing the symposium was a deeply personal experience–

her parents are survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.

As a student in the Human Rights and International Law Clinic,

Margaret and five classmates drafted and presented a report to the U.S.

House Oversight Committee on human rights violations allegedly

committed by independent contractors in Iraq. Your gifts covered their

travel expenses to Washington. “We left D.C. feeling that we opened

some eyes,” says Margaret, whose many contributions to the Law

School community include serving on the class gift committee. “It was

great knowing that the work we had done all semester was being heard

by people who could actually make a difference.”

Legal Initiative (CULI), gives generously to the Annual Fund, which the provides

essential unrestricted funding that makes opportunities available to students–on

and off campus. Why? “CULI got started because Hugh Macgill and Richard

Parker wanted a program here that would enable the Law School, as an institution,

to respond to urban issues in Hartford,” says Breetz. “To work with students who

relish the kind of experience CULI provides is hugely valuable to me as a lawyer

The University of Connecticut Law SchoolFoundation, Inc. was established in 1974 to raisefunds from the private sector to promote theeducational and research objectives of the Universityof Connecticut School of Law. The Law SchoolFoundation solicits, receives, invests, andadministers gifts and financial resources fromprivate sources for the benefit of the Law School.

There are many ways to support the Law School.Types of gifts to the Foundation include:

Annual Fund contributions are unrestricted giftsfrom graduates, friends, law firms, corporations, andfoundations. They provide consistent and criticalsupport for the areas of greatest need at the LawSchool.

Endowment funds are invested to generate a steadystream of income to benefit the Law Schoolcommunity in perpetuity. For example, presentendowments support professorships, scholarships,fellowships and lectureships. Donors also may createunrestricted endowments, which produce resourcesfor the Law School’s highest priorities and provideflexibility as these needs change. Endowment giftsoffer Law School graduates and friends theopportunity to have their name, or the name of aloved one, linked to a building, a scholarship orother fund. Endowed gifts may also be eligible formatching grant funds under the Connecticut StateMatching Endowment Gift Program. Gifts of cash,appreciated securities (including mutual funds) andother gifts of stock can be used to create anendowment fund. Donors also can fund theirendowments with gifts of real estate or through afuture estate gift.

Planned gifts allow donors to make charitablecontributions in their estate plans that both supportpersonal objectives while potentially minimizingafter-tax costs to the extent allowable by law. Manyplanned giving options allow donors and their lovedones to receive income during their lifetimes fromassets that eventually will benefit the Law School.Through a will, living trust, charitable gift annuityor retirement plan, individuals can make gifts to theLaw School that are larger than anything they couldimagine in their lifetimes.
