Denzel Johnson, boys basketball manager at Forest Hills HS, was recognized by the Metrolina Officials Association as the 2009-10 Most Help-ful School Repre-sentative to the Officials. Denzel, a junior at Forest Hills, for three years now has diligently taken care
of all of the football and basketball officials’ needs when they visit Forest Hills High School. Among other things, Denzel meets and greets the officials, shows them where to park, leads them to their dressing facili-ties, provides them with towels and water, makes sure their personal belongings are secure during the game, provides them with food from the concessions after the game, and attends to any other needs the of-ficials may have. Con-gratulations, Denzel!

The Maverick swimmers had several accomplishments this season.
Union County Championship:MRHS won both the men’s and women’s Union County Championship titles for the 3rd consecutive year.
Southern Carolina Conference:MRHS won both the men’s and women’s Conference titles this year.
Coach Laurie Lester was voted both the men’s and the women’s swim Coach of the Year.

Jacob White was named the SCC men’s swimmer of the year.
The MRHS Swim team after winning the Union County Championships.
Western Regionals:The MRHS men were the regional runner-up. MRHS women placed 3rd.
• The men claimed first place in their 200 free relay and still hold that Regional record from last year (Evan White, McKee Christiansen, Lane Bretschneider, Jacob White).
• The men claimed 1st place in their 400 free relay (Evan White, McKee Christiansen, Lane Bretschneider, Jacob White).
• Jacob White placed 1st in the 50 freestyle.
3A State ChampionshipsThe MRHS women came in 4th and MRHS men came in 5th.

BBASKETBALLThe Monroe men’s basketball team completed an undefeated (16-0) conference season. The women’s basketball team represented the Rocky River 1A/2A Conference as the number 1 seed in the state playoffs and they advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA playoffs.

The Monroe men’s basketball team won the 1A State Championship, their first since 1980, with its 62-46 win over Goldsboro.The team finished with a school best 32-1 record. Issac Blakeney was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Monroe is the only Union County school to win a boy’s basketball championship.
