The r i c k e g yTehuantepec Railway of today is a sad ending for t h e many ambitious projectsand attempts made during four hundred years t o establish a communication betweenthe oceans.

    Since the end of World War I1 there have been other proposals f o r buildinga canal at Tehuantepec by both the United Sta tes Navy and th e Corps of ArmyEngineers. The Corps of Engineers recently completed a survey of the area t ostudy t h e f e a s i b i l i t y of such a canal.

    The people of the Pac i f i c slopes are industrious, and spend most of theirtime farming, bartering, weaving, or f ishing. Tehuantepec has a l a rge marketplace where people from a l l over the area come t o sell or trade t h e i r shrimp,fish, turtle eggs , chickens, corn bread, ch i l l , co f fee , chocolate, oranges andbananas. The people of the market place usually wear t h e i r o l d e s t and mosttattered clothes i n order to s i n p i t y in t h e i r business deals.they w e a r f i n e silks, serge, and felt hats .
