Udaan joy of giving: nothing feels better

Established in 1973, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is widely acknowledged as one of the premier management institutes in India, with an international reputation for the quality of its postgraduate and doctoral level programmes. IIMB is renowned for the excellence of its faculty who have studied and taught at some of the best universities in India and abroad. Their research regularly appears in leading publications and academic journals around the world. They bring vast industry, consulting and academic experience into the classroom, making for a unique and stimulating learning environment. IIMB’s location in India’s high technology capital puts it in close proximity to some of the leading corporations in the country, giving students the opportunity to integrate classroom knowledge with extensive industry interaction.

The next phase of growth requires investment in world-class infrastructure, research, innovative teaching pedagogies, case studies, robust alumni engagement, global career placements and strong industry interactions. IIMB has started planning and executing its expansion plans at the new 110-acre campus being set up in Anekal, 25 km from the existing campus. There are also plans to build two high-rise residential buildings for students’ accommodation and a large food court at the existing Bannerghatta road campus. The new initiatives will ensure that IIMB is able to execute its vision of transforming and impacting society in many ways.

Towards meeting these objectives of growth, IIMB seeks to raise funds from alumni, corporates and individuals. Udaan, our giving policy, provides a wide basket of giving instruments such as cash equivalents, securities, real estate, equipment, deferred gifts or assets. These giving instruments, exchanged for naming opportunities, enable donors to leave their footprint for causes with long-term visibility and impact.

This document outlines various gifting options that can help donors evaluate naming opportunities that are best suited to their circumstances. Donations can be claimed as a 100% deduction under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

UDAAN is the giving policy of IIMB that provides a structure and process for gifting. The policy defines the nature of gifts that can be accepted, broad funding causes and internal decision-making bodies. The single point of contact for all matters related to gifting would be IIMB’s Office of Development Affairs (ODA) or such other department of IIMB that may be assigned this role. ODA is committed to ensure that all philanthropic activities by existing and prospective donors are conducted in a professional manner in line with IIMB’s mission, vision and strategic plans.

UDAAN: Giving Policy - HighlightsListed below are the policy highlights. It encompasses key facets of giving and the regulations that govern them.

a) Facilities, spaces, endowments or programmes may be named after individuals or entities whose generosity advances the academic mission of IIMB, and furthers the capacity of the institute to meet its teaching and scholarly objectives and to serve its community, thereby enhancing its growth and reputation. To ensure the appropriateness of the honour, IIMB follows the guidelines listed in this policy as it makes decisions on a case-by-case basis.

b) Individuals, corporations and other organizations may be considered for naming recognition, if they have made significant financial contributions to IIMB related to the naming opportunity. Decisions, regarding such a recognition, are made on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the policy guidelines and take into consideration the total cost of the project, the availability of other funds and the level of financial contribution.

c) The size of the board displaying the name of the facility, the collaterals that would carry the new name, etc., will be decided by IIMB in consultation with the donor. However, IIMB will have the final say in this matter. Streets or avenues can be named after people who have contributed significantly to the growth of the institute. It can also reflect the uniqueness of the campus with respect to geography, history, flora and fauna.

d) The various applications of gifts and naming opportunities are covered in this brochure. This list is not exhaustive and IIMB can choose to accept gifts that are not covered here. The details of the funding requirements of various causes will be updated by the Office of Development Affairs after consulting with various stakeholders of the institute.

UDAAN: Giving Options - Rationale

A. Student Scholarships

IIMB would like to ensure that no student, who is offered admission to its programmes, is deprived of the high-quality education at the institute due to financial constraints. Need-based scholarships up to hundred percent are offered to deserving candidates, based on their income and demonstrated financial inadequacy. Scholarships are also offered to exceptionally talented students based on their merit. IIMB also provides a competitive package to all those who join the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). FPM students receive a stipend in addition to tuition waiver for up to four years and nine months, helping them cover their living expenses. In addition, there are various grants that they are entitled to. To strengthen these initiatives, we look forward to your generous support by way of an endowment or by granting scholarships to a selected group of students.

B. Research Chairs

Faculty members at IIMB generate knowledge through cutting edge research in all functional areas of management that would benefit public and private sector companies, government and society in general. The knowledge generated by IIMB faculty has appeared in leading academic journals with a high citation index and impact factor. In addition, many text books and working papers are written on a regular basis by IIMB faculty. Research carried out by the faculty often results in

innovative courses and Executive Education Programmes. IIMB strives to be the hub of high-quality research and faculty members collaborate with the industry as well as other top-ranked academic institutions the world over. Setting up a research chair will ensure sustained resource support for the faculty to explore deeper into specific emerging knowledge domains and will add significantly to the body of knowledge and in the recognition of IIMB as a global leader.

C. Centres of Excellence

Centres of Excellence are set up by IIMB for interdisciplinary work in emerging focus areas. Currently there are 10 Centres of Excellence at IIMB. These Centres work across the entire spectrum of research, teaching and policy making, interacting closely with industry, other academic institutions and government. The Centres of Excellence foster thought leadership in contemporary domains through publications, innovative educational programmes and international conferences. The Centres thus become the hub of knowledge generation and dissemination.

D. Conferences

Conferences keep IIMB at the centre of academic debate and conversation. It is the meeting ground for top-quality research and scholarship. The sharing of ideas, thought-provoking exchanges and debates involving top scholars and practitioners are important aspects of IIMB’s commitment to excellence in creating an ecosystem of knowledge and expertise. Your support for such conferences will have a very significant impact.

E. Infrastructure: Land, Building and Fixed Assets

IIMB occupies a verdant 100-acre campus in Bangalore, with striking all-stone architecture, landscaped gardens and world-class infrastructure. Construction is on for a new 110-acre campus, to meet the growing needs of the Institute in line with its vision. Also, there is a need for some of the older infrastructure in the first campus to be refurbished and for new facilities to be developed. Your contribution will go a long way in ensuring that teaching, learning and research in IIMB happens in an exceptional environment.
