Udaipur: Chartered Accountant
Harshita Jain has found a mis-
sion very early in life. At the
age of twenty-two, she has
founded a social initiative Kala
Akshar to provide innovative
school education to children in
remote villages of Rajasthan.
The purpose of Kala Akshar is
to reduce school dropout rate
in Rajasthan.
Harshita, decided to start
Kalaakshaar NGO after multi-
ple visits to Rajasthan and dis-
covering high level of dropout
rates among school children.
"Apart from financial reasons,
children in remote villages also
drop out because of poor
engagement. I have observed
kids from interiors are very
smart, but are uncommunica-
tive and lose interest in tradi-
tional educational modules,"
said Harshita Jain.
She believes, even if govern-
ment and NGOs ensure infra-
structure support the kids need
to remain engaged so that
they themselves would look for-
ward to school each day.
Kala Akshar takes a game-
based creat ive learning
approach. It also partners with
community members and par-
ents of children and educates
them about financial inclusion,
nutritional requirements and
overall welfare of children. It
also installs smart digital boards
at schools for increased par-
ticipation.Kala Akshar has start-
ed its operations in Udaipur
District and has reached about
500 students so far. Its recent
camp in Kadechavas village,
which is about two hours from
Udaipur was a resounding suc-
cess. Kids were taught vari-
ous subjects through indoor
and outdoor games, paintings
etc. A doctor was also part of
the camp and explained kids
and their parents about the
importance of de-worming and
how it improves nutritional
intake and keeps them healthy.
Kala Akshar brings corporate
executives, senior students
from schools in large cities to
immerse in the programs and
impart their knowledge during
the engagements. School
teachers and community elders
are very positive about part-
nering with Kala Akshar.
"We have seen increased par-
ticipation from students and we
would try to partner and repli-
cate more such teaching meth-
ods across Rajasthan to reduce
school dropout," said Jain.
"I know it is an ambitious
thought but I strongly believe
it is possible through commu-
nity initiatives, smart and
engaging educational mod-
ules," said Jain. Rajasthan has
one of the highest school
dropout rates in India.
Kala Akshar has reached about
500 students so far in 2017 and
aims reach 5000 student in the
next two years.
