The 16th of November is the International day for Tolerance.

It was created by the United Nations and the UNESCO, in order to promote tolerance. It is directed toward educational establishments and also toward a wider public.

According to UNESCO, it can serve for

- Education on tolerance

- Social and political reflection

- Debate on problems of intolerance

Definition of the UNESCO in the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance (article 1) :

« Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. »

Tolerance means

“ Accepting the fact that human beings, naturally diverse in their appearance, situation, speech, behaviour and values, have the right to live in peace and to be as they are.”

Intolerance is often based on ignorance and fear: fear of the unknown, of the "other", other cultures, religions and nations.

But this is only one image of the french culture. When you go to the country, you discover that the reality is more complex than first thought.

Even if France has a national cohesion (through national language, belonging to the same country), there is still local disparities.

It is important to mark International day for Tolerance because differences are everywhere.
