Match backgroundSL Benfica face the task of stopping Borussia Dortmund's free-scoring attackers when these two former EuropeanCup-winning clubs come together in Lisbon for the first leg of their round of 16 contest.

• Dortmund set a scoring record in the group stage – hitting 21 goals as they finished above Real Madrid CF in GroupF – and now turn their sights on Benfica, the two-time winners who finished as Group B runners-up behind SSCNapoli.

Previous meetings• Dortmund prevailed when the clubs met in the European Champion Clubs' Cup first round in 1963/64. Benfica wonthe first leg 2-1 in Lisbon as António Simões and Eusébio struck either side of Dortmund's Reinhold Wosab, but theywere overwhelmed 5-0 in the return with Franz Brungs hitting a hat-trick and Friedhelm 'Timo' Konietzka and Wosabalso on target.

Match backgroundBenfica• Benfica are looking to reach the quarter-finals for the third time in the past six seasons. Last year they beat FC Zenit1-0 at home and 2-1 away at this stage before a 3-2 aggregate loss to FC Bayern München in the last eight.

• Benfica gained the fewest points (eight) of the 16 teams that survived the group phase.

• Rui Vitória's men have lost two of their last ten UEFA Champions League home fixtures (W5 D3). One of thosedefeats was against Napoli (1-2) on matchday six.

• Including last April's 2-2 home draw with Bayern in the quarter-finals, Benfica are unbeaten in four home matchesagainst German opposition. The last Bundesliga side to beat them in Lisbon were FC Schalke 04, 2-1 group stagevictors in December 2010.

• Their overall home record against German clubs is W10 D8 L2.

Dortmund• UEFA Champions League winners in 1997, Dortmund are seeking a third quarter-final appearance this decade.

• Dortmund had never won in Portugal until 2016 but are now chasing a third victory there in the last 12 months havingalready scalped Porto in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-0) and Sporting Clube de Portugal (2-1) inthis term's group stage. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl scored in the latter success, which Dortmundfollowed up by beating Sporting 1-0 at home.

• Dortmund's record-breaking 21-goal haul in the group stage included ten away goals – six of which came in their 6-0stroll at Legia Warzsawa on matchday one.

• Overall Thomas Tuchel's team have lost just two of 11 European away fixtures played since the start of last season(W7 D2 L2).

Player links• Eliseu netted for Málaga CF in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg at Dortmund in April 2013.His goal put Málaga 2-1 up on the night – and overall – but the Bundesliga side snatched a 3-2 victory with twoadded-time goals.

• Eliseu was in the Portugal team that eliminated Łukasz Piszczek's Poland on penalties in the UEFA EURO 2016quarter-finals.

• André Schürrle struck twice against Júlio César in Germany's 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFAWorld Cup. In that same tournament Schürrle, as a substitute, appeared alongside Mario Götze in a 4-0 group stagethrashing of a Portugal outfit including substitute André Almeida.

• Schürrle scored and Gonzalo Castro also played in Bayer 04 Leverkusen's 2-1 defeat at Benfica in the 2012/13UEFA Europa League round of 32. Leverkusen had lost the first leg 1-0 on 14 February – the same day on which thisfirst leg takes place. Luisão, André Almeida, Jardel and Eduardo Salvio played for Benfica.

• Castro was still at Leverkusen when they held Benfica 0-0 in Lisbon in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League groupstage.

• Jonas registered for Valencia CF in away (1-2) and home (3-1) encounters with Schürrle and Castro's Leverkusen inthe 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage. Schürrle scored in Leverkusen.

UEFA makes new donation of €100,000 to ICRCUEFA will mark a decade of helping Afghan landmine victims on Wednesday, when Real Madrid defender SergioRamos presents a cheque for €100,000 to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

"I would like to pay tribute to the ICRC, who have been working relentlessly to help landmine victims, many of whomare children. Their programme in Afghanistan, which has been in place for several years, shows that football can offerreal hope in challenging times," said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.

"I am glad that UEFA can help this cause, and that the sport we love can have a positive impact on the rehabilitationprocess of so many people in this troubled region," he added.

The donation supports the ICRC's physical rehabilitation programme for landmine victims and other people withdisabilities in Afghanistan – providing artificial limbs, physiotherapy, vocational training and access to the rehabilitationcentre's football team. About a third of patients are children.

Sergio Ramos will present the donation before his side's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg match againstNapoli at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid on 15 February.

"The people benefiting from the ICRC programme in Afghanistan are an inspiration to us, as they set an example ofhow to approach life in a positive manner despite the problems that they face," the Real Madrid captain said.

Head coachRui VitóriaDate of birth: 16 April 1970Nationality: PortuguesePlaying career: Fanhões, UD Vilafranquense, Seixal Clube 1925, Casa Pia AC, GD AlcochetenseCoaching career: UD Vilafranquense, SL Benfica (Under-19), CD Fátima, FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC, SLBenfica

• Born in Alverca do Ribatejo, in the Lisbon district, Rui Vitória spent the majority of his playing career as a midfielderwith clubs from the Portuguese capital's metropolitan area.

• Always plied his trade in the lower divisions and was a mainstay at Vilafranquense for nine seasons. After hangingup his boots at 32 in the middle of 2002/03, he began his coaching career immediately at the club, whilesimultaneously working as a PE teacher.

• His first association with Benfica came two seasons later, as he led the Eagles' Under-19 setup for two years, aperiod which began his steady rise in Portuguese football. The first step was taken at Fátima in 2006, where his debutseason was marked by promotion to the second division followed by immediate relegation, a journey repeated in thenext two campaigns.

• His good work led him to Paços de Ferreira in the top division. The first season ended with a seventh-place finish inthe Liga and defeat by Benfica in the 2010/11 League Cup final. Departed three games into the following season butonly took a week to find a new employer, in the shape of Guimarães.

• In four seasons at the helm of the Minho outfit, he made his name by building competitive sides with few resources,as well as detecting and developing young talents. His highlight was victory over Benfica in the 2012/13 PortugueseCup final, only the second trophy in the club's history. On 15 June 2015, he was announced as Benfica's new coachon a three-year contract, and won the Liga and League Cup in his first season.

Thomas TuchelDate of birth: 29 August 1973Nationality: GermanPlaying career: FC Augsburg U19s, Stuttgarter Kickers, SSV Ulm 1846Coaching career: VfB Stuttgart (youth coach and U19s assistant coach), FC Augsburg (U19s, academy coordinatorand reserves), 1. FSV Mainz 05 (U19s and first-team head coach), Borussia Dortmund

• Tuchel had a fairly undistinguished playing career, retiring prematurely in 1998 due to injury.

• His first off-pitch role was with the Stuttgart youth team. He subsequently joined Augsburg, where he coached theU19s and reserve sides as well as serving as academy coordinator.

• Tuchel moved to Mainz in 2008 and was initially in charge of the U19s, whom he led to a German title. A year afterjoining the club, Tuchel succeeded Jørn Andersen as coach of the senior team. He went on to qualify twice for theUEFA Europa League, though Mainz were eliminated at the third qualifying round stage on both occasions.

• He took over from Jürgen Klopp in the Dortmund dugout prior to the 2015/16 campaign and led his side to the UEFAEuropa League quarter-finals, where they came up against Klopp's Liverpool team – and lost 5-4 on aggregate.

• Dortmund fared well under Tuchel in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, racking up 78 points to finish second behind BayernMünchen and qualify automatically for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stage. They were also beaten byBayern in the German Cup final in Tuchel's debut season.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 36 times, including Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético deMadrid in the 2015/16 quarter-finals. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finalsand FC Internazionale Milano's victory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after ahome first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-seven ties have been decided on away goals, including eight where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 27 ties have required extra time. Eleven have been settled by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, five round of16 encounters – including Bayern-Juventus in 2015/16 – the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool FC,and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Real Madrid won 6-1 at FC Schalke 04 in the 2013/14 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for thebiggest first-leg lead – Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16. Bayerneventually went through 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over itstwo legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the last club topick up consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997)and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing hisown mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17;Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03)managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in the competition – two more thanRonaldo.

• SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete at this level, having been aged 43 years and 252days when he figured against Madrid on matchday six of the 2007/08 edition.

• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in AS Roma's 1-1 drawat PFC CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years and 290 days) was the previous record holder.
