Match backgroundParis Saint-Germain let slip their advantage at Real Madrid CF and two late goals from the holders have left theirFrench opponents with plenty of work to do – but Paris have form when it comes to turning round a 3-1 first-leg deficitagainst the Spanish side.

• Adrien Rabiot put Paris in front at the Santiago Bernabéu, Cristiano Ronaldo levelling from the penalty spot on thestroke of half-time – his 100th UEFA Champions League goal for Madrid. It was 101 when the Portuguese star struckagain seven minutes from time, with Marcelo adding a third three minutes later.

• Paris won their first five Group B games to top the standings ahead of FC Bayern München while Madrid finishedsecond to Tottenham Hotspur FC in Group H – the second year running they have been runners-up in their section.

• However, while the Spanish side have got to the semi-finals or better in each of the last seven seasons, Paris willneed no reminding of their remarkable exit at this stage at the hands of FC Barcelona 12 months ago – their mostrecent tie against Spanish opponents.

Previous meetings• The teams last met in the 2015/16 group stage, when a 0-0 draw in Paris preceded a 1-0 Real Madrid win in Spain,Nacho scoring the only goal in the 35th minute having come on only two minutes earlier. That helped the Merenguesto finish first in the section, three points ahead of their French rivals.

• The line-ups at the Parc des Princes on 21 October 2015 were:Paris: Trapp, Aurier, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Maxwell, Verratti (Lavezzi 80), Motta, Matuidi, Di María (Lucas 67),Cavani (Pastore 67), Ibrahimović.Madrid: Navas, Danilo, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Casemiro, Kroos, Isco (Modrić 69), Vázquez, Jesé (Cheryshev 73),Ronaldo.

• In the former tie, Madrid were 3-1 winners in Spain but were heading out when George Weah (33), David Ginola (81)and Valdo (87) put Paris 3-0 up in the Parc des Princes return. Iván Zamorano (90+3) seemed to have sent the tie intoextra time, but Antoine Kombouaré struck a minute later to take the French side through.

Match backgroundParis• This is Paris's sixth successive round of 16 tie – and also their sixth overall. They won the first four, but exited indramatic circumstances at this stage 12 months ago.

• Paris were on the wrong end of the biggest comeback in UEFA Champions League history in last term's round of 16.Having won 4-0 at home to Barcelona, the French outfit succumbed 6-1 in the away leg to bow out – with Neymar, now of Paris, providing two Barça goals and an assist.

• Beaten 3-1 by Bayern on matchday six to prevent them winning all six Group B games, Paris nevertheless finishedthe section with 25 goals, setting a new UEFA Champions League record.

• Paris have lost just one of their last 46 European home games since crashing 4-2 to Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC in the2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage (W30 D15) – going down 3-1 to Barcelona in the 2014/15 quarter-finals.

• That defeat by Barcelona was only Paris's second in 13 matches against Spanish visitors. Their previous loss was 3-1 against RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2000/01 second group stage.

• Paris's home record against Spanish visitors reads W7 D5 L2; overall it is W11 D7 L11. They have won just one ofthe last eight such encounters, home and away.

• Paris have lost the away first leg 3-1 on only one previous occasion in a UEFA competition tie – that 1992/93 UEFACup quarter-final against Madrid, when they were 4-1 victors at the Parc des Princes.

• That is one of seven European ties in which Paris have lost away in the first leg – they have won five of them, although the most recent ended in an aggregate defeat, against SL Benfica in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa Leagueround of 16 (1-2 a, 1-1 h).

Head coachUnai EmeryDate of birth: 3 November 1971Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Real Sociedad de Fútbol, CD Toledo, Racing de Ferrol, CD Leganés, Lorca Deportiva CFCoaching career: Lorca Deportiva CF, UD Almería, Valencia CF, FC Spartak Moskva, Sevilla FC, Paris Saint-Germain

• The son and grandson of famous goalkeepers, Unai Emery took his first steps as a footballer in the youth ranks atReal Sociedad, where he played as a left-sided midfielder. Failed to reach the first team but carved out a career in thelower leagues with Toledo, Ferrol, Leganés and Lorca before being forced to retire at 33 having suffered a knee injury.

• He was immediately offered the chance to coach Lorca – the club with whom he had ended his playing career – andtook them up to the second division in his first season in charge, 2004/05. After coming close to taking Lorca into theSpanish top flight the following season, was appointed by Almería ahead of 2006/07 and duly won promotion to theLiga.

• Almería shone among the Spanish elite, finishing the season in eighth place while their manager's reputation soared, earning him a call to replace Ronald Koeman at Valencia, whom he guided to third place in the Liga in both 2009/10and 2010/11.

• Repeated the third-place finish in 2011/12 but stepped down at the end of the campaign, agreeing a two-yearcontract to take charge of Spartak in May 2012 but lasted only till that November.

• Swiftly returned to Spain, and Sevilla, who he led to a 2013/14 UEFA Europa League final victory against SL Benficavia a semi-final defeat of Valencia. Repeated the trick a year later, Sevilla seeing off FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk inWarsaw to retain the trophy, before an unprecedented hat-trick with 2016's defeat of Liverpool FC in Basel. That wasEmery's last hurrah at Sevilla; he left to join Paris on a two-year deal that June, winning a French and League Cupdouble in his first season.

Zinédine ZidaneDate of birth: 23 June 1972Nationality: FrenchPlaying career: AS Cannes, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Real Madrid CFCoaching career: Real Madrid CF

• Born in Marseille to Algerian immigrant parents, Zidane took his first steps towards footballing superstardom atCannes, transferring to Bordeaux in 1992. Blossomed into a French international, scoring twice on his debut againstthe Czech Republic in August 1994.

• Left Bordeaux after helping them reach the 1996 UEFA Cup final and joined Juventus, where he was a Serie Awinner and UEFA Champions League runner-up in each of his first two seasons. Made a then world-record €78mswitch to Madrid in 2001.

• Inspired France to 1998 FIFA World Cup glory – scoring two headers in the Saint-Denis final against Brazil – and atUEFA EURO 2000, where he was player of the tournament; winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1998, he was also voted FIFAWorld Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003.

• Made it third time lucky in the UEFA Champions League final by hitting a spectacular volleyed winner in Madrid's 2-1victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 showpiece at Hampden Park. Landed the UEFA Super Cup,European/South American Cup and Spanish Liga the following season.

• Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational atthe 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, wasdismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy, the last match of his career.

• Became assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season Madrid claimed their tenth European title. Took chargeof Real Madrid Castilla for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeeded Rafael Benítez as head coach, leadingthe club to yet another European Cup that May – the seventh to lift the trophy as player and coach. Added the UEFASuper Cup three months later, making him the fifth man to win that trophy in both guises, and finished 2016/17 bybecoming the first coach to win successive UEFA Champions Leagues, also guiding Madrid to a first Liga title in fiveyears.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 40 times, including FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund,Leicester City FC and AS Monaco FC in the 2016/17 round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FCin the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-eight ties have been decided on away goals, including nine where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelseaand Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Liverpool FC (versus FC Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş JK) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equallingthe knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 andBayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16. Bayern eventually beatSporting 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs thanany UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, withMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), FilippoInzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against Manchester City FC on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in thecompetition, a record Ronaldo matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals.
