Match backgroundLiverpool return to the scene of last season's UEFA Champions League triumph as they visit Atlético Madrid in thefirst leg of their round of 16 tie.

• The contest brings together two sides with formidable recent knockout records in European football. Liverpool havereached the last two UEFA Champions League finals and are unbeaten in two-legged knockout ties under JürgenKlopp; Atlético were UEFA Champions League runners-up in 2014 and 2016 and won the UEFA Europa League twoseasons ago.

• The first leg will hold happy memories for Liverpool, who defeated Tottenham Hotspur in last season's final atAtlético's Estadio Metropolitano home.

• Both sides were made to wait until Matchday 6 before securing their last-16 places with 2-0 wins; Liverpool werevictors at Salzburg to win Group E, while a home defeat of Lokomotiv Moskva meant Atlético finished second in GroupD.

Previous meetings• The teams have not met since the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League semi-finals, a tie Atlético won on away goals aftera 2-2 aggregate draw. Diego Forlán got the only goal of the first game in Spain, Alberto Aquilani levelling the tie aminute before half-time in Liverpool. With no further goals the match went to extra time, Yossi Benayoun puttingLiverpool in front on aggregate in the 95th minute only for Forlán to supply the decisive moment seven minutes later.

• Atlético went on to beat another English club, Fulham, in the final in Hamburg, Forlán getting both goals in a 2-1 win.

• The sides met for the first time in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage with both games ending 1-1,Simão scoring in the 83rd minute at the Vicente Calderón after Robbie Keane had given Liverpool a 14th-minute lead.At Anfield, a Steven Gerrard penalty five minutes into added time earned the home side a point, Maxi Rodríguezhaving put Atlético in front in the 37th minute.

• Liverpool went on to top Group D with 14 points and Atlético finished as runners-up on 12. Los Rojiblancos wereknocked out by Porto on away goals in the last 16, while the Reds lost to Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Form guide Atlético • Atlético finished with ten points in this season's group stage, six behind Juventus. Having fought back from two goalsdown to draw with Juve on Matchday 1, Atlético then won 2-0 at Lokomotiv Moskva and 1-0 at home to BayerLeverkusen only to lose 2-1 in Germany and 1-0 at Juve; a 2-0 defeat of Lokomotiv in Madrid on Matchday 6nevertheless earned second place.

• Second in Spain in 2018/19, this is Atlético's tenth UEFA Champions League campaign and their eighth appearancein the knockout stages.

• Atleti also finished second in their section in 2018/19 and bowed out in the round of 16 after succumbing to aJuventus fightback (2-0 h, 0-3 a).

• The Spanish side have still won four of their six round of 16 ties, losing only the first – on away goals against Porto in2008/09 – and the last. Their most recent win was a 4-2 aggregate defeat of Leverkusen in 2016/17 (4-2 a, 0-0 h).

• Last season's 2-0 first-leg win against Juventus extended Atlético's unbeaten run in home UEFA Champions Leagueknockout matches to 13 (W8 D5), since a 3-2 loss to Ajax in the 1996/97 quarter-final second leg that sealed a 4-3aggregate defeat.

• A 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Matchday 2 in 2017/18 is Atlético's only defeat in the last 25 European games in their ownstadium (W20 D4).

• Despite defeats on Matchdays 4 and 5 this season, Atlético have lost only five of their last 28 matches in continentalcompetition (W17 D6).

• Atlético's last meetings with an English club came in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League semi-final, when they beatArsenal 2-1 on aggregate (1-1 a, 1-0 h). They have been victorious in eight of their ten two-legged knockout contestsagainst English teams, including the last four; only Derby County (1974/75 UEFA Cup) and Bolton Wanderers(2007/08 UEFA Cup) have eliminated them.

• At home Atlético have lost just once in 12 visits from English clubs (W7 D4) – that 2017 defeat against Chelsea intheir first European game at the Estadio Metropolitano.

• The Rojiblancos have reached two UEFA Champions League and three UEFA Europa League finals in the last tenseasons.

Liverpool• Liverpool won Group E with 13 points, one ahead of Napoli who were 2-0 winners against the holders on Matchday1. The Reds won their next three matches, at home against Salzburg (4-3) and away (4-1) and home (2-1) againstGenk, before being held 1-1 by Napoli at Anfield on Matchday 5. A 2-0 success at Salzburg proved enough to secureprogress in first place.

• Last season, Jürgen Klopp's team beat Bayern München 3-1 away in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, goingthrough by the same aggregate score, before ousting Porto 6-1 over two legs in the quarter-finals (2-0 h, 4-1 a). Thejourney looked to be over when the Reds went down 3-0 at Barcelona in the semi-final first leg, but two goals apiecefrom Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi sealed a rousing second-leg turnaround, before Mohamed Salah andOrigi secured the club's sixth European Cup with a 2-0 final defeat of Tottenham in Madrid.

• Those results mean Liverpool have won their last 11 two-legged European ties, qualifying included. Their last defeatwas on penalties in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 32 against Beşiktaş (1-0 home, 0-1 away). They havenot lost a knockout phase tie in the UEFA Champions League since Chelsea beat them 7-5 on aggregate in the2008/09 quarter-finals.

• The remarkable comeback win against Barcelona in 2018/19 made it four wins out of four against Spanish clubs intwo-legged European Cup knockout ties for Liverpool, whose overall aggregate record in knockout ties with Liga sidesis W9 L2.

• That second-leg win against Barcelona was only Liverpool's second success in their last ten fixtures against Spanishclubs (D2 L6) – a sequence that also includes 3-1 losses under Klopp in the 2016 UEFA Europa League final toSevilla and the 2018 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid.

• The 3-0 loss at Barcelona last season made it five games without a win away to Spanish sides (D1 L4), sinceLiverpool's 1-0 victory at Real Madrid in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League round of 16, although their overallrecord in Spain is W7 D5 L6.

• Liverpool have won nine of their last 12 European fixtures (D2 L1) but have lost seven of their last 13 UEFAcompetition matches outside England.

• Premier League runners-up in 2018/19, this is Liverpool's third successive appearance in the round of 16 and eighthoverall; their record is W6 L1. The sole defeat came against Benfica as holders in 2005/06.

• The Reds are unbeaten in eight UEFA Champions League round of 16 matches (W6 D2) and had kept sevenconsecutive clean sheets before conceding at Bayern last season. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss at home toBarcelona in the 2006/07 second leg; they won that tie on away goals having triumphed 2-1 in Spain.

• Liverpool have already claimed European silverware this term, beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw inthe UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul. They also won the FIFA Club World Cup in December, overcoming Flamengo 1-0after extra time in the final.

Head coachDiego SimeoneDate of birth: 28 April 1970Nationality: ArgentinianPlaying career: Vélez Sarsfield, Pisa, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid (twice), Internazionale Milano, Lazio, Racing ClubCoaching career: Racing Club (twice), Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo, Catania, Atlético Madrid

• Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18,making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired asArgentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later heleft for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for oneseason – alongside Diego Maradona.

• Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours toadd to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina.

• Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italiadouble in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a secondspell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.

• Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and RiverPlate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointmentin December 2011 at Atlético.

• Led Atlético to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey finaltriumph over Real Madrid in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league titlesince 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Took Atlético to another UEFAChampions League final in 2016, which they again lost to Madrid, but collected more silverware two years later withanother UEFA Europa League triumph and followed up by finally getting the better of Madrid in Europe with victory inthe UEFA Super Cup.

Jürgen KloppDate of birth: 16 June 1967Nationality: GermanPlaying career: Glatten, Ergenzingen, Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, MainzCoaching career: Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool

• Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turnedprofessional with Mainz, starting off as a striker before becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the topflight but made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record by scoring 52 goals.

• 'Kloppo' was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the club avoid relegation to the thirdtier. Duly won a permanent contract and built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2. Bundesliga; narrowlymissed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003 before taking Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and keptthem there until 2007, taking them into the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking.

• After another promotion near-miss in 2007/08 Klopp left for Dortmund. Took them to sixth in his first season, ledthem into the UEFA Europa League the next year and then, with a squad full of exciting young talent, oversaw leaguetitle wins in 2010/11 and 2011/12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign with a 5-2 final victory againstBayern München.

• Earned even greater admiration in 2012/13 as he steered Dortmund all the way to the UEFA Champions Leaguefinal at Wembley, where they lost to Bayern. Dortmund reached more domestic cup finals in 2014 and 2015, losing toBayern and Wolfsburg respectively, Klopp departing after the latter defeat.

• Succeeded Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager in October 2015 and reached the finals of the English LeagueCup and UEFA Europa League – helped by a quarter-final defeat of Dortmund – in his first season. Lost both, andthere was more final disappointment in 2017/18, which ended in UEFA Champions League defeat by Real Madrid inKyiv. Although Liverpool lost out to Manchester City in the 2018/19 Premier League, finishing second despitecollecting 97 points and losing only once, solace came with victory against Tottenham in the UEFA ChampionsLeague final in Madrid. The Reds kicked off the following season by claiming the UEFA Super Cup on penalties atChelsea's expense.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successivetitles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 24 times, including 23 insuccession. They have also played a competition-high 97 knockout phase matches – ahead of Bayern München (92)and Barcelona (91).

• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 48 times, including six in 2018/19 – a competition record for asingle season.

• Before last season, only twice – Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale'svictory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. However, Ajaxagain (against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the2018/19 round of 16 before Tottenham (against Ajax) did likewise in the semi-finals.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0at home; Roma equalled that margin in the 2017/18 quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona witha 3-0 home success, while in the 2018/19 semi-finals Liverpool lost 3-0 in the first leg at Barcelona but went throughafter a 4-0 home victory.

• Thirty-three ties have been decided on away goals, including 13 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayernand Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times – more than any other club – whereas Internazionalehave been eliminated by that method a record four times.

• In all, 29 ties have required extra time. Thirteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encountersincluding Porto-Roma in 2018/19, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, and the2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appearedin three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (twoapiece).

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteenhave finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals.

• Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling theknockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; thattie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it wasequalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final.

• Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions Leagueknockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 secondleg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition.

• A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. Including 2019/20, England has alsoprovided four clubs on eight other occasions – as has Spain five times and Germany twice. England is the only nation

to have provided four quarter-finalists in a season, 2018/19 being the third occasion after 2007/08 and 2008/09.

• There are four clubs from two nations in the round of 16 for only the third time in 2019/20. England and Spain bothhad four apiece in 2008/09, and there were four each from England and Germany in 2013/14.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to have lifted the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998,Milan 2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win it three times, a feat CarloAncelotti (Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) and Zinédine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) have replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Internazionale2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

Goalscoring records• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusenon 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Thirteenmore players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, including two Bayern players, Serge Gnabryand Robert Lewandowski, in this season's group fixtures at Tottenham Hotspur and Crvena zvezda respectively.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsinghis own mark of nine in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18.Messi got ten goals in 2016/17, as did Lewandowski this season; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy(2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi, Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03), Lewandowski (2018/19) and Erling Braut Haaland(2019/20) all managed eight.

• Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday 1 of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in thecompetition, a mark Ronaldo matched against Atlético Madrid in that season's round of 16 second leg.

Oldest and youngest players• Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featuredagainst Real Madrid on Matchday 6 in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldestoutfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07.

• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw atCSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder.
