Su VentajaSo how are you doing? Really, I want to know how you aredoing!
I hear all the time about how the tax cuts helpedeveryone. Did it help you? I can tell you personally, I paid morein taxes than I did the previous year. I did not see an increasein income due to the tax cuts - did you?
One of the other promises around thetax cuts was corporations (whom receivedthe bulk of the tax cuts by the way) were goingto take the tax cut savings and reinvest in newstores, new plants, and wages for theiremployees. Has your employer done any ofthose things? PROBABLY NOT. Employersare sitting on the cash and instead ofreinvesting in their companies and theiremployees, they are giving stock holderslarger dividends and CEO’s HUGE bonuses!
Another thing I hear all the time is howwe have historically low unemployment. Ibelieve we do, BUT what they aren’t tellingyou is many of the “employed” are working 2 or 3 jobs just toget by! How many jobs out there provide a LIVING WAGE andAFFORDABLE BENEFITS that you can raise a family on? Notvery many. The unemployment numbers look great, but arethings really better -- I don’t think so.
You look at the title of this article and think “So, I reallydon’t have an advantage then,” right? WRONG! You have abig advantage, you belong to a UNION!!!
Now, I know what you are thinking…everything I justwrote above is happening to me - how is being a Union memberan advantage? Well, let me ask you, without your Union, wouldyou have GUARANTEED WAGE INCREASES? Without yourUnion, would you have AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE?Without your Union, would you have a GRIEVANCEPROCEEDURE that can protect your job? Without your Union, would you have WORK AND SAFETY RULES protecting you?Maybe, the biggest advantage you have as a Union memberis you have a VOICE, when spoken together with yourcoworkers, cannot be ignored by your employer!
Every few years, we sit down with some of yourcoworkers (the negotiating committee) and your employer tonegotiate a new contract. Will you use your ADVANTAGE, joinyour Union, and speak with a strong, clear voice demanding aLIVING WAGE, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE, and DIGNITYAND RESPECT ON THE JOB? Or will you allow your employerto ignore your voice, your advantage? I personally chose touse my ADVANTAGE and say UNION - YES!!!
No muchos.
A UNIÓN.

YOUR ROLE IN ORGANIZING
There are two reasons for you to become personally involvedin organizing activity outside of your workplace. First, a healthy, effective union is one in which the members pitch in to do thework, greatly increasing the people-resources of the union.Second, no matter how skilled professional union staff may be- if there is one at all - there is an extra measure of credibilitywhen an already-organized employee speaks directly to anunorganized worker about day-to-day experiences. Thesuccesses of member-to-member organizing are clear: onestudy issued by the AFL-CIO, for example, documents thatunions win representation elections in 73 percent of theorganizing drives conducted by ordinary members but in only17 percent of those conducted by professional staff.
Adapted from The Union Member’s Complete Guide, byMichael Mauer.

Why Union?Unions are good for the economy and good for American democracywhen workers join together in unions. CONSIDER THESE FACTS:
Unions raise wages for all workers. Unions paved the way tothe middle class for millions of workers and pioneered benefits along theway, including paid health care and pensions. Even today union workersearn significantly more on average than non-union counterparts and unionemployers are more likely to provide benefits. Workers in low-wageindustries, women, African-American, and Latino workers have higherwages in unionized workplaces.
Without union, fewer workers get ahead.Shrinking union membership will hurt all Americans.Corporations rather than workers are increasingly rewardedfor growth in the economy. Long before the financial crisisbegan, working families were struggling to make endsmeet. Americans productivity has expanded, but most ofthat economic boom bypassed workers, real wages haveremained flat, yet corporate profits have skyrocketed.
Higher wages are competitive. Critics argue theUnion wages are too high and make it hard for Americanemployers to compete globally. Yet competitiveness isalso linked to productivity, quality, and innovation all ofwhich can be enhanced with higher wages.
Unionization and high worker productivity often go hand-in-hand. Fairness on the job and wages that reflect marketplace successcontribute to more motivated workers. Given the pressures of globalizationand competitiveness today, unions have been responsive to increasingproductivity and embracing new innovations.
Unions improve communication between workers andmanagers. Unions give workers a voice on the job and improvecommunication between workers and management. Without unions, dayto day competitive pressures leave quitting as the only option for workersto address serious problems.
Unions are good for democracy. They give workers a voiceon the job and in politics, and have been essential to the passageof some of the most important legislation of the past 100 years.
