Teaching Resource Collection: How to find educationresourcesClaire Mol loy and P aul ine van der Laan July 2008

    UG EDU005

    Introduction

The Library offers a number of services that can help students carrying out school experience. Though

some resources are electronic, some are hard copy. Many of these physical items are held in the

Teaching Resource Collection (TRC) on Floor 1 of Queen Mother Library. Details of how to use the

resources of the Collection and the Library Catalogue are in the following guide.

    TRC personal shopper

Pauline van der Laan, our Teaching Resource Assistant, is responsible for all aspects of the TRC. She is

available, by appointment, to show you around the TRC and help you make best use of the resources. Soif you would like a personal tutorial before you go on placement please contact Pauline van der Laan,

Floor 1 Office, Queen Mother Library (QML), [email protected] for an appointment. Alternatively

contact the Information Consultant for Education, Claire Molloy, Floor 1, [email protected].

The Teaching Resource Collection is an area for quiet educa t iona l s t udy and group discussion.

AudioPODs: There is an AudioPOD (for your iPOD) available all about the TRC from:

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/library/audiopods.shtml#resources You can hear Pauline and

Claire tell you all about the resources. You can also access this from a computer.

What you can find in the Teaching Resource Collection

The Teaching Resource is a collection of more than 20,000 items consisting of childrens books and school

textbooks for all ages, ranging from pre-school to sixth year secondary level. We have many books which

can be used for project or topic work in the primary school, subject specific material for secondary use,

as well as a collection of childrens fiction. There are subject guides and arrangements for secondary

subjects. We also hold a large collection of non-book material including kits (collections of materials on a

particular topic, for example we have an inflatable solar system for demonstration purposes, Heinemann

Maths packs teacher and pupil books, workbooks etc. puppets, an organ apron and much more!) DVDs

(and videos) CDs, CD-ROMs, school prospectuses, project journals, big books and dual language books.

    The Kits

The kits are arranged in four general subject areas: Science and Technology, Maths, Language and

Literature and Social Subjects. We organise them according to Kit Number:

Kit Numbering Each kit has its own k number and they are arranged in this k number sequence

    within the subject areas:

Social Subjects have kit numbers starting with 2000, so 2001, 2002, 2003 and so on. Science and Technology have kit numbers starting with 3000 Language and Literature have kit numbers starting with 4000 Maths have kit numbers starting with 5000

All kits are listed by title on the Library catalogue and you can find kits by topic by using the Teaching

Resource Subject Search (we tell you more about this later under finding the item). The catalogue also

lists the contents of each kit.

Loan Period - All kits are borrowable for seven weeks at a time, with NO RECALL. This means if a kit

is on loan and you wish to borrow it you will have to press the Request button on the Library Catalogueto place a hold on it. You will then get to borrow the item at the end of its current loan period. Please

note this is very different to other items in the TRC and in the Main Library. We introduced this special

loan period to make it easier to take the kits out on placement with you. There is no recall so that you

wont have to worry about posting a heavy kit back from school, but you do only get the item for seven

weeks so please make sure when borrowing that this will cover your placement dates. You can renew

once as long as there is no hold (no one else has reserved) on the item.

    Specific subjects items of interest

Maths in the Maths kit section we have most of the Scottish Heinemann Maths Complete Packs, (numbers 1-

7, ages 5-12), comprising a teaching file in ring binder, a teaching resource book, an organising and planning

guide, a textbook, an extension textbook, an assessment book, and an answer book.

Science and Technology in the Science and Technology kit section we have great resources such as the

Water Cycle Simulator. The base is designed to represent the ocean, mountains and a mountain lake,

with various rivers. The ocean can be filled with salt water, covered, and heated with a lamp to produce

evaporation and condensation, which falls as rain and fills the mountain lake with fresh water. Ice in the

    cloud compartment assists the process.

Language and Literacy in the Language and Literacy kit section we have resources such as Wellington

Square Level 3 (ages 7-11) which is designed to meet the needs of children who are having difficulty in

learning to read. It provides straightforward progression through all 5 levels of the scheme, from

wordless picture books to storybooks with full-text. Wellington Square widens your pupils' reading

experience through imaginative and stimulating support material. It is ideal for group and guided reading

with a high interest level, low reading age.

Social Subjects in the Social Subject kit section we have a variety of different resources such as the

Religious Artefact kits. The Buddhist Set, for example, has seven offering bowls, one butter lamp, a

Buddha, an incense burner, and a packet of incense sticks.

Finding Kits You can use the Library Catalogue to help you find all the materials in the TRC,

including the Kits. See the section below about Finding TRC Materials. They are shelved in the

left hand part of the TRC.

    Dual language materials

We have lots of different dual language books in English with Polish, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, Arabic,

Bengali, Urdu and Korean. These include fiction titles such as Handas Surprise and Elmers Day as well

as non-fiction books such as Arab and English Words for School Use, Voices from Sudan and Oxford

    Picture Dictionary English/Korean.

Finding Dual Language books You can use the catalogue to help you find this kind of

material. Do an Alphabetical Browse search and select Teaching Resource Subject from the

drop down menu. Then type dual language texts as your search. You will get a complete list of

the titles that fall into this category. They are shelved in a separate section in the TRC to the

right when you come into the room!

    Big book collection

A variety of storybooks as well as non-fiction items are held in big format. These are great in that they

are colourful and large enough to hold open in front of a class of children. Most of these items are for

primary school age. They include titles such as Shompa lives in India and the Golden Rule Series titles:

We Listen, We Dont Interrupt and We Are Honest, We Dont Cover Up The Truth as well as storybookssuch as Giraffes Cant Dance and The Pied Piper of Hamelin. You can also borrow a big book stand for use

in the classroom these are stored alongside the big book collection.

Finding Big Books You can use the catalogue to help you find big books. Do an Advanced

Keyword search and type big book in the first box. You will get a complete list of the big books.

They are shelved in a separate section in the TRC to the right when you come into the room.

Please note that some of the Big Books are part of subject kits and therefore held in the kitpart of the TRC where we have put them in plastic hanging files on a free standing unit.

    Educational puppets

The Teaching Resource Collection holds a number of educational, ethnically varied puppets of both

genders and representing differing ages. These are useful for a variety of purposes making it easier to

explain difficult topics to young children, or for pupil use, in order to get them to explain feelings through

play. They are borrowable, but please note, great care will need to be taken when borrowing these items.

They are colourful and likely to be very popular among young children! The large puppets can be found in

the Social Subjects area of the kit collection on the free standing unit. You will also find a variety of hand

and finger puppets within the Kit collection such as the woodland finger puppets at K3084.

Materials for those with additional support needs

We hold some items that are aimed at those with particular reading needs such as those with English asan additional language, those with special and inclusive needs and reluctant readers. Many of the items

are for use with older children with special reading or writing needs, in other words they are books with

an older subject matter but written in a more easy to comprehend way, rather than early years materials

aimed at early years issues. There are kits such as Wellington Square and Zoom! and books such as

Extreme Survival and the Dark Man Series of books by Peter Lancett.

Finding Materials for those with Special Reading Needs - You can use the Library Catalogue to

find this material. Do an Alphabetical Browse search and select Teaching Resource Subject

from the drop down menu. Then type remedial readers as your search (sorry, this is the

current official library subject heading). You will get a complete list of the titles that fall into

this category. Please note that they are not in a separate section but placed with other items in

    the same subject area.

    Project journals

Journals published by Scholastic and others in this collection are taken especially for their value in project

work. They are aimed at primary level. Titles include Child Education, Infant Projects, Nursery Education,

Junior Education, Junior Focus, Literacy Time 3-4, Literacy Time 5-7, Numeracy Time, Art and Craft, and

Teaching and Learning. Each issue contains items such as posters and a project file devoted to a single topic,

photocopiable handouts etc. and give useful ideas for cross-curricular activities. For some titles we have

duplicate copies from the late 1980s to 2001. Since 2001 however, there will only be one copy of each issue.

Finding topics in the Project Journals - You can use the Library Catalogue to find the titles of the

journals. To find which issue has articles about what topic use Ideas for Projects which is produced

periodically by the Library. It is in a blue folder at the start of the journals and is alphabetical by subject.

    School prospectuses

These guides, produced by schools, are available for most primary and secondary schools in North East

Scotland, as well as for some schools in many other parts of the country. They are particularly useful for

students prior to going on school experience as a source of information about the schools they will be

visiting. Please contact us if we do not currently hold the school prospectus you wish to see. These are

borrowable but only for 24 hours at a time.

Many schools now have their own websites. ParentZone www.parentzonescotland.gov.uk/ has a

searchable database of all schools in Scotland with links to their websites (see useful links and find out

about your school on the right hand side of the home page). It also has a list of the school term dates for

    each local authority.

    HMI school inspection reports

Each school in Scotland is regularly inspected to make sure it is meeting current expected standards. HMI

School Inspection Reports for nursery, primary and secondary can be found at www.hmie.gov.uk/

Standard Grade, Access and Higher Still materials

We hold material in the library to help you with preparing to teach exam level courses. We have Subject

Guides and Higher Still Support materials (in paper format and on CD-ROM) as well as various textbooks.

Apart from the CD-ROMs, these materials are all held with other items at the same subject in order to

help you locate all the material on your topic. For example, books on Higher Chemistry and Chemistry

exams will be found in the TRC book collection at 540.076 alongside other general chemistry books.

    CD-ROMS

The Teaching Resource Collection holds a number of CD-ROMs for you to borrow. (Some are for reference

use and cannot be borrowed from the Library but instead used on the PC in the TRC it has a copy card

enabled printer attached). They cover a variety of subjects at primary and secondary level including

printable resources for modern languages, health and science, as well as Higher Still Arrangement

materials. The CD-ROMs are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal System in the left hand part of the

TRC next to the CD-ROM PC.

    Music CDs

We have a small collection of CDs in the TRC shelved according to the Dewey Decimal System. See

    Finding the Item.

    Videos and DVDs

We have a large selection of videos and DVDs in the TRC, shelved according to the Dewey Decimal

System (see Finding the Item) in subject order for both use with pupils and for professional development

purposes. We have History titles such as the How We Used To Live Victorian series, the World was War

and the Learning and Teaching Scotland Holocaust Teaching Packfor both primary and secondary

schools; Science and Health titles on recycling, water and health and food; and titles on behaviour

management and teaching and learning styles.

Finding videos and DVDs - You can use the Library Catalogue to help you find all the materials

in the TRC, including the videos and DVDs. See the section below about Finding TRC Materials.

They are shelved in the left hand part of the TRC near the Kits.

    Books and pictures

In the right hand part of the TRC you will find the main book collection shelved according to Dewey

(see Finding the Item) in subject order. Here you will find school texts books, story books, fiction, poetry,

books on Science, Maths, Music, RME, History etc. All these titles are for school age or contain

photocopiable resources and class ideas for use by you in school. You will also find pictures that you can

borrow, shelved in special cabinets in Dewey subject order. The two metal cabinets house the Large

pictures and the wooden drawer cabinet house the Small pictures. The Library catalogue entry for each

item tells you whether it is a large or small picture.

Finding books and pictures. You can use the Library Catalogue to help you find all the materials

in the TRC, including the books and pictures. See the section below about Finding TRC

Materials. They are shelved in the right hand part of the TRC.

    Loan periods

Unlike the kits, which have a seven week loan period with no recall, all books, pictures, videos and

project journals are borrowable as normal for the academic year (normally early June) unless recalled

by another borrower. Dont forget books and other materials, (except for Kits) which are out on loan from

the Teaching Resource Collection can be recalled using the library catalogue just like other items.

    Finding TRC materials

The Library Catalogue can be used to help find all materials not just those in the TRC. The Teaching

Resource Subject Index is particularly useful for finding material for use on placement. As well as

having general subject entries it includes subject entries for fiction in the Teaching Resources Collection.

For example, storybooks about bears can be found by entering Bears: fiction as the search term. The

Subject Index also includes music topic entries. For example, music which has animals as a theme can be

found by entering as a search term: Animals: music.

Click on Alphabetical Browse. From the Select index to browse drop down menu select Teaching Resource

Subject, then in the type word, phrase or number box type your search. This can be used to search for

materials in the Teaching Resource Collection. Entering any term leads to a list of subjects, which can

then be browsed for suitable headings. For example, entering Egypt will produce:

    Egypt: ancient history

    Egypt: fiction

    Egypt: geography

    Egypt: music

together with the number of titles which can be found at each heading.

You will see a list of all the items in the teaching collection that have Egypt (for example) somewhere in

their subject classification. This includes videos, books, music and multimedia. Please note, that not all of

the material will be held in the Teaching Resource Collection. Items that have a broader appeal may be

held elsewhere. See Finding the Item.

  • 8/14/2019 ugedu005

    6

Limiting your search is also useful, so you just look for material of a particular format for example

Videos and DVDs. Select Advanced Keyword search type in your keyword(s), for example, behaviour

management then from the limit box at the bottom of the screen select video and dvd click go to get a

list of Videos and DVDs about behaviour management.

    Finding the item

For books, the shelf mark on the holdings record (found by clicking on All items) indicates where the item

is shelved. When you click on All items in the Library Catalogue you will be taken to the holdings record

which will tell you the shelf mark and location of the item. The Teaching Resource Collection uses a

slightly different system of class or shelf mark than the rest of Queen Mother Library. We use numbers

and letters such as 823 F23, whereas the rest of the library would use something like 823.52 FEN.

Books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification system, just like the rest of QML - it is just the

suffix that is different. The main classes are as follows:

000 General works 500 Sciences and Maths

    100

    150

    Philosophy, including

    Psychology

    600
