UGITECHStainless steel solutions for the oil and gas industry
Ugitech and the Oil and Gas industry The world’s conventional oil reserves are seriously decreasing
and this trend is bound to become more acute. Consequently, oil and gas companies are focusing increasingly on
subsea exploration and overcoming the technical issues to exploiting unconventional liquid sources like oil sands, heavy and
extraheavy oils. As oil and gas companies rise to new challenges, the choice of materials is a critical issue. Ugitech, as a major world specialist in the manufacture of stainless steel long products for over 100 years, provides tailormade solutions to meet customers most technical demands.

AUSTENITIC (Chloride
Concentration <50mg/l )
Martensitic gradesMartensitics are limited to pH higher than 3,5 and in some exceptions higher than 4,5 (wellhead, Xmas trees, etc.)
Austenitic gradesAustenitics are limited in temperature (up to 60°C). They can be used up to 15 psia with no chloride concentration limit, or even until up to 50 psia H2S in case the Cl- concentration is less than 50 mg/l. One exception is the UGI 209, which has a little higher temperature limit (up to 66°C) for use in any equipment or components. Moreover this grade has almost twice higher mechanical properties than the other austenititic grades.
Duplex gradesThey should not be used at temperatures higher than 232°C. These grades are divided into two sections: those with a PREN between 30 and 40 (45N) are limited in H2S pressure up to 1.5 psia, those with a higher PREN (52N+) can be used up to 3 psia.
Super austenitic gradesThe highest partial pressure of H2S can withstand the superaustentitic grades. The utilization limits depends on temperature; the higher the temperature, the lower the pH2S limit. The 1.4529 is cited as an individual alloy and shall be used up to 121°C, up to 100 psia H2S with 60 700 mg/l chloride if the pH is higher than 3.5
H2S utilization limits for different stainless steel families – General Use PREN : the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number is developed to reflect and predict the pitting resistance of Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA) in the presence of dissolved chloride. It’s based upon the proportions of Cr, Mo, W, N in the composition of the alloy.

The mechanical properties are minimum guaranteed normative values. Nonetheless, they can be different depending on the product dimensions and production conditions.
Pitting corrosion resistance regarding Yield Strength
Martensitic gradesGrades with high mechanical properties adjustable by heat treatment and with, for some of them (630 or 4418), PREN similar or higher than Austenitics’.
Austenitic gradesGrades with a large range of pitting corrosion resistance, however with somewhat lower mechanical properties.
Super austenitic gradesAustenitic grades with much better pitting corrosion resistance, chemical composition closed to Ni base Alloys.
Duplex gradesLarge range of PREN up to super austenitic but with higher mechanical properties.
Technical data sheets are available for each grade on request.
