»»»»»»»» Raydon’s Unstabilized Gunnery Trainers are modular commercial-off (COTS) solutions for

individual and crew gunnery training. Developed to provide focused and effective gunnery training while meeting time and budget constraints, the UGTs are easy to move, easy to use, and reconfigurable into multiple variations.

The acquisition of gunnery skills requires time and repetition. With that in mind, Raydon has developed a family of gunnery trainers to help gain proficiency and efficiency. Training the gunner is time consuming. It is necessary to train the gunner prior to engaging in crew training. Our studies show that an extra two hours of individual gunner training streamlines training of the three-member crew down to an average time to proficiency of three hours. This common-sense breakthrough frees up crew training resources and improves the overall quality and efficiency of the training.

FEATURES

* Transportable: Packs into rugged, wheeled cases (two-man lift)

W UGT–I * Individual Gunnery

hen training combat vehicle gunnery, there is a common

challenge that many trainers and crews face. Drivers and Command- ers are already familiar with the basic operation of a vehicle and its equipment; their training focuses primarily on combat engagement tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) and communication protocols.

Vehicle Gunners, however, have to become familiar with a unique weapon — the mounted machine gun (MMG). They must learn how to operate the weapon and the turret, while also learning combat engage- ment TTP and proper crew commu- nication. The extra time needed to learn these additional tasks increas- es the overall training time for the entire crew and can have a potential negative effect on live-fire evalua- tions and qualification rates.

The Unstabilized Gunnery Trainer - Individual (UGT-I) provides vehicle Gunners a mechanism to develop these skills. The UGT-I system combines simulated weapons and a unique adaptive learning curricu- lum based on the TC 3-20.31 “Training & Qualification, Crew” standards to provide efficient training for mounted Gunners in preparation for crew live-fire training and evaluation.

Head-Mounted Display Full-Function Crew Station

UGT–I Advanced Fidelity Gunner Station The UGT-I modular trainer is a rugged, easily transportable training system for mounted machine gun training. The system includes features that replicate the vital functions needed for gunnery training and prepares the Gunner to function at full speed when crew training begins.

• High-fidelity Head-Mounted Display (HMD) with motion sensing, giving the Gunner the ability to survey the surroundings without rotating the turret.

• Binocular view integrated into the HMD.

Crew communication headset interacts with synthetic crew members using voice recognition software. Simulated radio, tactical headset, and boom microphone with intercom and push-to-talk functionality.

Universal Weapons Mount Pintle and cradle mount allows easy installation of interchangeable simulated weapons

T&E Mechanism Mil-Spec Traverse and Elevation (T&E) mechanism to support the fine adjustments needed for precision aiming

Turret Rotation Three virtual turret rotation options: • Simulated power joystick • Simulated manual turret crank • Pressure-activated foot platform

Modular The UGT-I system is stored and transported in rugged, two-man lift, ready-to-ship boxes, allowing the system to be positioned in the most advantageous locations -- wherever and whenever it is

Proven Effective * Recognizing Excellence Raydon’s UGT training curriculum was formally recognized when it was called out specifically in the Army’s Training Circular 3-20.31, “Training & Qualification, Crew.” It has been proven effective at meeting unit training objectives and improving Q1 rates.

Average time to proficiency is a loaded term. First, it tells you that the training has been studied and tested. Second, it indicates that the training is consistently successful to a level of proficiency. And third, it gives you a firm basis to plan training throughput and capacity requirements – and a firm basis to compare competitors’ products.

Average time to proficiency for UGT-I is two hours; for a crew on UGT-C, an additional three hours. That means you can train a crew to proficiency in five clock hours, or 11 man-hours. Note: it takes longer to train on the MK 19.

Comprehensive Training Progression The UGT training content provides an array of individual and crew unstabilized gunnery training capabilities to progressively build combat skills. The sequencing, or layering on, of skill development exercises is key to an effective training solution. Raydon has developed an expertise in the human science of learning that informs our training scenarios.

Repetition Raydon introduced the UGT products as portable systems to increase sets and reps and make them available anywhere, because increased repetitions drill in skills and make them stick longer.

Compressed Training Program Time available to train is a problem, so we developed a unique Compressed Training Program (CTP). The standard UGT software package includes a CTP for each of the supported weapons (M2, M240B and MK19), offering the option to accelerate training and improve the efficient use of available time.

The CTP provides task skill training in a Mounted Machine Gun (MMG) vehicle based on TC 3-20.31, “Training & Qualification, Crew.” It gives a student gunner the opportunity to fire a high volume of target engagements using a progressive training methodology. The CTP is designed for an intermediate user who is already familiar with the basic function of the weapons. The curriculum includes Pre-Live Fire and evaluation exercises, culminating in a Gunnery Table II (GT II) virtual Gate-to-Live-Fire (GTLF) evaluation exercise. Individual scenarios are based on Gunnery Table tasks and Required Performance Measures (RPMs) and are evaluated according to the current training doctrine. After each scenario, Raydon’s training management software automatically displays the appropriate score sheet and crew rollup, and automatically provides crew cuts identifying any training deficiencies. The Crew Score Sheet is modeled after DA Form 8265, and the Crew Roll Up Sheet is modeled after DA Form 8265-1 (both dated March 2015).

UGT–C Crew Training

Raydon’s UGT-C crew gunnery trainer includes the UGT-I for a Gunner seat and introduces Driver and Commander seats to the training regimen. Crew exercises focus on progressive exercises using a crawl-walk-run methodology to introduce new Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs). The curriculum builds crew cohesion by involving each crew member in the direct-fire engagement process. The software package includes a crew gunnery curriculum for each of the supported weapons (M2, M240B and MK19), and includes Pre-Live Fire and Gunnery Table exercises, culminating in a GT II virtual GTLF evaluation.

Table II Evaluation Under the requirements of TC 3-20.31, Table II (Simulations) is designed to evaluate a crew’s ability to engage stationary and/or moving targets from a stationary or moving vehicle under normal or limited visibility conditions. Crews are required to complete Table II prior to participation in any live-fire event. UGT is listed in TC 3-20.31 as a Primary Simulation System for Pintle Mounted MMG training and is approved to meet Table II training and evaluation requirements to qualify for live-fire training.

Review and Scoring Instructor/Operators can manually input crew cuts for review after each scenario. The crew will then repeat the exercise or evaluation to improve the marked deficiencies until a passing score is achieved. Crew Gunnery Roll-Up Sheets are automatically generated and are aligned with crew evaluation standards in TC 3-20.31. The Crew Score Sheet is modeled after DA Form 8265, and the Crew Roll-Up Sheet is modeled after DA Form 8265-1 (both dated March 2015).
