UH Department of Educational Psychology Annual Report

Volume 3 Spring 2012 (calendar year 2011)

The third edition of the EPSY annual report acknowledges the diverse contributions of our current faculty and students during the 2011 calendar year. These contributions support the Carnegie Tier One research status of the University of Houston. The Annual Report also includes awards and recognitions afforded to our faculty and students by various organizations. As you peruse the contents, you will notice the report is organized according to the University of Houston progress card developed by President Renu Khator. The Annual Report includes the following five sections:

• Progress Card Goal 1: Nationally Competitive Research (begins with a graph of EPSY peer reviewed journal publications and grant activity over the last six years)

• Progress Card Goal 2: Student Success • Progress Card Goal 3: Community Engagement • Progress Card Goal 5: Local and National Recognition • Progress Card Goal 6: Competitive Resources

If you have any questions or comments about the progress card or the report please let me know. Dr. Thomas Kubiszyn, Chair

Progress Card Goal #1 Nationally Competitive Research

In addition to helping fulfill the University’s mission by generating and disseminating knowledge, faculty research publications, presentations, and grant expenditures all help elevate the department’s national visibility and support our Carnegie Tier One research status. The graphs below illustrate the Department’s increased focus on journal publications and grant productivity in recent years. Specific citations follow these graphs. The first graph in each set represents the total numbers produced by the department each year. However, due to recent change in the number of faculty members contributing to our department totals (2009 = 24 FTE, 2010 = 31 FTE, 2011 = 21 FTE), we have included additional graphs which better represent the productivity of our faculty. The second graph in each set shows a ratio of the yearly totals divided by the number of faculty members contributing each year.

Progress Card Goal #2 Student Success

(References with faculty as coauthors also appear in Progress Card Goal 1: Nationally Competitive Research). Graduate students contribute strongly to our Tier One research productivity through publications, presentations and grant support. Ongoing engagement of students with faculty in publishing and presenting is instrumental to their continued engagement and success in our programs. The visibility provided by these scholarly activities also enhances our overall student recruitment, retention and completion initiatives, which in turn will lead to an increase in the number of graduate students who enroll in and complete our graduate and Ph.D. programs. Because undergraduates students are increasingly engaged in research activities with faculty and doctoral students, undergraduate retention and completion may also be enhanced.

Progress Card Goal #3 Community Advancement

To enhance community advancement our programs strive to maintain high levels of bilateral community engagement. We have established numerous community-based practicum sites in which our students deliver clinical services under the supervision of licensed health care professionals, in collaboration with university faculty supervisors. In some cases, these relationships have enabled the development of collaborative research endeavors with our community partners, and these projects typically include a strong community application emphasis. Many of our faculty are also active in the local community through various activities such as volunteer efforts and media engagements. Through these assorted community based activities our faculty are able to contribute to our community while also identifying potential research opportunities and recruiting undergraduate and graduate students that have interests that align with our programs.
