Radium Girls: In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.

The True Story of the Radium Girls: The Radium Girls were a group of female factory workers who contracted radia-tion poisoning from painting watch dials with glow-in-the-dark paint at the United States Radium factory in Orange, New Jersey around 1917. The women, who had been told the paint was harmless, ingested deadly amounts of radium by licking their paintbrushes to sharpen them; some also painted their fingernails with the glowing substance.

Five of the women challenged their employer in a court case that established the right of individual workers who contract occupational diseases to sue their employers

A Note From Our Booster Club President:

As we enter into the spring, BHS Theatre has not slowed down. We are in the middle of all our Studio and Theatre II class shows. We had a great turn out for our first group of shows—Studio class productions of Steel Magnolias and Dearly Departed, and The Twits one of Theatre II’s shows. Congratulation to the Cast, Crew and Directors for all of the shows, all were incredible. Watch for details on the final three shows coming this month. This year has been very successful. Our students entertained us and our boosters and parents made our club efforts rewarding. As a booster club we will finalize our year by electing our board for the 2010-2011 school year. It is our desire to add some new members to our team. I can person-ally say that working with the Theatre Boosters has been a tremendous ex-perience and consider it an honor to work with such a great group of indi-viduals. If you are interested in serving our Theatre students through a po-sition on our board or as a committee member, please contact me via email at [email protected]. Go Stage Hawks!
