Selecting the best schoolAsk the experts for help and advice when selecting the ‘best’ school for your child. Although boarding schools appear similar when browsing the web or through prospectuses, in reality each has a unique quality.
Our job as Education Consultants is to identify and match your child’s individual talents, skills and aspirations to a school that will challenge, encourage and develop, to ensure that each child reaches his or her full potential. The purpose and aim of the Education Consultant who specialises in school placement is to work on behalf of the family, to offer help and guidance in the selection of the ‘best’ school
for their child. The education of each and every child is one of the most important decisions we make, time spent in early exploration and research is wise. Families living overseas are looking for reassurance that their children will achieve their full potential, in a happy, safe, secure environment. Working closely with an Education Consultant for the purpose of school selection should follow the process outlined below:
PLAN EARLY
1. Early planning is advisable, allow at least 18 months.
2. Ask questions and identify the type of educational environment that would best suit the needs of your child; is it to be co-educational or a single sex school, highly selective or more suitable for the ‘all rounder’.
3. Do you have any special requirements? i.e. Dyslexia, medical condition, learning or physical difficulties, intensive English language provision.
4. Do you require the school to be in any particular area of the UK?
5. Have copies of the child’s School Reports available.
6. Inform the child’s present school of your intentions; the Principal will be required to supply a reference.
7. Be clear about, if and when, you are able to visit the schools selected.
WHAT TO EXPECT
1. The Education Consultant selects schools that best meet the agreed criteria, for your consideration.
2. The Education Consultant will arrange for the school prospectuses to be sent to the family.
3. The Education Consultant should be available to discuss the benefits of each school selected and generally answer parent’s questions.
4. It is advisable to make appointments to visit 3 or 4 schools. To see the school in action is important, parents are advised to visit in term time whenever possible.
UK SCHOOLS DIRECTORY 2019/206
If English is not your first languageUK Boarding Schools offer first class English language teaching and have a great deal of experience in helping students, whose first language is not English, to improve their language skills.
The EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Department in schools and colleges offer the overseas student a warm welcome; they have an important role to play in helping the international student successfully integrate and understand the excitement and challenges of boarding life.
International Study Centres have specifically designed pre-boarding and pre- A Level/IB courses; their aim is to ensure that the student’s English is of a sufficient level to enable them to cope with the GCSE and A Level/IB examinations.
A Summer School provides an excellent introduction to the UK, offering English language teaching and activities, such as sports, art, drama and outdoor activities; a fun way to improve your English.
Learning Support We can recommend schools with excellent learning support for children with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADHD as well as specialist schools for children with Asperger's Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy, deaf children and young people who have complex learning issues.
State Boarding SchoolsAdmission to state boarding in the UK is limited to British citizens, EU passport holders and anyone with a right of residence in the UK.
At state boarding schools you pay for the boarding only and the tuition is paid by the government, as it would at any other state school in England.
A Guardian FamilyIt is a requirement of schools for all parents resident outside the UK to appoint a Guardian living in Britain, who will act with their full authority. The choice of Guardian is the responsibility of the parents.
The ‘Guardian’ acts on behalf of the parent, providing a home from home environment at half term and weekend exeats, they represent the parents at school functions and are available in case of an emergency.

Foundations for life: an all-round education at a UK Boarding SchoolAtolani joined his UK boarding school in Gloucestershire a few years ago as a nervous, shy young boy from his prep school in Lagos.
Last Saturday in a packed hall I watched his Speech Day. Having grown now in stature and in confidence, this young man was called up for numerous academic and sporting prizes. Atolani is being widely tipped as a potential head of school.
Why do so many West African families choose UK boarding schools?
An all-round education – There are many exceptional British and international schools that I work with across West Africa that deliver excellent results.
However, what they would all agree with is that they can’t fully compete with the
opportunities and facilities of leading UK boarding schools that enrich the curriculum to instil confidence, resilience and leadership skills.
Fulfilling academic potential – Small classes, outstanding teachers, superb resources – these are some of the reasons that ‘value-added’ results are so high in the UK independent sector.
In terms of reporting on progress, schools keep in close contact with parents through regular reports and proactive communication from form tutors and house parents.
British values in an international community – Some schools cherish a heritage going back more than 1,000 years while others are more recently established. However, what they have in common is a traditional British ethos, high expectations and a gold standard of education.
For Atolani, and his sister Jenrola who follows in his footsteps to the UK this September, these solid British foundations will set them up for life.
Mark Brooks – Education Consultant.
UK SCHOOLS DIRECTORY 2019/208
schoolfocus Boarding in the UKSending children to boarding school is a big decision for any family, but parents in West Africa are increasingly recognising the significant benefits and opportunities that come from a British education.
At its best, a modern British boarding school offers an all-round education that develops the whole person. It provides outstanding pastoral care and support as staff set clear boundaries and high expectations while nurturing self-esteem and self-reliance which enables pupils to go out into the wider world with confidence.
A recent UK Boarding School Association (BSA) report showed that confidence and independence were the two most frequently mentioned attributes to result from boarding - both vital qualities in the competitive world of university and work.
The UK has a long tradition of boarding and this has led to the highest standards in pastoral care. All good schools are members of the BSA and are regularly inspected by an independent body to ensure these standards are maintained. This provides great reassurance to parents considering a boarding education for their children.
If you are considering sending your son or daughter to the UK to board, when you start to draw up your shortlist of schools, consider if the values of the school fit with your own. For example, respect for others, kindness and good old-fashioned manners are key to life
at many schools. Your child will spend their formative years being shaped by these values so it’s critical that you support them.
Beyond academic results and facilities, every school is built on a different ethos so it’s important to understand what this is and how it manifests itself through daily life at school.
Take time to go through the School’s website and the UK Boarding School Directory – West Africa. Many enquiries come from recommendations from existing or past parents – talk to your own network to find out about their experiences of different schools.
I would always encourage parents to visit a few schools – not so easy when you live far away but it really pays to take the time to see what is on offer and what suits your family best.
When visiting, do try to visit on a normal working day – it will provide a much more accurate picture of how you will find the school on any term-time day. If a school offers weekly boarding, check how many pupils are in at the weekend – you don’t want to your child boarding at a school which is empty at the weekend.
UK SCHOOLS DIRECTORY 2019/20 9
Most schools will have amazing facilities, but the most important thing is the atmosphere – do the pupils look happy? Do teachers engage with the classes? Is anyone having any fun?
I am often asked how much input children should have in the selection process. For Sixth Form, certainly, they should have significant input but, for younger children, it really should be driven by parents who are the best judge of where their children will be happy. Children need to see the School but a ten-year-old will be more impressed by the size of the tuck shop than the range of GCSE subjects available!
Some suggestions for when you visit…
üü ask a pupil to describe a typical day so that you understand the balance between academic and extra-curricular activities and the practicalities of how pupils move around the site
üü find out about the structure of pastoral care. How are pupils split into smaller groups, who will you have most regular contact with?
üü clarify practical points such as entrance criteria and how selective the admissions process is. Also query the fee structure – is everything included or are there extra charges for trunk storage, laundry, text books, art materials or international pupils…
Every school is unique and only you and your family can tell which is the best fit for your children but doing the right research and asking the right questions can help enormously.
Good luck!
Joanna Sagers – Director of Admissions and Marketing at Dauntsey’s.

studentfocus You are surrounded by intellectual students and it has made me go the extra mileI have found Cardiff Sixth Form College boarding to be really lovely, I love sport and play football, basketball and volleyball here and really enjoy the inter-house competitions we have.
I also go swimming and to the gym. Every Friday my friends and I watch movies and eat pizza in the common room which is really fun and we go into town at the weekends. The staff have made things really easily available for us and are always there to talk to. Some weekends we have gone out and taken part in activities such as Go-Karting, the Escape Room and Paintballing and I always use the weekends to catch up on homework and sleep!
I have so enjoyed the teaching here and it is different to what I experienced in Nigeria.
The practical science lessons are my favourite where we do lots of experiments and work together to figure out how and why reactions take place. In addition, the careers department have given me lots of individual support. They organise external speakers to come and talk to us about a range of topics, explain in detail how to apply to university and even have brought our alumni back to explain what studying engineering at university is like. As I want to be an electrical engineer this was really helpful!
For me the difference at Cardiff has been that I now completely understand what I am taught. I often used to rely on cramming in Nigeria but I now read around my subjects, research online and listen to podcasts so I feel I am much better prepared for university. You are surrounded by intellectual students and it has made me go the extra mile.
Although it is a very academic college, it is actually really fun. The College has a real mixture of students and some real personalities. I have found it really easy to make friends and there is no bad behaviour here - you can talk to anyone. I not only have friends from Nigeria but also from Malaysia, UK and Hong Kong for example.
I love the diversity. I met my first friend playing basketball and now we are all one big family.
Shaakir – Boarder at Cardiff Sixth Form College.

I love boarding because of the sense of communityI chose to come to England to study as my parents had experienced about 20 years of life in England; we all chose Dean Close particularly because as Christians, we wanted a school that valued our faith for what it is and since my parents’ jobs involve quite a bit of travelling, boarding was always the only option (I’ve never had one regret though).
I know this may sound overrated but I love boarding because of the sense of community you are blessed with when you’re not around your usual environment, when I am at school I am leading such a different life to mine in Nigeria.
As a boarder, I usually eat with all my friends in the dining room during all mealtimes; activities vary all the time, depending on what is going around the world globally or what most members in the house want to do. My relationship with my housemistress
is extremely amiable; we have that sense of security and trust as she understands when I do need comforting or not. Being able to expressively showcase myself emotionally, academically as well as through sport has been one of the great opportunities I’ve been privileged enough to experience.
During my two years at Dean Close, I have been able to meet a wide variety of people and forged many new friendships. My relationships with my teachers is important and they have spent time with me on a personal level which I find very special.
Ayomide – Boarder at Dean Close School.

studentfocus As you progress through the boarding houses, you gain a lot more independenceMy name is Demi and I joined St Cat’s in the Sixth form. Joining St Cats was a thrilling yet terrifying experience as I came straight from Nigeria to the UK.
On one hand, coming from a British-curriculum school in Lagos, it was easy to understand the teaching style. I have to be responsible for managing my own time effectively and revising so I’m adequately prepared for exams. From a non-academic perspective, boarding
definitely gave me an advantage as I formed closer relationships in boarding - everyone has become my second family. I love how St Cats is internationally diverse and it’s been great meeting other Nigerians like Oge here who have made me feel more at home!
Hello, my name is Oge and I am Head Boarder. I joined St Cat’s in Year 9, and like Demi, I am currently in L6.
I can definitely say that I have enjoyed my boarding experience at St Cats and I will be very sad to leave next July. What I like about boarding is that as you progress through the boarding houses, you gain a lot more independence. Lower down, we would be allocated an hour and a half to do our prep in the library, but now, in Sixth Form, it is up to me to organise my time - it is great preparation for university! Another thing I have
grown to love about St Cats is the fact that we’re a boarding and day school. Even though of course, I have friends in day school, the bond we boarders have is truly special; we all know what it feels like to leave home and we all share similar experiences. One thing we all miss is of course, jollof rice!! But don’t worry, once a year we prepare a dinner for the whole of boarding, consisting of different Nigerian delicacies. Everyone loves it!

UK SCHOOLS DIRECTORY 2019/20 13
studentfocus Boarding at St George’s Ascot
I remember my first term in St George’s. I was 13 years old, fresh from Nigeria and the Lycée Français Louis Pasteur de Lagos.
I was so scared that I wouldn’t fit in or that the girls would not be welcoming. I was shocked by all the girls in my year, and even the year above, coming to say hi and wanting to get to know me.
St George’s has really helped with my confidence and English grammar since I came from a French-speaking school.
The school introduced me to so many new things such as netball, which I had never heard of, and now I am on the U18 netball team.
Omosigho – Lower Sixth (Year 12).
I joined St George’s in September 2017 and knew right away that I liked it.
The taster night that I had before joining was a great way to meet people and get
used to boarding. I was a bit shy at first, but I soon realised how nice everyone is and I made friends quickly.
Boarding at St George’s is a lot of fun.The boarding spaces are very private and the activities are entertaining.
Communicating with our families is really easy too as we have access to our phones in the evening. There are many leadership roles for girls and many things other than academics to learn, like confidence, tolerance, inclusivity and open-mindedness. I would definitely recommend joining St George’s.
Carmen – Fourth Year (Year 10).
I am currently in the Third Year (Year 9) at St George’s.
This year is very special for my year because we have our GCSE choices coming
up and we require a lot of advice. For an international student whose parents have not done GCSEs it can be hard, but the staff have helped me and given me advice that my parents could not have and I really appreciate it. Boarding is defined as “the arrangement according to which pupils live in school during term”, but to me boarding at St George’s is a home that is on school premises.
It is really fun, with activities in the evenings and weekends.
The boarding staff are more like parents than staff to us, and provide strong pastoral care and help us with our daily needs.
Joanna – Third Year (Year 9).
UK SCHOOLS DIRECTORY 2019/2014
studentfocus What makes Boarding School special is the fact that everyone is so nice and friendlyI think it is hard to find a school that has such loving people and that is one of the things that makes my school special. Pupils are pushed by teachers to perform to the best of their ability and teachers get to really understand the child and that enables the teacher to understand the way the person learns and how they approach things so that really helps in learning at Warminster School.
What the food and sport is like - the food is amazing at the School and we have a variety to choose from. I really like the food we get served each day. Sport is fantastic at the School and is dealt with seriously; we play matches against other schools almost every weekend and it is an amazing experience. It is nice that sport is taken with a passion and isn’t overshadowed by academic learning, as it is just as important as learning academically.
Highlights so far - One of my highlights so far at School was being able to play for the U14As rugby team, even though it was my first term of playing rugby. Another one of my highlights is being able to do tours, which is showing parents around the School. I feel like that is such a great experience as I am able to show parents what I love about the School. Another highlight was getting Confirmed
and being prepared by the school chaplain, Reverend Prescott. The service was really nice and it was at Salisbury Cathedral, which was an amazing place to get confirmed in.
How is the school different from my school in Nigeria? - The School is different from my school back in Nigeria in the aspect that co-curricular activities such as sport, music and drama etc are taken very seriously and there is a wider range of co-curricular clubs. At my school in Nigeria, it wasn’t regarded with as much importance and focus as it is here at Warminster School. We are taken on more excursions, which are fun and at the same time help learning a lot. We are also exposed to a lot more here than in my school in Nigeria, which helps us to be all-rounders.
Olumide – Boarder at Warminster School.

studentfocus Being a boarder at DallamOlaoluwa – a boarder in Year 12, says:
In the 6 years that I have been a boarder I can proudly say that I have made lifelong friendships.
Dallam was not what I expected at all. Coming to boarding school in the countryside was a scary experience, because it was my first time attending a boarding school and I’m a city boy. I did not expect there to be over 25 nationalities and cultures for me to get to know and understand better.
Being a boarder allows you to interact with people from different backgrounds at various age groups. Boarding offers many opportunities for activities during weekdays and weekends that boarders can get involved in and it has very good facilities both at school and in the boarding house. The boarding house has modern accommodation as well as tennis courts, a big playing field and its own sports hall where boarders can enjoy playing various sports and keeping active whatever the weather. The Boarding staff are really supportive and they encourage students of all ages to keep active and to try new things.
Being a boarder at Dallam has helped me gain many skills such as organisation, punctuality and being more independent.
Overall, I would definitely recommend boarding – it has been a great experience and has really helped me through my teenage years. When I leave I will really miss being part of this community and the benefits it has to offer, but I know it is preparing me well for my next step of going to university.
Seyliayo – a boarder in Year 12, says:
Living in a boarding school like this where community spirit is encouraged makes you feel like you have a second family and means you can really enjoy your experience.
The rural location of the boarding school means it’s quiet so it’s conducive to study, but if you’re adventurous you can make the most of your surroundings and go for a hike, for example.
You get lots of opportunities at Dallam.
The teaching staff strive to bring the best out in me. I have developed excellent teacher-student relationships and they encourage me to take part in activities like the Extended Experience, which is great for my UCAS personal statement. I get on well with the boarding staff and they have assisted me in working towards personal goals through a range of activities that have improved my self-sufficiency and independence in preparation for university.
During my time in boarding at Dallam I have learned to cultivate a positive mind-set and tackle challenges head on. From getting my academic work done to local volunteering to treating myself to a day in a local spa, I have also learned to find balance between work and play to become a better more well-rounded person.

“Dover College is a family. We eat together, pray together and stay together.”
Dover College is aco-educational school forpupils aged 3-18. We are located in a beautiful, historic site with easy access to Central London, the major airports and Eurostar terminals.
We see ourselves as a family and offer a warm welcome as well as exceptional pastoral care. This environment encourages high academic achievement, builds confidence and prepares pupils for adult life.
Under the leadership ofGareth Doodes, since 2015 the College has undergone a transformation, as pupil numbers have increased alongside receiving exemplary inspection reports. Recently, the school received an entirely independent Good Schools Guide Review which demonstrated the progress made and the extraordinary opportunitiesthat the College has.
Its summary was particularly fulsome in its praise. ‘Excellent value for money, something we don’t often say in our line of work; sending your child here will genuinely set them up. But also a place that is human in its outlook, healthy, kind, and vigorous in its quest for excellence. As one student put it, ‘I love it at this school, and I feel privileged to be here.’

Hurtwood House
“A feeling of wonder grabs you as you walk round the performing arts complex.”
(ISI) Independent SchoolsInspectorate Report
Hurtwood House is the only independent boarding school specialising exclusively in the Sixth Form.
It concentrates on the 16–18 age range and offers students a caring, residential structure and a commitment to a complete education where culture, sport, friendship and a full range of extra-curricular activities all play an important part. Hugely successful across the whole range of academic subjects,
Hurtwood House is also widely recognised as having the best Creative and Performing Arts and Media departments in the country and is therefore especially attractive to aspiring actors, directors, film directors, dancers, singers, artists and fashion designers.
Many students now want to leave the traditional school system at 16. They are seeking an environment which is structured and safe, but which
is less institutional and better equipped to provide the challenge and stimulation which they are now ready for, and which is therefore better placed to develop their potential. They also require teaching methods which will prepare them for an increasingly competitive world by developing their initiative and encouraging them to think for themselves.

“At The Oratory we offer an education that prepares our pupils for the world and truly sets them apart.”
The Oratory is an HMC Roman Catholic independent boarding and day school. From September 2020, The Oratory will become a co-educational school, welcoming girls and boys from the age of 11 to 18.
Established in 1859, we provide a first class traditional British boarding school experience. The majority of our pupils are from the UK so English is spoken all the time, therefore our international pupils get the very best of a British education in the UK.
Set on a large 100 acre country estate in the Oxfordshire
countryside, we offer the best of both worlds, easily accessible routes to London and major airports, yet breath-taking surroundings.
Despite being a broadly non-selective school, we have very high academic standards and are positioned in the top 3% of schools nationally for value-added at A Level.
However, an Oratory education is about developing our young people in a much wider sense than exam results alone can demonstrate. Being a vibrant boarding community our
weekends are as busy as the week with a packed programme of activities organised by our House families. Our pupils also enjoy a variety of cultural, sporting, and charitableactivities through ourco-curricular programme.
As a Catholic school that welcomes pupils of all faiths or none, visitors often comment on the inclusive family atmosphere of our school. We offer a nurturing educational environment where children can thrive in the stability of friends and teachers.
