4. The Background 2005 1999 1996 1994 5. What does 10 look like? 0 10 6. Were going to need a bigger 10! 7. The Course

  • 26 week course(9 contact days)
  • 3 days theoretical background and practice
  • 2 days practice, introduction of narrative approaches
  • 2 days practice, systemic and strategic approaches
  • 2 days practical assessment
  • 18 weeks practice and written assignment

8. The Study

  • This is the first academically accredited, degree level, course in SFBT in Scotland. Interest in the course was wide based and the course was fully subscribed.Initial feedback from students was extremely positive, with many stating that a follow up course would be desirable, and that they would recommend the existing course to colleagues.
  • In light of the unique nature of the course within Scotland it was suggested that a study of the impact of the course on students practice and attitude would be worthwhile.

9. The Study

  • It is possible that restructuring epistemologies is the real challenge of teaching solution focused brief therapy
  • Shilts and Thomas (2005)

10. The Study

  • Aim:
  • This brief study aims to discover how students who have completed the course perceive the course to have changed their practice, their personal thoughts in relation to therapeutic working, and their professional relationship with colleagues in the wider clinical setting.

11. The Study

  • The project intended to answer the following questions.
  • What impact do former students believe the SFBT course has had on their own practice?
  • What impact has the course had on the constructs through which they view the people using their services?
  • What impact has it had on their working relationships with colleagues?

12. The Study

  • A semi-structured interview, allowing the interviewer to respond to participants responses and develop emerging themes as appropriate.
  • Interviews were audio taped, transcribed and analysed using a qualitative analysis of the narrative data to identify particular experiences as instances of broader, shared conceptualisations and experience. Transcripts of narrative accounts were manually coded to reflect key events in the narrative and the significance the participant places on that, i.e. what happened and what it means.
  • Comparison of all narratives was then carried out to inductively create thematic groupings from the data

17. Solution Focused Brief Therapy

  • The Themes
  • Three minor themes
  • Eclectic use of approach
  • Use of language
  • Application in wider life

18. Trust in clients

  • I strive to learn from them (clients); what works for them, and I think this has strengthened my belief in them.
  • It influenced me, the way I view clients; what they bring.
  • Its easier to identify what theyre achieving; reinforcing gains, not patronising, but looking at detail. You start to appreciate what theyre doing.
  • The focus on the client, in their terms. Its the client who holds the keys.Thats something I can say to managers: Its the client who knows whats going to help them.

19. Positivity

  • Success builds on success. The first time you try it and you get a success, you think, Wow!.
  • Now I want the difficult cases.Im thinking, How are they still alive?Im far more interested in people.
  • I heard you talking about treating people in one session; other people maybe, not me!Psychiatry has its limits. Now, Im amazed when I do it in one session.
  • Positivity. It changes everything from negative to positive.Taking the mirror image.

20. Confidence

  • So having been on a course and hearing the rationale behind it has increased my confidence in the ability of SFT to be a valid approach.
  • Its changed my clinical practice, it gives direction to assessment.Helps to avoidred herrings .
  • It helped my confidence; I felt I had something to offer.Something different.I felt a lot more confident than I did in the ward.
  • It gives me more structure than I had before, I rarely feel out of my depth. The structure of the interview really helps.Just to know what the next question is.

21. Eclectic use of approach

  • Im adapting the approach for each persons personal situation. As I become more skilled in practice.
  • I have a free-flowing style, it allows me to adapt in and out; adapt other approaches to SFT.
  • I use elements of it with all clients, thats quite helpful.

22. Use of language

  • Theres something about the language. You start using the language and that changes your thinking. Its not the thinking that changes the language; its like a loop.
  • You internalise the language. All the time Im thinking in a different way.How do they manage? How do they do that?
  • If you ask different questions you get different answers. You move in a different way.

23. Application in wider life

  • Ive done courses before and come back and said, That was life changing, and it was.But it didnt even occur to me the extent to which this course would impact on my life.
  • It makes it easier in my personal life to deal with difficulties; its good to have an approach that you can use as a lifestyle choice. It gives you choices. Its something that you do to yourself.
  • What has changed since I started the course?Everything!

24. Final thoughts

  • Its a very creative approach,
  • its like soup; being surrounded
  • by idea soup.
  • Just opening up and
  • immersing yourself in
  • creative soup.

25. Final thoughts

  • I dont like the fixations
  • with negatives, with symptoms.
  • Taken to then th degree,
  • it doesnt deal with the pain
  • that people come with.
  • They define the problems.
  • People come with problems,
  • theyre not the problem.

26. Final thoughts

  • Peer supervision.
  • Clinical meeting.
  • Discharge someone?
  • Share disbelief.
