Board of Directors

Board Members

Message from the Music Director and Board President:

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate 36 years of bringing cultural enrichment and beautiful orchestral music to our community. Music transcends time, and compositions written years ago can evolve into classics—hence this season’s theme, “Timeless.”

This concert season also marks Les Pfutzenreuter’s 26th year as the Conductor and Music Director and Margie Salcedo Rice’s 31st year with the orchestra. The majority of our orchestra musicians have played in the symphony for more than a decade.

Our newest audience members may not be aware that the Ukiah Symphony Association depends on sponsors, donors, and advertisers to help bridge the gap between ticket sales and our expenses, which average $10,000-$18,000 per concert. We appreciate their making it possible for us to celebrate our 36th anniversary.

If you have not already done so, please consider a donation, sponsorship or endowment that will allow us to keep on providing symphonic music for anniversaries to come.

Please sit back and enjoy the season that we have planned for you!

MARGIE SALCEDO RICE, Assistant Conductor & Concertmaster

This year marks the 26th season that Les Pfutzenreuter has served as Music Director of the Ukiah Symphony. He has been Professor of Music at Mendocino College for the last 30 years. He leads the Masterworks Chorale, Ukiah Symphony and the Symphonic Band. He teaches Music History, Music Appreciation and coordinates the performance course sections. Pfutzenreuter is Music Director of the Philharmonia Healdsburg. He has appeared with the Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Orchestra, Raven Players in Healdsburg, Holy Names Orchestra in Oakland, Opera Fresca, Symphony of the Redwoods Pops and Children’s Concerts, Ukiah Civic Light Opera, Ukiah Players, Chico City Opera, and Santa Rosa Players.

Pfutzenreuter holds a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado where he studied with Dr. Howard Skinner, Music Director of the Greeley Philharmonic and Dean of the College of Performing Arts, and Eugene Corporon, now Director of Wind Activities at the University of Northern Texas. However, his musical training and philosophy is owed to his mentor, Professor John Colson, former Director of Orchestra and Brass Activities at South Dakota State University. There, Pfutzenreuter received his undergraduate education and was Musical Director for Prairie Repertory Theatre for six years.

In addition to conducting, Pfutzenreuter is a French horn player and vocalist, having performed in orchestras and on the stage.

Concertmaster and Assistant Conductor of the Ukiah Symphony, Margie is beginning her 31st season with the Ukiah Symphony. She began violin lessons at age 7 and later studied with Claire Hodgkins, former assistant to world-renowned violinist, Jascha Heifetz. She has played with the Riverside Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Guayaquil Symphony, and later became Concertmaster of the Loma Linda University Orchestra where she received her degrees in Business Administration and Music, graduating magna cum laude.

In 2008 she performed the Mozart Symphony Concertante with Keith Lawrence, violist. Her past musical accomplishments have included performances as featured soloist of the Bruch Violin Concerto and Mozart G Major Concerto. In 2005, she and her students debuted at Carnegie Hall and in 2006 at Kennedy Center. Margie has been teaching violin for more than 30 years and currently conducts the Ukiah Junior Academy Orchestra, K-6 Choirs and Ukiah Junior Academy Chorale. She has served as Choral Director and Minister of Music for

the Seventh-Day Adventist Church conducting the annual “Christmas Cantata—The Glory of Christmas,” now in its 21st season.

In addition to playing the violin, Margie is an accomplished vocalist. She was a featured soloist in “Broadway Under the Stars” in 2011. She has appeared as “Beauty” in the Ukiah Symphony’s production of Beauty and the Beast and “Broadway Under the Stars” with Jarrod McNaughton. She completed her third album, “In Your Holiness,” released in April of 2010 and has two albums, “Carry Me On” and “By My Side” with the Salcedo Sisters. She is featured regularly on Three Angels Broadcasting Television Network and performs Christian Contemporary concerts across the country.

Margie resides in Ukiah with her husband, Dr. Geoffrey Rice, Ophthalmologist. She has three musical daughters, Jessica (violinist), Patricia (violinist) and Elizabeth (cellist).

AARON AMES

Born in Burbank, CA, and raised in Ukiah, CA, Aaron Ames has been a pianist and musician since the age of seven, when he first began piano lessons under the tutelage of Mr. Michael Coughenour. Throughout his school years, he was an active member of wind ensemble and jazz bands in middle school and high school.

Upon graduation from Ukiah High, he was accepted to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, where he studied with Professor Frank Wiens and Dr. Rex Cooper. Each summer, he would return to Ukiah and contribute to the summer musical programs at Mendocino College.

While at UOP he became a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Theta Chi Fraternity, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance in 2008.

After receiving his degree, Mr. Ames applied and was accepted to the graduate music program at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. At Appalachian State, he studied under Dr. Rodney Reynerson and was given the opportunity to perform the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5.

He received his Master’s Degree in Music Performance in 2010, and was invited to join Pi Kappa Lambda, the musician’s academic honors society.

Since graduation from App State, Mr. Ames has discovered an affinity and admiration of piano accompaniment. He has had the good fortune to continue his association with the University as a staff accompanist and Opera Workshop accompanist, where he contributes to the musical growth and maturation of its students.

He has also been involved with several theatrical productions through the App State Department of Theater and Dance and in the greater community, most recently finishing a run as music director of “The Wiz” at the Ashe County Little Theater. In 2014, he joined the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory, NC as their Principal Pianist. In the near future, he plans to apply to a university one more time, and work towards a Doctorate of Collaborative Piano.

Mr. Ames is excited and honored to be invited back for a second time to perform as a soloist with the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra.
